New English Translation

But the present heavens and the earth being kept in store by the same Word, are
being kept for fire until the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

KJV
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store,
reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Interlinear
οἱ (-) δὲ (But) νῦν (now) οὐρανοὶ (the heavens) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth), τῷ (by

Strong’s Concordance
krisis: a decision, judgment
Original Word: κρίσις, εως, ἡ
Transliteration: krisis
Phonetic Spelling: (kree'-sis)
Usage: judging, judgment, decision, sentence; generally: divine judgment; accusation.

Cognate: 2920 krísis (a feminine noun derived from 2919 /krínō, "to separate,
distinguish, judge") – judgment, emphasizing its qualitative aspect that can apply
either to a positive verdict (for righteousness) – or more commonly, a "negative"
verdict which condemns the nature of sin that brings it on. See 2919 (krinō).

Thayer's Greek Lexicon

1. a separating, sundering, separation; a trial, contest.
2. selection.
3. judgment; i. e. opinion or decision given concerning anything, especially
concerning justice and injustice, right and wrong.

Therefore, Judgment is not synonymous with condemnation, but with making an

assessment with discernment.

Mat 12:18 N-AFS

Behold My Servant, Whom I have chosen; My Beloved, in Whom My soul has found
delight. I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall declare judgment to the
Gentiles.
NAS: UPON HIM, AND HE SHALL PROCLAIM JUSTICE TO THE GENTILES.

Mat 12:20
A bruised reed shall He not break, and smoking flax shall He not quench, until He
brings forth the judgment unto victory.
NAS: HE LEADS JUSTICE TO VICTORY.

John 7:24
Judge not according to appearance but judge righteous judgment.

After a judge hears the testimony rendering of proper judgement is for the purpose
of restoring lawful order. Love pursues truth and the purpose of judging is to correct
the lawbreaker and justify the lawkeeper.

1Cor 5:1-13 (vs 3-5)

The judging of the fornicator in the congregation was to “deliver such a one to Satan
for the DESTRUCTION OF THE FLESH that the SPIRIT MAY BE SAVED IN THE DAY OF
THE LORD JESUS.

We need to learn God’s laws and how to discern truth to be able to “JUDGE” the
world…the angels…[and] things that pertain to this life. (1 Cor 6: 2,3)

Matthew 7:2
For by the standard you judge you will be judged, and the measure you use will be
the measure you receive. (ASV)
If we judge someone else harshly or unfairly, we will have to experience the same
kind of judgement.

Thus, when the saints are in heaven, they will have learned firsthand how they have
been judged with great love and mercy, so will be ready to reciprocate this same type
of judging to the world, the angels, and things of this life.

2 Cor 5:14-21
For the love of Christ constrains us, judging this, that if One died for all, then all died.

2 Peter 3:7 Page 3 of 8

15 and He died for all, that the living may live no more to themselves, but to the One
dying for them and having been raised. 18 And all things are from God, the One
having reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and having given to us the
ministry of reconciliation 19 as, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to
Himself, not charging their deviations (trespasses) to them, and putting the Word of
reconciliation in us. 20 Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were
making his plea through us. We plead with you on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to
God!”

Paul says “we” (the ones who have become believers) are ambassadors to “the
world” (the unbelievers) who have not yet been reconciled

RECONCILIATION: G2643
καταλλαγή
katallagē
kat-al-lag-ay'
From G2644; exchange (figuratively adjustment), that is, restoration to (the divine)
favor: - atonement, reconciliation (-ing).

TRESSPASSES: G3900
παράπτωμα
paraptōma
par-ap'-to-mah
From G3895; a side slip (lapse or deviation), that is, (unintentional) error or (wilful)
transgression: - fall, fault, offence, sin, trespass.

Strong's Concordance
apóleia: destruction, loss
Original Word: ἀπώλεια, ας, ἡ
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: apóleia
Phonetic Spelling: (ap-o'-li-a)
Definition: destruction, loss
Usage: destruction, ruin, loss, perishing; eternal ruin

Cognate: 684 apṓleia (from 622 /apóllymi, "cut off") – destruction, causing someone
(something) to be completely severed – cut off (entirely) from what could or should

have been. (Note the force of the prefix, apo.) See 622 (apollymi).
684 /apṓleia ("perdition") does not imply "annihilation" (see the meaning of the
root-verb, 622 /apóllymi, "cut off") but instead "loss of well-being" rather than
being (Vine's Expository Dictionary, 165; cf. Jn 11:50; Ac 5:37; 1 Cor 10:9-10; Jude 11).

Mat 9:17  (also Mark 2:22)

Nor do men put new wine into old wineskins; else the wineskins burst, and the wine
runs out, and the wineskins perish. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and
both are preserved together.

Mat 10:6
But rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Mat 10:42  (also Mark 9:41)

And whoever shall give to one of these little ones a cup of cold water to drink, only in
the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, He shall in no way lose his reward.

