This report is an excellent guide for the
brachytherapy community. It is well orga-
nized in four sections and four appendices.
Its primary achievement is its consistent
description of any interstitial implant. The
report is intended for radiation oncologists,
therapy physicists, dosimetrists and stu-
dents of radiation therapy. With the advent
of computerized treatment planning sys-
tems with 3D source location capabilities
and a wide array of radionuclides with dif-
ferent activities, the brachytherapy com-
munity has come a long way from the es-
tablished classical implant systems. The
main aim of this report is to develop a
common method of analyzing an intersti-
tial implant without encouraging users to
depart from their normal practice. It will
help many radiation oncology departments
to follow this guideline and develop a pro-
tocol of their own in achieving a reason-
able dose uniformity for a given implant.
This report does an excellent job in defin-
ing the volumes ~GTV, CTV, and PTV!
based on general oncological principles
~ICRU 50! and as such making it analo-
gous to its external beam counterpart. Fol-
lowing these guidelines for reporting dose
will certainly help the brachytherapy field
in the future, to compare results and hence
relate the outcome of a treatment.
Overall, this report is an important ad-
dition to brachytherapy literature and is
highly recommended. Its clear presenta-
tions, simple and easy-to-follow illustra-
tions and instructional diagrams and ap-
pendices make it useful for these reasons
alone. With the addition of guidelines for
interstitial implants, it becomes a wel-

comed and long needed work in the litera-
ture of brachytherapy and an important ad-
dition to the brachytherapy professional’s
bookshelf. Clearly this report should be an
excellent choice for any professionals in-
volved in the practice of brachytherapy.
