Using QuickSet to Set Up Thermal

Model Calculations in the SEL-2414

Introduction
This quick-start guide explains how to set up thermal model calculations in the
SEL-2414 by using the Nameplate and Test Data Form available in the
ACSELERATOR QuickSet SEL-5030 Software.

The Nameplate and Test Data Form is visible within the QuickSet software only.
It simplifies setting up transformer thermal monitoring by deriving associated
thermal model device settings for sending to the SEL-2414.
See the instruction manuals for the SEL-2414 and SEL-5030 for comprehensive
details for transformer monitoring and the use of software, respectively. Down-
load these manuals at selinc.com.

Requirements
➤ PC with QuickSet software with SEL-2414 Z013 or higher settings
driver installed
➤ SEL-2414 with firmware version R400 or higher
➤ Connection from the PC to the SEL-2414 via serial, FTP, or Telnet
protocols
➤ Transformer test data (recommended for proper thermal model settings)

Using the Nameplate and Test Data Form

Figure 1 shows the location of the Nameplate and Test Data Form in the settings
group explorer, with the driver version and associated thermal model device set-
tings groups highlighted.

Step 1: Enable the Form

Select Y from the dropdown menu to enable the Nameplate and Test Data Form,
as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2 Enabling the Nameplate and Test Data Form

When you enable the Nameplate and Test Data Form, the software will derive all
the thermal model device settings by using settings in this form. Your changes to
settings in this form will change the derived device settings within the software
only. The device settings on the SEL-2414 will change only after you send these
modified settings to the device, as described in Step 5: Save File and Send Set-
tings to the Device.

Step 2: Enter the Nameplate Data

The following steps use example nameplate and test data from a two-winding,
three-phase transformer to illustrate the set up of IEC thermal model calculations.
Enter the nameplate data by performing these actions.
Step 1. Select transformer type and the thermal model.
Step 2. Enter the nominal voltages.
Step 3. Enter mechanical data (Make sure to indicate if the mechanical data
is in metric units).
Step 4. Select cooling stage types and rated winding temperature rises.
Step 5. Enter cooling stage MVA ratings.
Figure 3 shows the Nameplate and Test Data Form after you enter the example data.
Note the derived settings displayed in Figure 3 in the Transformer/Winding 1
section. These settings are grayed out to indicate default values. In these settings,
n represents the cooling stage number and varies from 1 through 3.
➤ Temperature rises (T1THORn, T1THGRn)
➤ Hot-Spot thermal time constants (T1THSn)
➤ Ratio losses (T1RATLn)
➤ Oil thermal time constants (T1OTRn)

NOTE: Some of the descriptions for

the entry fields contain capitalized
settings names (e.g., THMOD,
TMWNOM, etc.). This is to indicate the
corresponding device settings
available on the SEL-2414. The entry
fields without settings names in the
description are available in QuickSet
software only. A search for a settings
name will show results in the Device
Settings and Nameplate and Test Data
groups.

If transformer test data is not available, you can now save the settings file and go
to Step 5: Save File and Send Settings to the Device to send the derived device
settings into the SEL-2414. SEL highly recommends use of transformer test data.

Step 3: Edit the Derived Rise Settings, Time Constants, and Exponents
NOTE: You can edit the exponents in

Figure 4 shows the fields after you enter the test data from the test report of the
example transformer.

derived constants for comparing or
restoring settings later. Changing the
field highlighted in Figure 4 to Y after
editing the derived constants will
cause them to revert to default values.

If the transformer losses data are not available, you can now save the settings file
and go to Step 5: Save File and Send Settings to the Device to send the derived
device settings into the device.

Step 4: Enable Ratio Loss and Oil Time Constant Calculations

Enter transformer losses data, if available, after setting the Enable RATL calcu-
lation using losses data field to Y as shown in Figure 5. This will calculate the
ratio losses (T1RATLn).
Enable calculation of the oil thermal time constants as shown in Figure 5. These
constants are dependent on mechanical data, power ratings, and losses. Figure 5
shows the calculated ratio losses and the oil thermal time constants (T1OTRn) for
the example transformer.

See SEL application guide AG2017-23 at selinc.com for a listing of the formulae
for calculating the oil thermal time constants and for guidelines to calculate ratio
losses from partial losses data.

Step 5: Save File and Send Settings to the Device

Save the settings to a QuickSet file (*.rdb) at a location of your choice on the PC.
Figure 6 shows the settings saved as Nameplate ETHERM 1 in a local *.rdb
file.
Send the settings in this file into the device by selecting the highlighted icon or
by selecting Send from the File menu.

The thermal model settings on the SEL-2414 are now set up for commissioning.

Additional Operations
Read Settings From the Device
Read settings on a connected SEL-2414 into QuickSet to back up existing set-
tings or to compare the settings on the device to an original settings file.
To read a file on the SEL-2414, click on the highlighted icon as shown in
Figure 7, or select Read from the File menu.

Figure 7 Read Settings From the SEL-2414

The software reads settings in the device and displays them in a temporary set-
tings file. In this file, since the Nameplate and Test Data Form is not available on
the device, the form is displayed as not enabled, as shown in Figure 8. The device
settings in this file match the device settings in the SEL-2414.
SEL recommends that you save this file before comparing, editing, or merging
settings. Figure 8 shows the settings saved as Settings from Device in a local
*.rdb file.
If you enable the Nameplate and Test Data Form, the software will derive the
device settings using the default settings in the Nameplate and Test Data Form
and overwrite any existing device settings. However, these changes are limited to
QuickSet only unless they are sent to the device.

Settings Compare Report

The Nameplate and Test Data Form is visible in QuickSet only. The SEL-2414
firmware does not support this feature. The settings compare report (see
Figure 10) shows the Enable nameplate form setting as a difference when you
compare a settings file read from a device to the same settings file that was sent
from QuickSet. Absence of settings differences in the Device Settings group indi-
cate a successful settings transfer and the integrity of settings when compared
over time.
If a user changes device settings on the device, the compare report will list the
differences in the device settings group, as shown in Figure 11.
