INTRODUCTION
Tropical cyclones are formidable and organized storm systems that originate over warm ocean waters.
These storms are characterized by their low-pressure centers, powerful winds, and heavy precipitation.
They can cause significant damage to an area they occur in.
The categorization of tropical cyclones varies depending on their sustained wind speeds, with scales
such as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale or the Typhoon Warning System. The naming of tropical
cyclones differs across different ocean basins and is typically handled by meteorological organizations.
Mozambique experienced a cyclone called cyclone Freddy in February this year, so how did the cyclone
impact the country?
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Mozambique
Mozambique is a country on the Southern part of Africa with a long Indian Ocean coastline. It has a
population of more than 32 million people and it is 801537 Kilometers squared large with a lot of tourist
attractions like Tofo beach and offshore marine parks.
Cyclone freddy
Tropical Cyclone Freddy, a severe storm originating in the Indian Ocean, impacted Southern Africa on
multiple occasions. During its initial landfall, Freddy achieved Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson
scale and went on to set a record as the longest-lasting cyclone ever recorded worldwide. On February
24, 2023, it first struck the southern part of Mozambique, leaving 1.5 million people struggling with its
aftermath. On March 11, Freddy returned, affecting the northern regions of Mozambique before moving
into southern Malawi.
Freddy caused great devastation upon the coastal communities of Mozambique and Malawi, resulting in
the destruction of residences, structures, and vital infrastructure. Additionally, the tropical cyclone
caused widespread flooding and very heavy rainfalls in Mozambique.

Observation
Back in February I was watching e.tv news and I saw a lot of people forced out of their homes by Cyclone
Freddy in Mozambique because their homes were not made to handle the cyclone. The roads were
flooded and had some trees which fell on them due to the storm. The area was also very windy and the
news reported that 28 people had died during the storm that day.
ANALYSIS
The cyclone affected about 1.1 million individuals, damaging infrastructure extensively, the destruction
of 391,000 hectares of cropland, and the loss of both livelihoods and 53 lives. It was reported that
approximately 57,000 people out of the initial 184,000 displaced individuals were still residing in 33
accommodation sites across Inhambane, Niassa, Sofala, Tete, and Zambezia provinces. Women and
children were the most affected, accounting for 33% and 44% of the respective groups. Those affected
are in urgent need of essential resources such as food, shelter, water, and healthcare. This has meant
that Mozambique ‘s economy has declined dramatically leading them to need assistance from
Humanitarian aid from multiple organizations.
Freddy caused severe damage on coastal communities of Mozambique and Malawi, including the
devastation of residences, structures, and infrastructure. The tropical storm also caused extensive
flooding, which has the potential to cause enduring consequences for the impacted communities.
Mozambique has experienced heavy rainfalls due to cyclone Freddy with over 400 mm of rain hitting the
country over those days. This has caused rivers to rise and dams also broke which caused flooding. A
major part of Mozambique was flooded which resulted in soil erosion, siltation, bed erosion and great
damage to vegetation.
