Property markets are fascinating arenas with various factors at play particularly in emerging
countries like South Africa. The built environment in general is not only an essential stage for
society as a whole and the economy to play out, but also has the potential to actively
encourage social interaction and economic activity, and that is quite something. Your course
team and I look forward to guiding you through the course, and I can't wait to share my
passion for the property industry with you.
Let me tell you a bit about myself. I'm a property professional with seven years’ experience in
various sectors of the property industry in South Africa and the UK. I lived in London for four
years and relocated back to South Africa at the beginning of 2017. I completed a BSC property
studies degree at WITs, in Johannesburg, my home city. Most of my professional experience
has been as a market analyst, and I've developed a strong understanding of property markets
and what makes them tick. More specifically, but still rather broadly speaking, global markets,
cities and emerging economies interest me greatly. I recently started operating as an
independent consultant through my company Divercity Property Solutions, where I aim to
advise investors in South Africa and abroad interested in pursuing cross-border transactions.
My mission is to provide it nuanced market analysis and assist wherever possible with the
property needs of investors, occupiers and organisations. I am passionate about South Africa,
Africa, poverty alleviation and education. In my own capacity and through my role on the
executive committee of the South African Chamber of Commerce in London, I actively looked
to promote and facilitate business and charity initiatives between the UK and South Africa.
I am very excited to be joining you as you begin exploring the exciting field of property
development and investment. I'm also looking forward to the ongoing project components of
the course, which will allow you to identify a potential property project and investigate its
strengths and weaknesses as an investment. This project will allow you to apply the
knowledge you've gained in the course to a real-world example, and will hopefully equip you
with the valuable skills you can utilize in the future.
Let's finish off with running through the modules will be covering during the course. Module
one: An introduction to property development and investment. Module two: Identifying
investment opportunities. Module three: property law and the legal environment. Module
four: Property cash flow and investment. Module five: The role of property valuation. Module
six: Property financing. Module seven: The development process and, lastly, module eight:
Property management.
Best of luck with the course, and I look forward to meeting you on the online campus.
