What’s In

In the previous lesson, you learned about preparing and and cleaning
feeders and waterers regularly.

The types of feeds and feeding guide will help to produce the high quality of
meat and eggs.

A. Tell whether the statement is TRUE or FALSE.

1. High feed consumption in broiler correlate with growth rate. ___________

2. Feeding guide is essential for health and efficient broiler production. _____

3. Feeds must be given to birds according to the nutrient needed. ________

4. Poultry need feeds for growth and production.___________

5. Give the desired feeds according to the age of chicken. ____________

13
6. Broiler must be fed with crumble during the entire growing
period.____________

7. Pellets vary in size.__________

8. Follow the feeding guide to avoid stunted growth._____________

9. Feeding birds must done regularly. ___________

10. Feeds must be available at all times.____________

What’s New

What is feeding bird?

.Feeding birds at all times is important. It enable to give the proper

nutrients needed by the birds. Different types of feeds was formulated due to the
needs of birds. High quality, commercially mixed feeds for chicks, growing stocks
and layers are now available in the market. Because of this, home mixing ration for
poultry is not being done because it is impractical and time consuming.

What Is It

PRINCIPLES OF FEEDINGS

The of feeding is to maintain life. It supplies nutrients for maintenance, growth,

fattening and egg production.

THREE TYPES OF FEEDS COMMONLY OFFERED TO BROILER CHICKEN:

1. Prestarter or chick booster

- Given to chicks from day old- to 2 weeks.

2. Broiler starter
- Given to chicks from 2 weeks old to 4 weeks old.

3. Broiler-finisher
- Given to chicks from 4 weeks old until desired market weight and age
are achieved.
14
THREE FORMS OF BROILER FEEDS:

1. Mash- a mixture of feed ingredients for livestock.

2. Pellets- are compressed through pelleting machine. Pellets vary in size.
3. Crumbles- a form of feeds which made of crushed pellets.

Poultry egg producer simply select the brand of feeds they need and buy the right
kind of feeds for their stocks. This system processing feeds simplifies feeding
management practices. The different kinds of commercial mixed feeds that are sold
in the market are given to laying stocks at different stages of growth. The following is
a simple feeding guide depending on the age of the flock.

Table 1. Simple Feeding Guide

AGE OF FLOCK KINDS OF FEEDS
Day old to 6weeks Chick starter mash with 20 to 21% protein
7 to 14 weeks Grower ration with 16% protein
15 to 20 weeks Pullet developer with 14% protein
When pullets start laying Laying mash with 16 to 18%

SYSTEM OF FEEDING

All mash ad libitum system of feeding is recommended for layers. To avoid

overfeeding, about 110 grams of laying mash should be given to layers per day or 11
kg. per birds per day. A total of three to four feedings a day is a good practice to
stimulate better consumption.

Other feeding system are the following:

 Self feeding with dry mash mixture in self feeders using commercial feeds.
 Self feeding with dry mash mixture and grain in different troughs.
 Self feeding of dry mash mixture for ground corn for scratch mixed with the
mash.
 For chickens raised in confinement, chopped young green forage may be
given.
 For chicken allowed on pasture, chopped young green forage maybe fed
during the dry season.
 During hot days, dry mash maybe moistened to encourage more feed intake.

Table 2.Feed Waste Ratio

FULL FEEDER 30% Likely to be wasted
2/3 Full 10% wasted
½ FULL 3% wasted

What’s New

What supplement feeding is all about?

One of the important purposes of supplying nutrients in broilers and

layers meat and eggs production. Nutrients furnishing nourishment to supplement
something in order to make more productive.

Try this activity below if you know how to identify its sources. Write PP if
it is source of plant protein and AP it is source of animal protein. Write your answer
on a separate paper.

1. Soy bean meal ________

2. Fish meal ________
3. Mongo beans ________
4. Shrimp meal ________
5. Peanut meal ________

What Is It
The Essential Nutrients
Carbohydrates. It is a kind of nutrient that constitute a large portion of layer
feeds. It furnishes heat and energy. The following feeds contain carbohydrates:
 Cereals- corn, rice, sorghum
 Root crops- cassava, camote, gabi
Protein. This kind of nutrients are needed for muscle-building and egg
production. Thus, it is composed of many amino acids. Protein must composed of
14%-15% of the total ration. Proteins of animals are of best quality because it
contains all essential amino acids.
Sources of Plant Protein
-Copra meal -Ipil-ipil leaf meal
-Mongo beans -Peanut meal
-Soybean meal -Sun-flower meal
Sources of Animal Protein
-Blood meal -Fish meal
-Meat scraps - Shrimp meal
Vitamins. It is needed for proper growth, egg production, hatchability of
eggs, livability of chicks, and maintenance of health. Vitamins that are commonly
deficient in layers are Vitamins A,D, and G.

23
Vitamin A. It is essential for normal working of the mucous membranes
of the body, builds up the resistance to infections, needed
in egg production. Hens which have access to fresh, green
forage usually does not suffer from vitamin A deficiency.

SOURCES:
Natural sources are fresh green forage either in the form
of pasture or soilage(green grasses cut into small pieces
and given to the birds), fish oil, ipil-ipil leaves and yellow
corn.

Vitamin D. It provide the hens to help them utilize the calcium and
phosphorus in the feed to make their bones strong. When
Vitamin D is not sufficient, the eggs laid by the hens usually
have thin and weak egg-shells: and they may hatch weak
chicks. Exposing to direct sunlight for 15 to 30 minutes
everyday will enable the fowl to manufacture Vitamin D that
it needs.

SOURCES:
Natural sources are sunshine and cod liver oil.
Vitamin G. It supplies the hens with the right amount of Vitamin G pass
some of this vitamin to the eggs they lay. The eggs are
are hatched properly and the chicks will be healthy.

SOURCES:
Natural sources of vitamins are dried milk, fish meal, meat
scraps, ipil-ipil leaf meal, and green forage.

Minerals. The hen has only 2 2 ounces of mineral in her body. Mineral must
must therefore be added to the hen’s ration to meet the mineral needs.

Minerals needed are:

1. Calcium.
Importance- need for egg shell formation and for bones of the chicks that
will hatch from the eggs.
Sources-oyster shell, sea shells, limestone and coral.
2. Phosphorus
Importance- needed for the building of the bones of the hen and the
chicks
Sources- fish meal, meat scraps, bone meal
3.Salt(common table salt)
Importance- contains sodium chloride and trace minerals essential for
normal health of hens
4.Grit
Importance- All chickens need grit to help grind the feed in their gizzard
Source- bits of gravel and coarse sand.

24
5.Water
Importance- Essential to carry on all the functions of the body. A fresh
egg contain about 85% water and yolk about 15 percent.
Source- artesian or deep well, natural spring and city or town systems.
6.Antibiotics
Importance:
-increase egg production -increase feed utilization
-increase egg size -increase hatchability
-improve livability of chicks -insure diseases prevention and control

Layers are fed for the purpose of supplying nutrients needed to keep them fit
for the production.

What’s More
Direction. Answer the following questions: Write your answer in separate paper.
