1. Overview

1.1 The RDS Precision Farming System

The RDS Pro-Series 8000 is a fully DGPS compatible, multi-function cab computer for yield monitoring, yield
mapping, soil mapping, and variable-rate control applications.
It is the central component of R DS Precision Farming hardware (fig. 1) and i s desi gned to operate between
combine, qua d bike (for soil sampling), spreader, sprayer and drill .
Figure 1 The Pro-Series 8000 is the central componen t of RDS Precision Farming hardware

Installation kits are available for a wide range of a pplications. They allow the the PS 8000 head unit to be
simply disconnected from one vehicle and re-connected to the next.
The PS 8000 functions are then re-configured by uploading control software from the appropriate 'Data
Module ' connected to the upper serial port on the back of the instrument. The DGPS receiver connects to the
lower serial port.
The PS 8000 in standard configuration functions as a yield monitor without yield mapping capability.
Instructions on re-configuration and use of the PS 8000 to enable Precision Farming (PF) functions are
included in the "Data Logging and Transfer" manual supplied with your data module.

1.2.1 Menu keys

All instrument functions are accessed by nine menu keys adjacent to the LCD display.
Figure 2

SCREEN-10.TIF

The four menu keys to the ri ght of the screen (figure 2) access the primary screen page s (those viewed during
normal operation). There are three primary screens MAIN, INFO and LOG for normal operating functions, and
a SETUP screen for calibration functions and settings specific to particular crops.

1.2.2 Data Entry

Alpha-numeric values are e ntered via the ri ght-hand keypad. You must press the key from 2 to 5 times to
select the required letter. (Some keys have a dditional special characters not shown on the key legend) .
The key will either toggle between lower and upper case characters or when preceeding a numerical
entry, will set a MINUS value .
The key will toggle between 0 and a SPACE.
The key will BACKSPACE the screen cur sor i f you need to re-enter a character.
The key is the RETUR N key and i s normally pressed to confirm the data entry into memory.

1.2.3 Units
Information can be di splayed in metric, UK Imperial or US units by selecting the de sired option via the SETUP
menu.

Function Units
Metric UK Imperial US Imperial

1.3 "Harvest Type" (Cereals or root Crops)

The Ceres 8000 MAIN and INFO screens can be confi gured to suit either cereals or r oot/vegetable crop
harvesting. If you are harvesting root/vegetable crops, then select this option i n the "Factory" menu on the
SETUP screen. The di fferences for root crops are:-
You can define your own weight unit (e .g. sacks, crates or whatever). The factory default de scription i s "User
Defined". To programme your units, go to the "Units" menu and e dit the top li ne usi ng the al pha-numeric
keypad. Area and speed units are the same (mph / kph and acres / hectares). With cereal crops the crop
density (hectolitre weight) is programmed on the MAIN screen using the up/down arrow keys. With root crops,
if the user- defined units are other than kilograms, crop density (kg/user-define d unit) must be programmed on
the "Crop Select" screen.
You can account for the amount of soil stuck to the crop when it is being measured in order to get a more
accurate "harvest" weight. On the INFO screen, "MOISTURE" is re placed by "SOIL TARE". Estimate the weight
percentage of soil on the crop and set this fi gure manually as necessary (a s you woul d for har vest moisture
content in cereals). Yield, Work Rate and Totals are then based on the "clean" weight. The default soil tare is
programmed at 16% for all crops.
You can also account for any additiona l loss in crop weight i .e. as a result of additional processing i nto the
marketable commodity (e.g. drying, topping / tailing) , giving you a net weight total. Thi s is similar to the
"Storage (DRY) weight" for cereals. The "WET/DR Y" key is re placed by "GROSS/NET" for the Part/Full totals on
the INFO screen. To ena ble the NET weight function, you must set the "Net Wei ght Factor" on the " Crop Select"
screen. The default setting is 1.000 i .e. the net weight equals the gr oss (harve sted) weight. For example, if you
estimate the net weight will be 90% of the har vested weight, then the net weight factor should be programmed
to 0.9.
Crop Calibration: The default crop calibration factors are the same a s for cereals (20.00) . It i s recommended
that you start with these figures. Crop calibration i s done the same as for cereals using the NUDGE screen
(4.4). Perform crop calibration with the soil tare set to zero.
1. Harvest some crop and note the weight di splayed on the instrument.
2. Measure the crop weight on the weighbridge. Add to this weight a s be st you can measure or estimate, the
weight of any soil off the crop since it passe d over the weighing point on the harvester.
3. On the NUDGE screen, enter the Cere s (LOAD) weight on the top line, and the weighbridge (TR UE) weight on
the second line . Press E NTER and the cal. factor is automatically re-calculated.
Note that if the loa d weight subse quently differ s from the true weight, this can occur because the soil tare
figure i s incorrect.

