northern entrance of our nation’s first national park, Yellowstone.
@ According to the Department of Interior, the goal of the National Park Service
is, and has always been, to keep our wild places protected and unimpaired for
future generations. To that end, more than 400 areas and 84 million acres span-

protect America’s greatest natural treasures. With 61 of those wilderness areas
toting National Park designation, it can be tricky trying to pick which park to

So, to help you determine which parks should be higher on your bucket list,
we ranked each park based on their overall accessibility, facilities and accom-

which we measured by photo ops and stunning scenery.
Keep in mind, it’s almost impossible to say that one is better than the next —
there’s truly something special about each one of our national parks.

Although the park doesn’t lack awe-inspiring scenery, sweltering Texas heat
typically deters the park’s 440,000 annual visitors from visiting during peak
summer months. Instead, hikers and campers prefer the mild temperatures of
spring and fall or head to higher elevations in the Chisos Mountains, where the
temps are 20+ degrees cooler.
Over 150 miles of hiking trails are available to explore the peaks of the Chisos
Mountains or Santa Elena Canyon, but you can also take a short stroll and soak
in therapeutic hot springs after a long day of sightseeing. Not up for hiking?
No problem – take a scenic drive along 100 miles of paved road that stretches
through the park, spend time at the Fossil Discovery Exhibit, or merely sit out
under the stars and marvel at the beauty of a clear night sky.
It can take over 3 hours to drive to Big Bend if you are flying into El Paso or
Midland, so make sure you plan accordingly and have a rental car ready to go
when you land.

Probably not. But this incredibly adorable shot

thing that any parent knows by looking at this

comfortable - there’s no other way that a little

Danny 'Hooch' Matador

Ventriloquist's dummies sure are creepy -- just ask Don Knotts. (Ok, you
can't actually ask him, as he died in 2006.) As a teenager in West Virginia,
Knotts dreamed of a career in show business, and developed a ventriloquist
act with a wooden sidekick he named Danny "Hooch" Matador. Knotts went
to New York City after high school to try his luck as a comedian, with little
success, then returned home to attend West Virginia University in Morgan-
town.
After his freshman year, Knotts joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and shipped
off to serve in the Pacific. This photo was snapped either during or just before
his first year in the military. Knotts served from 1943 to 1946, earning numer-
ous honors, and toured the Pacific as part of a comedy show called "Stars &
Gripes." He used his ventriloquist's dummy, Danny, in the show -- for awhile.
By then, he had grown to despise Danny. Knotts wanted to take part in comedy
sketches, but the show's directors felt he should stick with the ventriloquist act.
One day, while on a ship, Knotts decided he'd had enough of playing straight
man to a hunk of wood, and threw Danny overboard. He told his Stars & Gripes

bosses he had lost the dummy.

Knotts also confessed to a friend that he swore he could hear the drowning

FAMOUS MURDERS
THAT REMAIN
UNSOLVED
By Thomm Quackenbush
Despite what television would have you believe, not every mur-
der is solved in under an hour. No matter how much effort police
put into the cases at the time and amateur sleuths do afterward,
some murders will never be solved.
That's not to say that all unsolved murders are created equal. For
some, almost everything about the case is unknown: the culprit,
the victim's identity, the method, the motive. On occasion, the best
the police can tell the public is that someone was definitely killed,
but anything after that is nebulous. With other cases, everyone
knows who did it, but they managed to get acquitted or gave the
police an alibi. In still others, the only reason that witnesses aren't
pointing fingers at the culprit is that these fingers will be immedi-
ately cut off — along with their heads.
However, for what little good it did for the victims, sometimes
being unable to solve a murder drives those left behind to improve
the world so that no one else has to suffer the same fate.

EARTH'S VERY HOT WEEK

Atlantic and most of the Pacific.
Other hot spots included Jingxing, China, which checked in almost 110 degrees
Fahrenheit and Adrar, Algeria, where the temperature never got below 103.3 de-
grees, even at night when it is supposed to cool.

How hot was it?

About 63 degrees on average across the globe. That's the unofficial record set
Thursday and it's nearly 2 degrees warmer than the average temperature.
If that doesn't sound very hot, you're right. But keep in mind that number averages
temperatures from all over the Earth. And when graphed against decades of data, it
soars above the relatively predictable slope of temperatures.

Heat coming for Southwest US

The Local News, July 15, 2023 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

Even though heat was mostly in check this week in the U.S., the summer is still
expected to be unusually hot in most of the nation.
The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center in mid-June said al-
most the whole country was trending toward above average temperatures.
In the short-term, millions of people in the Southwest were alerted to upcoming
heat danger on Friday. This included normally broiling Phoenix, Arizona, where
next week's heat wave could be record-breaking, potentially rivaling "some of the
worst heat waves this area has ever seen," the National Weather Service said.
Temperatures are forecast to approach 118 degrees and could be even a few de-
grees hotter. "From next Tuesday through the rest of the week, temperatures across
the region may be some of the hottest we have ever seen," the weather service said.
The all-time record high temperature in Phoenix is 122 degrees.
A Sikh soldier of the British Indian Army fits
Climate and weather aren't the same a gas mask to a mule (circa 1939 – 1945).
Regardless of how hot it seemed in your neighborhood this week, that weather
tells you very little about the overall state of the climate.
Weather is what you see outside the window. Climate is what occurs in an area
over years or decades. Climate change is the difference seen in long-term trends in
air, water and ocean temperatures and longer-term weather patterns.
Global records like the ones recorded this week are exactly what climate scientists IMAGINE A
would expect in a warming world, but the real proof of climate change has been
thoroughly documented by scientists and government agencies for years.

I’m Not There (2007)
I’m Not There takes an interesting approach to portray superstar Bob Dylan. Rather than
having one actor play him throughout, they use different stars for different stages of his life.
Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, and Marcus Carl Franklin all
come together to play “the many lives of Bob Dylan.” Bob Dylan, in case you didn't know,
was one of the most influential songwriters in modern music history.

MAKIN WAVES SALON The title of the 2007 film was pulled from Dylan’s 1967 Basement Tape recording of the
same name. Blanchett won a Golden Globe for her performance and was nominated for sev-
eral others, though the film only ultimately saw about $20 million in revenue at the box of-
fice.

Jobs (2013)
Steve Jobs was one of the wealthiest men in the world before his death in 2011. In this
film, the Apple co-founder and CEO was portrayed by Ashton Kutcher. It follows Jobs on
his rise to success and shows how it all affected his personal life. Jobs is widely known as
a pioneer of the PC or personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s. As most of us
know, the leaders of this game were him and Bill Gates.
Although the Business Insider described the film’s $6.7 million openings as a flop, and it
only holds a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, many critics spoke very highly of it. And,
even those who weren’t big fans of the film itself gave Kutcher kudos for his performance.

Milk (2008)
Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician in California’s history. Milk didn’t get in-
volved in politics, nor reveal his orientation until he was 40-years old. Actor Sean Penn dove
into the portrayal of Milk and his quest to transform his area into a haven for LGBT folks
during the 70s. The politician initially opened a camera shop in the Castro District before
going into politics. In 1977 he became the nation's first openly gay in public office.
In the 2008 film, he’s played by Sean Penn, who the Academy Award for Best Actor for
