2.0 Applicable Materials: Coal / Imported Coal / Bituminous Coal / Steam Coal:
1. Select two sub lots / Places preferably front and back of the vehicle.
2. Take the sample approximately 5 kg from each sub lots.
3. Crush the sample using stone roller to less than 5 cm. Two opposite quarters shall be retained and
rest shall be rejected.
4. Retained sample shall be mixed together and take half quantity from the mixed sample.
5. Again crush the collected sample to less than 12.5 mm size using stone roller.
6. Take 2 kg from the sample and send it to Moisture analysis with Air drying method.
7. Air dried coal sample will again take it in milling device / Stone roller for further crushing /
pulverizing.
8. Separate the sample of 0.50 kg using coning and quartering method.
9. Sieve the sample in 212 micron Sieve.
10. Collect the sample of 0.50 kg in sealed zip lock cover.
4.1 Non-corrodible trays approximately 1000 cms in area and large enough to hold the entire sample.
4.2 Ventilated drying oven - in which a constant and uniform temperature of 108 ± 2°C can be
maintained.
4.3 Weighing vessel - shallow, approximately 40 cm 2 in area, made of silica, glass or stainless steel,
with ground edges and fitted with ground cover.
5.0 Procedure
1. Dry the container in air and transfer to the tray any coal that was left behind adhering to the
sides.
2. Weigh the dry empty container.
3. Record mass of the sample taken for the test.
4. Transfer the sample from the container to the weighed metal tray and spread the material
evenly on the tray.
5. Allow the material in the tray to air-dry at atmospheric temperature in a well-ventilated place
free from dust.
6. Take the drying to be complete when the change in mass during an hour is less than 0·1
percent of the sample. Record this mass.
1. Heat the empty vessel at 108 ± 2°C and weigh after cooling for 20 minutes.
2. Crush the air-dried material to pass 3 mm IS sieve.
3. Spread uniformly in the weighing vessel (Petri dish) about 10 g of the crushed material and weigh.
4. Heat the uncovered vessel in the drying oven at a temperature of 108 ± 2°C until there is no
further Loss in mass.
5. This normally takes 1.5 to 3 hours. Replace the cover, cool in a desiccator for 20 minutes and weigh.
Air-drying - Express the loss in mass during air-drying as a percentage of the original mass of the material
Represent this as (Y).
Oven-drying - Express the loss in mass on oven-drying the sample, as a percentage of the total mass of
sample placed in the oven
Total Moisture will be sum of Air drying moisture % and Oven drying moisture %.
IS: 1350(Part 1) 1984 - Indian Standard - METHODS OF TEST FOR COAL AND COKE - PART 1 PROXIMATE
ANALYSIS - (Second Revision)
Note:
For the determination of moisture in coke, the minimum free-space oven method with a temperature
of 200 ± 5°C and a heating period of 4 hours is employed. If MFS Oven not available, then follow the
same method used for Coal.