1.8 Select Control Software

If your Pro-Series head unit is fitted with a Secondary Software Module, then it can be switched over to another
implement to perform a different task. You can simply change the head unit function from a Yield Monitor to,
for example , Soil Sampling and Route loggi ng.
Select the software from the SETUP menu ("4. Select Instrument")

1.9 Getting the best results

Ceres yield monitors are well-proven and capable of very good overall accuracy. However to achieve the be st
possible accuracy the system must be properly set up and maintained. The main poi nts to obser ve are:-
- If harve sting particularly oily crops, check that the grain sensor lenses and the moisture sensor fin stay
reasonably clean. .
- Cross-check moisture readings and grain density settings by measuring re ference samples of the crop at
the start. .
- Check and if require d tare (zero) the yield reading with the harve ster running empty.
- The clean grain elevator chain shoul d be in good condition and correctly tensioned.
Remember! a few minutes spent chec king the system be fore starting to harvest is ti me well spen t.

2.2 Harvest checklist

Because of natural variation in crop conditions, it is recommended to check moisture content and crop density
at regular intervals during the daily operating routine. If a moi sture sensor i s fitted and you are harve sting oily
or green crops, watch out for unusual moi sture readings, which may indicate that the moisture sensor needs
cleaning.

2.3 Set Tare

The tare shoul d be checked AT LEAST ONCE PER DAY - more often when har vesting dirty or oily crops.
Significant errors can occur as a result of a buil d up of crop resi dues or a worn / badly adjusted elevator chain.
1. Position the combine on level ground.
2. Run the combine at normal threshing spee d with the clean grain elevator empty.
3. Select the 'Set Tare'' screen.

FIG-05 6.GIF FIG-06 3.GIF

PS-5.TIF

4. The tare readout is expre sse d as '% darkness' - the proportion of time that the sensor beam i s br oken by the
elevator paddle s and any material on them. If the 'C urrent Tare' reading i s different from the 'Current % MS'
reading, then press the 'SET NOW' key to perform a tare. The instrument will then average the tare value . The
'Current Tare' and 'Current % MS' readings shoul d now be equal.

2.4.1 Selecting a pre-programmed crop

The Pro-Series 8000 ha s 3 pre-programmed settings ( see figure 11) for each of 8 different crops:-
Wheat
Barley
Oats
Oilseed Rape (Rapesee d Canola)
Linseed
Beans
Peas
Maize ( Corn)
Select the crop using the left / ri ght arrow buttons (figure 11). The selected crop i s displayed when you return
to the MAIN screen page.
The pre-programmed crop settings will normally may need to be adjusted according to your particular crop
conditions, and if the weighbridge (scale house) readouts / reference moi sture sensor measurements are
significantly different from the i nstrument readouts.
Crop settings cannot be altered while l ogging data. The job must be ended and the changes made be fore a
new job i s started.

2.4.2 User-defined crop type

You can programme a further 2 crop types your self. Select 'Crop Name 1' or 'Crop Name 2 ' from the li st.
Press the button to position the screen cursor under the fir st letter and then enter the crop name using
the alpha-numeric keypad.
The other settings are then made in the same way as for the pre-pr ogrammed crop types. Refer to sections
2.4.3, 2.4.4 or 2.4.5 if it is necessary to change any of the crop settings.

2.4.3 Adjusting the Storage Moisture Content

The Storage Moisture Content (specific to each crop) enables the Ceres to di splay the corre sponding dry
yield. It i s set re gardless i f a moi sture sensor is i nstalled.
NOTE: In the event of the har vest moisture content becoming less than the programmed storage moi sture content,
the harvest weight will stay equal to the dry weight.
Position the screen cur sor using the up / down buttons. Key-in a new value as necessary using the numeric
keypad and pre ss to confirm the entry.

2.4.4 Crop Calibration Factor

The default calibration factor (specific to each crop) is wherever possible, derive d fr om barn test data for your
make and model of combine . Due to normal variation within particular crops, different varieties of crops and
operating characteristics of individual combine s, the Crop Cali bration Factor normally needs to be adj usted
slightly.

12
PS8000 - CERES YIELD MONITOR

When to adjust a Crop Calibration Factor ?

