UNIT I
1 a) a. State the need for RTS/CTS exchange.
b. Comment on the statement, “802.11 can also use fragmentation to help
avoid interference”.
c. Explain with diagram RTS/CTS with fragmentation. (08 marks)
c) Explain with diagram the generic 802.11 MAC frame. Write the filter to
extract the three different types of frames, assuming the (08 marks)
“WLAN_802.11.pcap” file is given.
3 a) Explain the diagram the four different interframe spaces in 802.11 WLAN. (08 marks)
b) a. What is an SSID?
b. Discuss Independent and infrastructure Basic Service Set (BSS). (06 marks)
c) Illustrate with diagram WEP Data Processing operations for both encryption
and decryption. State the IP address to be provided, to configure the AP for (06 marks)
WEP enabling.
UNIT II
4 a) Compute the diffraction loss for the knife edge diffraction scenario assuming f (08 marks)
= 900MHz, d1=1km, d2=1km and h= -25m. Identify the Fresnel zone within
which the tip of the obstruction lies.

b) If the SNR of a wireless communication link is 20dB and the RF bandwidth is (06 marks)
30kHz, determine the maximum theoretical data rate that can be transmitted.
c) If a total of 60MHz of bandwidth is allocated to particular FDD cellular
telephone system which uses two 25 KHz simplex channels to provide full
duplex voice and control channels, compute the number of channels available
per cell if a system uses (06 marks)

5 a) Explain the ground reflection (Two ray) Model using the method of images. (06 marks)
b) A sinusoidal modulating signal m(t) = 20cos(2 π 4x103t), is applied to an FM

6 a) A cellular service provider decides to use TDMA scheme that can tolerate a (06 marks)
signal-to-interference ratio of 16dB in worst case. Find the optimum value of
cluster size N in case of path loss exponent n = 4.
b) Define Brewster angle. Calculate the Brewster angle for a wave impinging on (06 marks)
ground having a permittivity of 7.51.
c) Explain the cellular concept. Define the following terms:

e. Frequency reuse factor
UNIT III
7 a) Explain with diagram MIDlet lifecycle. Write a sample code for FirstMIDlet (08 marks)
which includes at least three state of a MIDlet.
8 a) Explain with diagram the five states in Player’s lifecycle. Write a sample (08 marks)
snippet that shows the transition through all five states.
b) Describe the functions of any six subclasses of Items UI element in MIDP. (06 marks)
