Lecture 1: Anxiety and PTSD
Anxiety Disorders
• Most frequent
diagnoses in general
population
• Co-morbid with
depression 50% of the
time
• Most individuals with
one anxiety disorder
also suffer from a
second disorder
• Women 2x more likely
than men to develop
anxiety disorders
Anxiety Disorders
• What makes it a disorder?
• Severe enough to lower
quality of life
• Chronic and frequent
enough to interfere with
functioning
• Out of proportion to the
dangers that they truly face
• Just because cannabis may
be helpful for
anxiety/stress/tension in
general, does not mean it is
helpful for an ANXIETY
DISORDER

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
• PTSD is a disorder that can develop after experiencing a shocking,
scary, or dangerous event.
• Immediate Onset
• Better response to treatment
• Better prognosis (i.e., less severe symptoms)
• Fewer associated symptoms or complications
• Symptoms are resolved within 6 months
• Delayed Onset
• Characterized by an onset of symptoms at least 6 months after the
stressor
• Condition more likely to become chronic
• Possible repressed memories
• Worse prognosis
Course of PTSD
• Symptoms may vary over time
• Duration of symptoms also varies
• Symptom reactivation may occur following:
• reminders of the trauma
• other life stressors
• new traumatic events
• Factors influencing likelihood of developing PTSD are:
• severity, duration, and proximity to traumatic event
• PTSD can develop in individuals without any predisposing
conditions, particularly if the stressor is extreme.
• The disorder may be especially severe or long lasting when
the stressor is of human design (torture, rape)
Summary
• Anxiety disorders are most frequent psychiatric
diagnoses
• Panic Disorder - sudden overwhelming anxiety and fear
with physical symptoms