Adjustment may be neede d if the Cere s gi ves consi stent discrepancies between it's yield readings and the
weighbridge ( scalehouse) readings.
The new factor is calculated as:- Existing factor x True weight
Ceres weight rea ding
Position the screen cur sor using the up / down buttons. Key-in a new value as necessary using the numeric
keypad and pre ss to confirm the entry *.
All previously accumulated summary data stored in memory will be retrospectively corrected if a new Crop
Calibration Factor is entered. Before setting a new factor it is wise to note down the exi sting factor for future
reference. A chart i s pr ovide d at the back of this manual for this purpose.
NOTE: Inaccurate settings for the Tare, Crop Density or Moisture Content will also affect the accuracy of grain yield
measurement. These settings are more likely to be re sponsible for di screpancies and should be checked first.
* You can also adju st the crop cali bration factor s via the "CAL NUDGE" screen ( fig. 12b) . First select the
appropriate crop ( ) then from the SETUP screen, press .

Figure 12a Figure 12b

SCRN-405.PCX SCRN-406.PCX

2.4.5 Moisture Correction Factor

This function is only required i f you have the optional moi sture sensor fitted.
When to set a Moi sture Correction Factor ?
Adjustment is neede d if the harve st moisture reading i s di fferent fr om that of a reference moi sture meter. A
Moisture Correction Factor is specific to each crop. To e stablish the offset, subtract the Ceres moisture
reading fr om the reference meter reading. The di fference i s the correction factor.
For example: Ceres reading = 20% and Reference meter reading = 18.5%.
So the Offset = (18.5 - 20) = -1 .5 (%)
If a large offset is needed, fir st check that the fin on the moisture sensor is clean. ( If it is clean the sensor may
need re-calibrating).
Position the screen cur sor using the up / down buttons. Key-in a new value a s necessary using the numeric
keypad and pre ss to confirm the entry *.
* You can now adjust the reading from an automatic moi sture sensor usin g the Up/Down arrow keys on the INFO
screen. However, i f the grain elevator is stopped (i.e . the moisture reading is 0%), you can onl y set a minus
offse t figure from the "Crop Select" screen.
If the syste m does not have an automatic moi sture sensor fi tted (or it is switched "OFF" in the calibration menu),
the de fault harvest moisture con tent is programmed to 16% for all crops.

13
PS8000 - CERES YIELD MONITOR

2.5 Crop density

Crop density is adjusted fr om the MAIN screen page . The instrument displays metric units of kilograms per
hectolitre (kg/hl) or lbs per bushel (lb/B) .
Regularly check the crop density (bushel weight) and a djust the value on the MAIN screen pa ge as required.
An incorrect density setting is one of the most likely causes of inaccurate yield data.
A Grain Weight Te ster (scale) is pr ovided with the Ceres. Full instructions for use including a unit conver sion
chart, are printed on the si de of the measuri ng container.
Press and hol d the adjacent button to adjust the setting.

Increase Decrease
NOTE: Resetting the density doe s not correct previously accumulated data.

2.6 Moisture Content display

2.6.1 Setting the harvest (WET) moisture content

Depending on the INST / AVE and WET / DRY di splay option set, the Ceres permanently displays one of the
following,
- Instantaneous harve st moisture %.
- Average harvest moi sture %.
- Storage moisture % (as manually programmed via the SETUP menu) .
The moisture content is displayed on both the MAIN and INFO screen pa ges.
Systems not fitted with the optional continuous moisture sensor
The harvest moi sture value is a djusted manually from the INFO screen page.
To avoi d unnecessary errors in weight rea dings, periodically check that the moisture content reading matches
that from a reference moisture meter.
Systems fitted with the optional continuous moisture sens or
The harvest moi sture value is continuously updated. It should still be checked periodically against a rea ding
from a reference moi sture meter, particularly when combining oily or dirty crops since the sensor can produce
a false reading due to extraneous material adhering to it.
The harvest moi sture value is a djusted by means of a crop- specific 'Moi sture Correction Factor' from the
SETUP screen page (ref. fi g.11 , section 2.4). It cannot be adjusted fr om the INFO screen pa ge.
NOTE : Regardless whether a moisture sensor is installed or not, the Storage moi sture content is set from the SETUP
menu.

2.6.2 Setting harvest (WET) weight or storage (DRY) weight readout

The WET/DRY display is selected fr om the INFO screen page (fi g. 4).
Yield, Work rates and Totals functions can be di splayed based on the wet weight at the harvest moisture
content or the dry weight at the user-programmed storage moisture content.
NOTE: Dry weight and yield rea douts are calculated from the AVERAGE harve st moisture since the job was started.
From the INFO screen, press the WET/DRY key to switch between wet weight and dry weight di splay. The
storage moisture content is set from the SETUP screen page (ref. fi g.11 , section 2.4).

