Inflation in Brief

1. CPI inflation General increased by 4.1% on year-on-year basis in July 2016 as compared to an increase
of 3.2% in the previous month and 1.9% in July 2015. On month-on-month basis, it increased by 1.3% in
July 2016 as compared to an increase of 0.6% in the previous month and an increase of 0.4% in July
2015.

2. Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 4.5% on (YoY) basis in
July 2016 as compared to increase of 4.6% in the previous month and 4.1% in July 2015. On (MoM)
basis, it increased by 0.6% in July 2016 as compared to increase of 0.1% in previous month and an
increase of 0.6% in July 2015.

3. Core inflation, measured by 20% weighted trimmed mean CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 3.6% on
(YoY) basis in July 2016 as compared to 3.7% in the previous month and by 2.9% in July 2015. On
(MoM) basis, it increased by 0.5% in July 2016 as compared to an increase of 0.2% in the previous
month and 0.5% in July 2015.

4. SPI inflation on YoY increased by 1.7% in July 2016 as compared to an increase of 0.7% a month earlier
and decrease of 0.5 % in July 2015. On MoM basis, it increased by 1.3% in July 2016 as compared to an
increase of 1.1% a month earlier and an increase of 0.3% in July, 2015.

5. WPI inflation on YoY basis increased by 3.0% in July 2016 as compared to an increase of 0.2% a month
earlier and a decrease of 2.9% in July 2015. WPI inflation on MoM basis increased by 2.3% in July 2016
as compared to increase of 1.4% a month earlier and a decrease of 0.4% in July 2015.

6. Figures 1 and 2 show graphically the data of Table 1. Table 1.1 shows “Period Average” and “YoY”
percent changes in indices of three years.

 II. Consumer Price Index (CPI)
The Consumer Price Index of July 2016, has increased by 1.34% over June 2016 and increased by 4.12%
over corresponding month of the last year i.e. July 2015.

1. Month-on-month Top few commodities which varied from previous month i.e. June 2016 are given
below:-
Food Items Increased: Tomatoes (92.22%), Fresh Vegetables (28.59%), Potatoes (17.45%), Gram
whole (9.13%), eggs (8.89%), Besan (5.87%), Pulse Gram (5.63%), Sugar (3.6%), Gur (2.5%),
Onion (1.57%), Rice (1.22%), Betel leaves & Nuts (1.16%) and Cigarettes (1.12%).

Decreased: Chicken (4.51%), Fresh Fruits (2.51%), Pulse Moong (0.94%), Pulse Mash
(0.88%)Vegetable Ghee (0.36%), Tea (0.24%) and Dry Fruits (0.07%).

Non-food Items Increased: Personal Equipments (2.33%), Motor Vehicles (1.27%), House Rent
(1.25%), Mechanical Service (1.19%), Water Supply (1.06%) and Construction Input Items (1.03%).

Decreased: Marriage Hall (0.65%), Sewing Needle and Dry Cell (0.25%), Firewood Whole (0.23%)
and Household Textiles (0.06%).

2. Year-on-Year: Top few commodities which varied from previous year i.e. July 2015 are given
below:-

Food Items Increased: Tomatoes (58.41%), Gram Whole (49.77%), Pulse Mash (47.13), Pulse
Gram (45.81%), Besan (42.19%), Fresh Vegetables (36.84%), Potatoes (32.11%), Cigarettes
(17.75%), Betel Leaves and Nuts (16.12%), Pulse Masoor (9.38%), Tea (8.59%) and Readymade
Food (5.88%).

Decreased: Onion (23.35%), Chicken (18.91%), Rice (9.22%), Cooking Oil (5.97%), Pulse Moong
(2.96%), Vegetable Ghee (2.72%) and Wheat (2.32).

Non-food Items Increased: Gas (9.92%), Water Supply (8.94%), Personal Equipments (8.29%),
Doctor (MBBS) Clinic Fee (7.25%), Tailoring (7.16%), Education (7.13), Construction Wage Rates
(6.88%), Cleaning & Laundry (6.30%),Household Servants (6.17%) and Household Rent (5.79%).

Decreased: Kerosene Oil (12.94%), Motor Fuel (12.15%),Motor Vehicle Accessories (5.73%) and
Transport Services (2.13%).
III. Sensitive Price Indicator
Quintile-wise percentage changes YoY and MoM are given below in Table 3. The series from June 2015 to
July 2016 is also graphed below in Figure 3.

IV. Wholesale Price Index

The Wholesale Price Index for July, 2016 increased by 2.34% over June, 2016. It increased by 3.00% over
the corresponding month of the last year. YoY and MoM movements, from June, 2015 to July, 2016 are also graphed
below in Figure 4.

(3.94%) and Jowar (2.31%),