Mat 15:24
But He answered and said, I am not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of
Israel.

Mat 18:11
For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.  (comment: following this
is the parable of the lost sheep which the shepherd went to recover)

Mat 26: 7-9

A woman came to Him with an alabaster flask of ointment, very precious, and
poured it on His head as He sat down to eat. But when His disciples saw it, they
became indignant and said, “What reason is there for this waste? For this ointment
could have been sold for much, and the money given to the
poor.

Luke 15:4-6
What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave
the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find
it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he
has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.  And when he comes home, he calls

together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found
my sheep which was lost.

Luke 15:8-10
Or what woman having ten drachmas, if she loses one drachma, does she not light a
lamp and sweep the house, and seek carefully until she finds it? And when she has
found it, she calls her friends and her neighbors together, saying, Rejoice with me, for
I have found the drachma which I had lost. Likewise I say to you, there is joy before
the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

Luke 15:24, 32 (Prodigal on parable)

for this my son was dead and is alive again, he was lost and is found. And they began
to be merry. for this my son was dead and is alive again, he was lost and is found.
And they began to be merry.
(comment: we don’t want to have the self-righteousness of the elder son who did not
rejoice at his LOST brother’s repentance (vs 21) and restoration to good favor).
(comment: each parable of lost sheep, coin, son and the owner’s pledge to continue
searching until it is found shows how God views a loss of each one of his children
made in His image and does not want them to be lost forever. As parents know, they
would willingly do everything in their power to save their child, even to death)

John 6:12  (Jesus feeds 5,000)

And when they were filled, He said to His disciples, Gather up the fragments left over,
so that nothing is lost.

Comment on the above passages: In each case the things lost (gold, reward,
wineskins, coins, sheep, ointment, the prodigal son, and fragments) were not in a
state of death and were either still alive or had never lived. So when this word has
been translated as destroy it should not refer to depriving of life. The shepherd did
not stop searching until he found the lost sheep.

John 17:12
When I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. I protected those
whom You have given Me, and not one of them has perished (or lost) except the
son of perdition, in order that the Scriptures might be fulfilled

John 18:9
17 July 2023 Y.Newman
2 Peter 3:7 Page 6 of 8

He said this to fulfill the word he had spoken, “I have not lost a single one of those
whom you gave me.

Acts 8:20
But Peter said to him, May your silver perish with you, because you have thought
that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

2Cor 4:3
But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing (or
lost):
1 Timothy 6:9
For those who desire to become rich fall into temptation and a snare, and many
foolish and hurtful lusts, which cause men to sink into destruction and perdition.

(comment Matthew 19:24-26 “easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle
than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God… but with God all things are
possible.”)

Heb 10:39
But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to
the saving of the soul.

2Pet 2:1-4
Now there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false
teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying
the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.
Many will follow in their depravity, and because of them the way of truth will be
defamed. In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you with deceptive words.
The longstanding verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction does
not sleep. For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them deep
into hell, placing them in chains of darkness to be held for (κρίσεως) judgment;

Luke 19:10  (speaking of Zacchaeus)

For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Comment: Zacchaeus was lost (destroyed) and in this condition was in a state of
being ready to be found and saved. Romans 6:6 explains, “knowing this, that our old
man is crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be destroyed, that from

now on we should not serve sin.” So destruction is of the sinful nature is the first step
in the process of being saved. (see also 1 Cor 5:5, 1 Tim 1:20, 1 Tim 2:4, 1 Tim 4:10,
Psalm 90:3, )

Thoughts:
1 Joh 3:8 Jesus came to destroy the “WORKS OF THE DEVIL” which is the sin in our
lives, Humans are the works of God’s creation, not the devil’s work.

Isaiah 25:6-8
And in this mountain will Jehovah of hosts make unto all peoples a feast of fat
things… and he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering that covereth all
peoples, and the veil that is spread over all nations. He hath swallowed up death for
ever; and the Lord Jehovah will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the reproach
of his people will he take away from off all the earth: for Jehovah hath spoken it.

Isaiah 45:23-24
I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall
not return, that unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear, surely shall
say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength."

Romans 8:19-21
For the creation eagerly waits for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creation
was subjected to futility – not willingly but because of God who subjected it – in
hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the
glorious freedom of God’s children.

Questions:
1. Is Satan smarter or stronger than Jehovah such that God cannot win his sons back
from the curse of sin and death brought by Satan’s deceiving and lies?
2. Is Jesus powerless over mankind’s wills and inherited sinful nature even though
ALL POWER and AUTHORITY was given to Him and He was anointed to be our
SAVIOR?
1Ti 2:3-6  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who will
have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For God is
one, and there is one Mediator of God and of men, the Man Christ Jesus, who
gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
