Linear Equation
Linear Equation in one variable:
Define:
A linear equation in one variable is an equation which has a
maximum of one variable of order 1. It has the form ax + b = 0
where x is a variable. This equation has only one solution. A
few examples are:
● 3x = 1
● 22x - 1 = 0
● 4x + 9 = -11
Standard Form:
The standard form of a linear equation in one variable is
represented as:
❏ ax + b = 0
Where:
● ‘a’ and ‘b’ are real numbers ,and
● Both ‘a’ and ‘b’ are not equal to zero.
Thus, the formula of this equation is ax + b = 0.
Solving:
For solving an equation with only one variable, follow the steps
given below.
● Step 1: Using LCM, clear the fractions.
● Step 2: Simplify both sides of the equation.
● Step 3: Isolate the variable.
● Step 4: Verify your answers.
Example of a solution:
Consider -- 5x - 9 = 3x + 19
5x - 9 = 3x + 19
Step 1:
Transpose all the variables to one side of the equation.
Transpose -3x from the R.H.S to L.H.S The rule of
transposition, the operation on the operand gets reversed.
5x - 9 + 3x = 19
Step 2:
Simplify the equation.
8x - 9 = 19
Step 3:
Transpose all the constants.
8x = 9 + 19
8x = 28
Step 4: Divide with 8 on both the sides.
8x / 8 = 28 / 8
Hence, x = 28 / 8
Word Problems:
Problem Statement:
The length of the legs of an isosceles triangle is 4 meters
more than its base. If the perimeter is 44 meters, find the
lengths of the triangle.
Solution: Let’s assume the base measures ‘x’ meters. Hence,
each of the legs measure y = (x + 4) meters.
x + 2(x + 4) = 44
x + 2x + 8 = 44
3x = 44 - 8
3x = 36
x = 36 / 3
x = 12
legs = (x + 4)
legs = (12 + 4)
legs = 16
