Flow chart for Emily’s dress

1. Cut out pattern pieces according to the grainline.

2. Gather the two front middle pieces together by sewing them together with a long basting
stitch and then gathering them with the basting stitch. Gather it to the length of the
ungathered lining pattern piece. Use twill tape to secure those gathers. Trim down any
excess bulk that you don’t want.
3. Do the exact same thing to the back middle pieces.
4. Then sew the front top pieces together at the center front line. Then gather between lines
on each side. The top front pieces will not be very gathered.
5. Sew the top front to the middle front. Start from the middle point and sew to the end
repeating on the other side.
6. Do the same to the back
7. Sew one side seam together and on the other side seam only sew and inch at the top of
the seam and an inch at the bottom of the seam. This will leave a gap for the zipper to go.
8. Serge a band the length of the sleeve and the sew it to the sleeve leaving a wide enough
width for your elastic to go through.
9. Then attach a safety pin the one end of the elastic and gather up your elastic by guiding it
through the casing with your safety pin.
10. Once you’ve inserted the elastic sew the sleeve together. Serge the raw edges.
11. Sew the two back skirt pieces together and then gather them. Also the skirt pieces and the
sleeves are the only pieces that will need seam finishes because this is a lined dress.
12. Do the same to the front piece.
13. The sew front skirt to back skirt at the side seams
14. Sew the skirt to the bodice
15. Create the lining wich is a repeat of steps 1-11 except that the middle pieces are not
gathered.
16. Attach the lining at the neckline. Serge the armhole to finish off. Slipstitch the lining
waist to the dress waist so all raw edges are enclosed within the lining.
17. To hem the sleeves and the skirt use a serger narrow rolled hem.
