Cultural Characteristics
In the perspective of anthropology, Leininger defines
culture as a learning, togetherness and transmission of
knowledge, which is the value of a habit, belief and norms
in certain cultural groups, where the ultimate goal of this

theory is a form of congruent care based on culture which

is interpreted as a form of action culturally adapted
nursing, more specifically adapted to the needs of patients
in order to improve, maintain their health and prosper.

Cultural competencies that nurses need to have

Cultural competence is a complex concept and culture-

sensitive cultivation has not yet been achieved.
Leininger (1991) was a pioneer in the discipline of
nursing with an emphasis on culture and concern for
people.
Cultural competence of nursing includes taking into
account different spiritual and religious needs, when

Transcultural Application in Nursing
Practice
Nursing as a profession has a solid knowledge base that can be developed and
applied in nursing practice. The development of nursing theory is divided into
4 stages of development, namely metha theory, grand theory, middle range
theory and practice theory. One of the theories expressed in middle range
theory is the theory of transcultural

nursing. This theory comes from the

discipline of anthropology and was developed in the context of nursing. This
theory describes the concept of nursing based on understanding the
differences in society's cultural values. Leininger believes that it is very
important to pay attention to cultural diversity and values in the application
of care to clients. When this is ignored by the caregiver, it leads to culture
shock.

Transcultural In order to implement
Application in transcultural nursing in the
Nursing Practice nursing process, a useful
set of guidelines is
required as a guide for the
nurse or client.
These guidelines are needed
so that caregivers can
properly perform their
duties and patients can make
a full recovery. These
guidelines include:
1. Always treat patients with respect. Caregivers need to be able to treat
patients from different backgrounds in different ways.
2. As nursing staff, we have to recognize, understand and familiarize
ourselves with the different customs and beliefs of certain cultures in the
nursing rooms we look after and manage.
3. We must skillfully integrate cultural symbols and practices into the
client's care plan. Of course, if all this is possible, because there are a
number of things that are not necessarily

compatible with different forms

of modern medicine.
4. A nurse must be able to break away from various cultural stereotypes,
which sometimes are not necessarily true.
5. Nurses need to be able to learn how clients perceive health, illness,
sadness, happiness and the healthcare system.
6. Nurses must be able to translate or find translators for patients who do not
have a good command of Indonesian.
7. The nurse should always have paper and pencil by the patient's bedside.

of cross-cultural nursing communication. This is

Transcultural required to achieve the effectiveness of sending and

receiving messages in communication. The effectiveness
Application in of receiving and sending this message is very important
in communication. This must be done in order for
Nursing Practice individuals to be able to interact normally with others.
The interaction and communication process can be
difficult at first, especially when the sender and receiver
do not share the same culture and language.
Transcultural communication is very important in the
nursing process. Therefore, caregivers need to
understand the belief system and how healthy beliefs
are from the client's perspective. Communication skills
in the transcultural process of nursing and the exchange
of concepts and principles will certainly be important
prerequisites for teaching nursing skills.
Conclusion
Transcultural nursing is one of the main areas in which nursing is focused on the
comparative and analysis of the world's different cultures and sub-cultures
appreciate caring behavior, nursing services, values, beliefs about health-illness,
as well as patterns of behavior aimed at developing a scientific body of
knowledge and humanistic to provide a place for nursing practice in a particular
culture and culture universal. Although each group has a pattern that can be
seen which helps distinguish it from other groups, most individuals also express
beliefs or traits that do not conform to group norms. Nurses have a lot time to
interact with clients, therefore nurses must realize its importance culture related
to communication.
