Dearest Andrea,
I know how you feel, my parents were very strict too when I was your age, but I was able to get
through them when I asked them how they felt as teenagers. Do keep in mind that the only
reason they are so strict is because they want to protect you, they do not want to anger you.
You seem very important to them, maybe they’re afraid something may happen to you, but you
are old enough to protect yourself. It is also important to note that you’re probably out with
friends a lot, so there’s even less to worry about, you are never alone. Tell your parents this and
ask for a compromise, make examples of what a perfect curfew and meet up time with friends
look like to you.

1. What was New Zealand like before human settlers arrived?

It used to be covered in thick forests which were mainly inhabited by reptiles, spiders, insects
and birds, which were not able to fly.

2. Why did many birds become extinct?

The settlers hunted those birds and also brought mammals to New Zealand. Because many bird
species couldn’t fly, they became extinct because many mammals were especially dangerous
for them. Settlers also cut down many forests, the birds didn’t have anything to protect
themselves with, their homelands got destroyed.

3. What is a kiwi?
It is a round, brown bird which is very shy and only comes out at night. It also cannot fly but it
has still become an important symbol of New Zealand.
Hey Mike,
Your loneliness is very understandable, maybe ask your best friend about this. Why is he not
spending more time with you and stays in playing videogames all day? Another solution could
be co-op, start playing videogames with him, maybe that way you two can connect again and
you may also find out why he plays so much.
