1.2 Environment Configuration File

A configuration can be set up for this project and can be used for other projects where the
parameters, such as linestyles, symbols and plotting files are defined for a particular client.

The configuration simply points to the environment file, which in turn defines the location of the
User, User Library, Customer User and Customer User Library files amongst other settings.

This is documented in more detail in 12d Model Training Manual “T01: TINs”

2.0 CREATING SECTIONS

There are multiple ways to automatically create sections in 12d Model. In this exercise we
will use one of these methods to create sections along an alignment string
2.1 Cross Sections Along a String
• Select Design => X-sections => X-sections along a string

Select Tin

Enter Section Distance

Enter Left and Right Section length

Choose colour

Key in Model for Sections

Select RS2B01 super alignment string

Select <Section>

• Add the models Sections/RS2B01 and ALIGNMENT/2/ROADS to the DESIGN plan

view.

3.0 PLOTTING LONG SECTION PLOTS

3.1 Viewing Alignment Long Section
• Profile the RS2B01 super alignment in the ‘LS’ Section View.
• Add the Model tin/Existing/SURVEY to the view

3.2 Section Plotting Steps

There are five steps to plotting a section plot from 12d Model. These steps are the same
regardless of the data being plotted, these are:
1. Profile the String to be plotted
2. Add any additional Models to be included in the plot
3. Select Plot Type (i.e. Long plot, X plot or Drainage/Sewer)
4. Read in a plot parameter file (PPF) of the plot settings
5. Load the plot details from a View
Steps 1 and 2 have already been completed. Continue and produce a long section (Long
Plot) of the profiled string.

• Select ‘Plotting’ From the View Toolbar of ‘LS’ Section View.

Select <Long plot>

3.4 Select Long Section Plot Parameter File (PPF)
A Plot Parameter File (PPF) in 12d Model contains all the necessary settings to produce a
plot. These PPFs contain numerous settings to enable the resultant plot to look exactly how
the User requires. Select the

3.5 Load the Plot details from a View

Loading the View details enables 12d to set the following:
• The string profiled to plot as the Primary String
• Any other Models to plot as ‘Corridor Models’
• The current vertical exaggeration of the View

3.6 Choosing a Plotter Type

There are many variations of plotters in 12d Model. User defined plotters can be added and
specified in the plotters.4d file. There are base plotting engines that can be selected.

Select and choose

model Selecting this plotter will plot the printed data into a Model in 12d. These
Model(s) can be added to a View for preview, changing and exporting.
Choosing this plotter will pen mapping from the base pmf.4d file for colours
only, it will not map string weights

PDF Options Selecting these plotters will use the in-built pdf writer installed with 12d
Model. This will created an pdf file type for opening, viewing and plotting
Choosing this plotter will pen mapping from installed custom files with a
.pmf extension

DWG Options Selecting these plotters will print to a dwg file type into the working folder.
The drawing version is determined by the engine set in the plotters.4d file.
This can be changed to suit the User’s needs.
Choosing this plotter will either use pen mapping from the base pmf.4d or
installed custom files with a .dwg extension depending on the type chosen.

XPS Options Selecting these plotters will use the in-built xps writer installed with 12d
Model. This will created an xps file type for opening, viewing and plotting

3.7 Plotting to Model

If plotting to a model, the User can choose what to do with multiple sheets of sections. These
can either be plotted to individual models in the same paper position or automatically
translated and merged into a single model for preview and export.

3.8 Errors and Find

When plotted, there may be times where errors are reported of the PPF. These will appear in
panels or in the output window.
Should errors occur, 12d Model PPF editors have a ‘Find’ option for the most common
settings that require changing or selecting from project to project.
These settings can be found by selecting the <Find> button.

Select <Find>

Select <Tins>

4.0 PLOTTING CROSS SECTION PLOTS

4.1 Viewing Cross Section String
• Profile a string on the model Sections/RS2B01 in the XS Section View.
• Change the vertical exaggeration of the view to 2x.

To plot a cross section type plot, we can follow the five steps to plotting a section from 12d
Model.
1. Profile the String to be plotted
2. Add any additional Models to be included in the plot
3. Select Plot Type (i.e. Long plot, X plot or Drainage/Sewer)
4. Read in a plot parameter file (PPF) of the plot settings
5. Load the plot details from a View
Step 1 has already been completed. For step 2, add the Model tin SURVEY to the view.
Continue and produce a Cross Section (X plot) of the profiled string.

4.6 Layouts & Margins

For 12d Model Cross Section and Drainage Long Section plots, the number of strings and
the calculated datum is determined by the available plotting area. This is determined by the
following parameters:
• Sheet Size
• Available Plotting Height
• Margin Values
• Sub-plot Gaps
These values can be found and manipulated under the ‘Plot sheet layout’ item of the PPF
tree.

4.7 X-Section Filtering

Filtering cross sections allows the user to only plot the cross section strings required, rather
than ALL the strings in a Model. Filtering by chainage separation can be done under the ‘X
section filtering’ item of the PPF tree.

Tick to filter x-sections

Enter value for filtering

4.8 Cuts
Cuts can be used to automatically label and symbolize where another string cross or ‘cuts’
the string being profiled. This can be used even for strings which fall outside the profiles
string, as long as extension values have been set.
Setting up cuts can be found under the ‘Cuts’ item of the PPF tree.

4.9 Paired Cuts

Similar to cuts, paired cuts are a way of labelling the space between two cut strings on a
section. These can be labelled a number of ways, including distance between, 3d distance
etc.
Creating paired cut strings
We will duplicate two strings from the Cadastral boundary Model so we can set up these
names in the paired cuts area.
• Select String => Strings edit => Duplicate

• Select the road reserve boundary on the left side of the road:
