10 COMMANDMENTS :
Exodus 20 : 2 – 17

"Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the
land which the LORD, your God, is giving you. (Exo 20:12 NAB)

3
He (JESUS) said to them in reply, "And why do you break the
commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
4
For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever
curses father or mother shall die.'
(Mat 15:3-4 NAB)

17
"Whoever curses his father or mother shall be put to death.
(Exo 21:17 NAB)

10 COMMANDMENTS :
Exodus 20 : 2 – 17
8
"Remember to keep holy the sabbath day.
9
Six days you may labor and do all your work,
10
but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be
done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave,
or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you.
11
In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in
them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the
sabbath day and made it holy.
(Exo 20:8-11 NAB)
WHY “SEVEN”? WHAT IS THE MEANING OF “SEVEN”?
Genesis 21: 25-34 – making a covenant

“What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set apart?”
(Gn 21:29)

-Abraham responds that they are a witness to the oath sworn and the
covenant made between them that day

- The name of the place became Beersheba

Beer = well + sheba = “seven” or “oath” of a covenant
‫ֶׁ֫ש בַע‬ (SHEBA)

1. FULL / COMPLETE
2. SEVEN (TIMES)
3. OATH / SWEAR => COVENANT
12
The LORD said to Moses,
13
"You must also tell the Israelites: Take care to keep my sabbaths, for that is to be the token
between you and me throughout the generations, to show that it is I, the LORD, who make you
holy.
(Exo 31:12-13 NAB)

2
Pharaoh answered, "Who is the LORD, that I should heed his plea to let Israel go? I do not know
the LORD; even if I did, I would not let Israel go."
3
They replied, "The God of the Hebrews has sent us word. Let us go a three days' journey in the
desert, that we may offer sacrifice to the LORD, our God; otherwise he will punish us with
pestilence or the sword."
4
The king of Egypt answered them, "What do you mean, Moses and Aaron, by taking the people
away from their work? Off to your labor!
5
Look how numerous the people of the land are already," continued Pharaoh, "and yet you would
give them rest from their labor!"
(Exo 5:2-5 NAB)
AVAD

1. TO WORK
2. TO SERVE / WORSHIP

Ex. 34:21 "Six days you shall work (serve, avad), but on the seventh day you
shall rest (shabbat - to cease or rest).
DOES GOD NEED REST?

16
Therefore, the Jews began to persecute Jesus because he did this on a sabbath.
17
But Jesus answered them, "My Father is at work until now, so I am at work."
(Joh 5:16-17 NAB)
12
The LORD said to Moses,
13
"You must also tell the Israelites: Take care to keep my sabbaths, for that is to be the token
between you and me throughout the generations, to show that it is I, the LORD, who make
you holy.
(Exo 31:12-13 NAB)
31
The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and the house of Judah.
32
It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers the day I took them by the hand to lead
them forth from the land of Egypt; for they broke my covenant and I had to show myself their
master, says the LORD.
33
But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the
LORD. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they
shall be my people.
34
No longer will they have need to teach their friends and kinsmen how to know the LORD. All,
from least to greatest, shall know me, says the LORD, for I will forgive their evildoing and
remember their sin no more.
(Jer 31:31-34 NAB)
After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other
Mary came to see the tomb. (Mat 28:1 NAB)

2
Very early when the sun had risen, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb.
(Mar 16:2 NAB)

But at daybreak on the first day of the week they took the spices they had prepared and went
to the tomb. (Luk 24:1 NAB)

On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it
was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
2
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told
them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him."
(Joh 20:1-2 NAB)
OLD COVENANT vs. NEW COVENANT
Are you unaware, brothers (for I am speaking to people who know the law), that the law has
jurisdiction over one as long as one lives?
2
Thus a married woman is bound by law to her living husband; but if her husband dies, she is
released from the law in respect to her husband.
3
Consequently, while her husband is alive she will be called an adulteress if she consorts with
another man. But if her husband dies she is free from that law, and she is not an adulteress if
she consorts with another man.
4
In the same way, my brothers, you also were put to death to the law through the body of
Christ, so that you might belong to another, to the one who was raised from the dead in order
that we might bear fruit for God.
(Rom 7:1-4 NAB)
30
"Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for
the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient
for putting a person to death. (Num 35:30 NAB)
