PROBLEM 18 – 0526: Compute the maximum resisting moment for the given

section. The ultimate stress in concrete is 2500 psi. Steel

is
of structural grade with a working stress of 18000 psi.

Solution: From table I (see PREP) for Bar # 8 Area = 0.79 in2
∴ As = 4 × 0.79 = 3.16 in2
The effective depth, d = 24 – 2.5 = 21.5"
From ACI code (table V – see PREP)
for fs = 18000 psi
and fc' = 2500 psi n = 10
Applying the transformed area principle,
bx (x / 2) = nAs(d – x) where x is the distance between the top
fibre
and the neutral axis.
or {(12x2) / 2} = 10(3.14) (21.5 – x)
Solving, x = 8.34"
Moment arm,
jd = d – x/3
= 21.5 – 8.34/3
or jd = 18.72"
Moment on the concrete side
Mc = (1 / 2) fc bx jd
= (1/2) (1125) (12) (8.34) (18.72)
= 1053842 lb–in
= 87,820 lb–ft
Moment on the steel side,
Ms = Asfsjd
= 3.14 × 18000 × 18.72
= 1058054 lb–in
= 88,171 lb–ft
Ms > M c
Therefore, the maximum resisting moment is Mc = 87,820 lb–ft.
