1. Manufacturing-Production of goods in large quantities after processing from raw materials to more valuable
products.

2. Agglomeration economies-Many industries tend to come together to make use of the advantages offered by
the urban centres. Gradually, a large industrial agglomeration takes place.
3. Basic or key industries-These industries supply their products or raw materials to manufacture other goods,
e.g., iron and steel and copper smelting, aluminium smelting.
4. Consumer industries-These industries produce goods for direct use by consumers - s ugar, toothpas te, paper,
sewing machines, fans, e tc.
5. Small-scale industries-Industries in which the maximum investment allowed is rupees one crore.
6. Large scale industries-Industries in which investment is more than one crore on any industry.
7 . Public sector industries-It is an industry in which government agencies undertake economic activities and
control means of production and distribution, e.g., BHEL, SJ\IL.
8 . Private sector industries- These are owned and operated by individuals or a group of individuals, e.g., TISCO,
Bajaj Auto Ltd., Dabur Industries.
9 . Joint sector industries-They are jointly run by the state and individuals or a group of individuals, e.g., Oils India
Ltd. (OIL) is jointly owned by public and private sectors.
10. Cooperative sector industries-These are owned and operated by the producers or suppliers of raw materials,
workers or both. They pool in the resources and share the profits or losses proportionately such as the sugar
industry in Maharashtra, the coir industry in Kerala.
11. Heavy industries-Industries that use heavy raw material such as iron and steel.

12. Light industries-Industries that use light raw materials and produce light goods such as electrical industries.
13. Agro based industries-Industries that use agricultural raw materials, e.g., cotton, woollen, jute, silk textile,
rubber and sugar, tea, coffee, edible oil.
14. Mineral based industries-Industries that use minerals as their raw material, e.g., iron and steel, cement,
aluminium, machine tools, petrochemicals.
15. Thermal pollution-It refers to the pollution caused by discharge of hot water from factories into rivers and
ponds, which affects the aquatic life.
