The New Era of Global Socialization

Word Count: 1,070

Introduction

In the big world we are living in, connectivity around the globe is one of the

important aspects of further globalization efforts. Revolutionizing technology and

improving social media algorithms has marked significant milestones in our civilization's

progress. These advancements have brought profound changes, enabling platforms

such as TikTok and Facebook to provide ordinary individuals with unprecedented

opportunities for global exposure. Today, people from all walks of life can showcase

their cultures, talents, stories, and perspectives to a worldwide audience, transcending

geographical boundaries. These platforms have empowered individuals to be seen,

heard, and recognized on a global scale, creating a new paradigm of visibility and

connectivity in our interconnected world. With all that, social media and technology are

the new strategic resources aside from oil in this era in which this has ability to control

populations opinions and create instruments of mass destruction. For example, TikTok

is suspected that they are collecting data for the CCP, where the United States and

other countries felt threatened that they block the importation of technology, or

alternatively, China should sell the company on their side where American industry are

the one who’s going to control these, which led us into the technological cold war

(Brazalote, 2023; Bremmer, 2023; Kang & McCabe, 2023; Ogura & Toh, 2023). In

conclusion, whoever controls such technology, and its algorithm is the one who controls

the world in terms of Political influence, religious beliefs, and personal identity. By the

way, algorithms are controllable, in which can be used strategically about sending
3

information to people who consume it, where China is using this to control its people

and they are expanding this globally (Miracola, 2019).

Cultural integration/convergence

Social media has a wide impact on our culture, even though the Philippines has

been colonized by the United States for 48 years causing us to lose partly of our identity

(Arandilla, 2020). Globalizing in social media makes Filipinos much more fragile and

acceptable on consuming American and foreign influence in general cultures than ever

before, in which we act, dress, and think with foreign influence than the previous

decades, even like our Mapua curriculum, we are aligned with Arizona State University.

With all, I am positive about integration where knowledge from different backgrounds is

colliding with each other resulting in our perspective to become more broader, removing

the blurred blunders about discriminations such as racism, and making innovation much

easier to be engage with. To conclude, even though the Philippines had a bad flashback

about foreign interference in their daily lives, in the end, we have nothing to do but

embrace it rather than keep mourning on our past.

Cultural differentialism

Even though that the Philippines has been colonized by a lot of countries in the

past centuries, the country still has its cultural strength where for example, there are

exclusive habits such like Mano po that the other countries doesn’t comply to integrate

into their cultures (Brazalote, 2023). Either than that, cultures are not fixated on the past

where it doesn’t mean that we cannot make a new respected modern culture of our

own, as I observe on social media most Filipino are belittling the creation of other

Filipinos, in which they are too integrated with foreign ones, that if they compare the
4

advance to developing culture on a side by side they felt as they are inferior that they

mock their own culture, where I am guilty on this myself. Every time there are new

Filipino things that are being created with the help of social media to further the spread

of new trends that turn into our culture, from how we speak like slang, mannerism, or

even modernizing our old cultures, etc. With all, having a strong flexible culture is a

foundation of the Philippines as a signature that can influence others, which creates our

own identity that we are the Filipino people.

Cultural hybridity

From the aspect of hybridity, this is where how most Filipinos process on how

they absorb the integration of international influence into their own. One example of this

engagement is glocalization, where for example if an international company wants to

introduce to a foreign audience its different cultural products, there are going to have

two results on that if it will be a success or will be taboo on the taste, where the

glocalization strategy comes in by selling the same product but with local ingredients

that will be remarkable that culture (Molinsky, 2016; Brazalote, 2023). With that,

globalization is not always conducted by international companies on enforcing their

culture to others, for example here in the Philippines and with the help of social media

where we have choices to integrate with foreign news, but sometimes even if we

doesn’t want to be integrated, we have no choice since most Filipinos are the one who

are representing these integrations efforts, such as trends, Filipino modern movies are

just an adaptation from foreign countries and most 90’s songs that I thought that it was

Original Filipino music but it wasn’t. With all, I found myself and foreign people that we

have similar childhood by the help of the integration of glocalization hybridity to our own
5

respective cultures, where we experience similar products, songs, nostalgia, and more.

To sum up, glocalization affects the relations of people in different cultures to be open to

each other, resulting in a better economy, whereas Glocalization and Globalization and

previous aspects of this essay help our civilization to be better.

Conclusion

Thus, social media helps Filipinos to showcase their own skills and represent our

culture internationally and makes knowledge much more accessible and fast, but this

easy consumable content has also some downsides, that when it becomes too easy,

and the quantity of these becomes large we don’t know what is verified as fact-checked,

real news and the one mixed with propaganda. Also, Filipinos should embrace our

culture furthermore where we can showcase that we have a signature culture that they

could say that this is Filipino. I keep seeing on social media that most Filipinos are

embracing foreign cultural achievements, but when it comes to their own culture they

don’t, where I think it is false, since we have a rich culture around the Philippines, in

which the issues are the lack of exposure. Additionally, cultural hybridity especially with

the help of glocalization helps international cultures to become more open to one

another, which results in a broad globalization since they are open to each other.
