B.E. Even Semester Examinations 2014-15

Subject : Design Of Concrete Structure
Code : CE-604

Time: 3 Hours Full Marks: 70

The marks for each question are indicated in the right side of relevant question.
2 marks are for cleanliness.
Answer any four questions.
Unless and othe, wise mentioned, answers should be written in accordance with the LSM.

1. (a) Prove that Xu. ma.~ does not depend on the grade of concrete. Evaluate the Xu, m"" for Fe 415 grade
of steel (show sketch). 5
(b) A beam is supported on two walls with both end fixed. The clear distance between the walls (each of
375 mm thick) is 5500 mm. The beam is subjected to super imposed load is 10.5 KN/m. Using M 20
concrete and Fe 415 steel and assuming singly reinforced beam, calculate A., at the section of maximum
B.M. and shear reinforcement (using 8 mm dia. bar) at the section of maximum shear force. Considering
the development length, show a sketch of a part of the beam at one end (Bent-up bars Do not Provide
· any). 12
2. (a) Explain clearly with necessary sketch the requirement of tension and compresive reinforcement (A <I
&ASC ) in case of a doubly reinforced beam. 5
(b) A beam is resting on two walls 500 mm thick, spaced at a clear distance of 6m. (Simply Supported).
The super imposed load acting on the beam is 30 KN/m. The size of the beam is 300 mm (width) x 500
mm (overall depth). Using M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steel find out Ase & A., and stirrups (for maximum
B .M. and shear force respectively), using 8 mm dia stirrups. Bent-up bars are not needed.

3. (a) Describe the guidelines laid down in IS : 456 for providing maximum diameter of main
reinforcement, maximum spacings and effective depth of a one way slab (for simply supported,
both end fixed and cantilever. 5
(b) Design (depth & reinforcements at the section of maximum B.M.) of the waist slab of a staincase
having 250 mm tread and 160 mm rise of steps with a live load 6 KN/m2 • The effective span is
3050 mm (simply supported). Use M 20 concrete Fe 415 steel. Draw the RCC section and show
the reinforcement detail also. 12