2.6.3 Holding the %Moisture Reading

If you are getting erratic readings fr om the automatic moisture sensor, you can pre ss the button to
"freeze" the current reading. Press the button again to re sume a live reading.

14
PS8000 - CERES YIELD MONITOR

2.7 Harvest Width setting

To ensure that the Ceres accumulates area correctly when only part of the header i s in the crop, you must
adjust the harve st width setting on the Cere s to suit.
The header width i s divide d into a number of e qual width sections.
NOTE: The number of sections a s well as the full header width are pre set during installation, but can be easily re-
programmed to suit different headers.
For example ,

this represents a 6-section reel set for full cutting width.

the instrument is set for hal f the full cutting width.

Press and hol d the adjacent button to adjust the setting. Normally you must remember to adjust the width
setting back to full width as appropriate, however, the instrument can be set so that the header width
automatically resets to full width after the header i s rai sed and then l owered again e.g. when turning on the
headland. (Refer to section 3 .3.2) .

2.8 INSTANTANEOUS / AVERAGE displays

The INST / AVE display is selected from the MAIN screen page (fig. 3)

crop conditions (typically around 25% or more) .
The 'Correction' factor will take effect above the 'threshold' value .
Default = 0 .000 (% darkness per % moisture con tent above the thre shold value) Default thresh old = 0 %

'Sensor' and 'Voltage'

If no moisture sensor i s fitted, the 'Sensor' setting should be set to 'O FF'. The voltage reading is simply for
diagnostic purposes to indicate that the sensor is functioning.

4.4.3 Angle sensor

Figure 39a Figure 39b

PS-28-A.JPG PS-28-B.JPG

Movement on sloping ground alters the distribution of grain on the ele vator paddles and a ffects grain
measurement. There are four 'Slope' factors which compensate for the effect of side slope and
forward/backward slope on the flow of grain through the clean grain elevator. 'Slope ' factors are deri ved from
the measurement of grain throughput in barn tests on a wide range of combine makes and model s.
The 'LH Slope ' and 'RH Slope' factors are automatically set for the harvester model selected fr om the pre-
programmed list i n the 'Combine Select' menu and do not need normally need to be altered. The menu
displays the combine type selected ( figure 39b). All factors are listed for reference in Appendi x 1 .
The generic factors for the 'Default combine type' are automatically set as:-
Slope factor Value Sensor voltage/angle:
(% darkness per degree of slope) - calibrated range

LH -0.107 2V (-15°)
3V (level)
RH -0.208 4V (+15°)

FW 0.000 2V (-15°)
3V (level)
BW 0.000 4V (+15°)

To change a sl ope factor, position the menu pointer opposite the fi gure (fi gure 39 b), type in the new value and
press .
NOTE: If a single axis sensor is installed, leave the 'FW / BW Slope' values set to zero.
If no sen sor i s in stalled then all values shoul d be set to zero.
If the dual axis sensor is fi tted, the 'FW' and 'BW' factors are gi ven in Appendix 1 . If figure s are not given for
your combine, then leave the value s set to zero.

'V LH/RH' and 'V FW/BW'

These readings are simply for diagnostic purpose s to indicate that the sensor i s working correctly. They
display the voltage output and correspondi ng angle reading for the angle sensor in the range gi ven a bove
(±66 mV per degree of slope) .

'SET ZERO'

PS-71-A.JPG PS-71-B.JPG

The sensor will output 3V when level in either axi s. To calibrate, park the harvester on level ground. Assuming
that the sensor unit has been mounted correctly, the 'V LH/RH' and 'V FW/BW' readouts should be close to 3 V
and 0 degrees.
Move the arr ow cursor to the 'V LH/RH' and 'V FW/BW' line in turn and press the 'SET ZERO' key. The angle
sensor is then fully calibrated.

4.4.4 Temperature sensor

Figure 41a Figure 41b

PS-29-A.JPG PS-29-B.JPG

The moisture sensor also senses temperature to maintain a correct moisture measurement. The temperature
may be signi ficantly greater than ambient temperature where the moisture sensor is located. Measure the
actual temperature and enter (fi gure 41b) . For approximate Fahrenheit conver sion use the foll owing formula:-
°C = (°F - 32) x 0.555

Each time the instrument is powered down, all current calibration data i s automatically stored to 'Store A' and
overwites the previous data in 'Store A'.
For extra security the same calibration data can be manually written to 'Store B'. This data will not be
overwritten or reset to the default factors. This enables the ori ginal calibration data to be kept secure and
restored at any time.
