Prepare the main topmast (part 74) 74
according to the plan, using the sapele
dowel that came with Stage 143.

B
72
Cut the crosstrees supports (parts 75)
from 2 x 3mm wooden strip. Shape
them and glue to the main topmast in
the area shown. When the glue has
dried, test-fit the mainmast cap onto the
end of the mast (inset).

C
77
Glue the crosstrees (part 77) above the
crosstrees supports.

D
77
Tie a double block (D) around the
main topmast with thread (B), above
the crosstrees but hanging through the
hole in the trees in front of the mast.

E
Tie the two double blocks (D) and the
two single blocks (C) to the crosstrees.

F
Create the mainmast cap guides (parts
73) with the 5 x 5mm wooden strip
from Stage 139. Cut two 15mm lengths,
glue them together, then sand them
into a semi-circular shape. File a groove
along the centre of each.

73

G
Take the mainmast cap (part 72) and 72
glue the guides (parts 73) to it. Stain
the cap and guides, and when dry, add D
the eyebolts (A) and suspend the two
double blocks (D) from those on either
side, as shown.

73

H
72
Place the mast cap onto the top of
the mainmast. Pass the topmast down
through the hole in the mast cap until 74
it rests in the corresponding hole in the
trees of the maintop. Apply glue to all
of the contact points between the masts,
cap and top to secure them.

583

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step

I
Use 0.8mm thread to create parts 70, 70
looping them over the mast cap guide
and through the U-shaped guides (this 70
one should have a D block at the end).

J
Secure part 29 to the mast cap guide
with a little drop of glue. Pass the
end of part 29 straight down through
the hole in the trestletrees. Cross
the blocks (D) over and pass them
through the foretop, on the outside of
the trestletrees.

should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.

79
Following the mainmast plan, prepare
the main topgallant mast (part 78) from
the 6mm dowel received with Stage 78
143. Cut lengths of 2 x 3mm wooden
strip to create the hounds (parts 79). 76
Glue the supports into place, as well
as the truck (part 80) and the main
topmast cap (part 76). Varnish the mast
when finished.

blocks (C and D) to the main topgallant C
mast, as indicated on the plan. C

C
Combine the main topgallant mast
with the topmast. The bottom of the
topgallant mast should fit into the hole
in the crosstrees in front of the topmast,
and the top of the topmast should fit
into the hole in the main topmast cap.

78

D
C
Tie two blocks (C) to the mainmast and
main topmast with thread (B), as shown.

E 81
91
Prepare the four yards of the mainmast,
(81, 91, 96 and 99) following the plan.

the rigging, blocks, irons, studding sail
booms and slings.

G
81
Place the main yard (81) onto the
mainmast, at the point shown on the
plan. Take the gooseneck (L) and tie it
around the mast. Tie it tight enough so
that it is secured to the mast, but loose
enough that it retains some movement.

H
Tie the main topyard (91) to the
topmast, just below the crosstrees.

I 99 96 91
Tie the main topgallant (96) and main 81
royal (99) yards to the corresponding
points on the mainmast.

J
Place the mainmast into the hole in the
middle of the deck, aft of the foremast,
as shown. This is a temporary fitting,
so don’t glue the masts into place until
instructed to do so.

B
Mark a 13mm length onto a 2 x 5mm
strip of African walnut. With a half- 13mm
round file, remove a semi-circular
section in the centre of it (inset) until
it matches the curvature of the mast, 102
as shown. Then shape the outside to
match the inner semi-circular part.
Glue this part, the driver boom saddle
(part 102), to the mizzenmast at the
point shown on the plan.

589

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step

C
Assemble the mizzenmast parts, then
add the fittings to the mast, mizzentop
and crosstrees.

D
Pass the end of the gammoning
(part 133) up through the hole cut
in the beakhead grating, up over the
bowsprit, then down through the hole
in the grating on the other side of the
bowsprit. Adjust the position of the
gammoning so that it sits in the slot in 133
the bowsprit closest to the deck.

E
Loop the gammoning back up through
the hole in the grating, then over the
bowsprit and back down. Repeat until
it is looped around five times, then
secure the ends with glue. Next, cut a
length of thread, wrap it around the
middle of the gammoning and secure
the end with glue.

590

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step

F
Cut another length of thread to create
the second gammoning, forward of the
first. Secure the ends after you have
made five turns around the bowsprit
and gratings. Then wrap another length
around the centre of the gammoning.

G
Secure the ends of the thread wrapped
around the gammoning with glue, and
cut off the excess.

H
Position the ship upright, and
support the sides so it remains in that
position. Insert the foremast into the
corresponding hole in the deck, with
the yards on the bow side of the mast.

591

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step

I
Apply glue to the contact points
between the deck and the mast. Make
sure that the mast remains vertical while
the glue dries.

J
Glue the mainmast into the hole in the
centre of the deck.

The photo shows how the assembly
should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.

mizzen topgallant mast at the point
indicated on the plan.

A
Prepare one length of thread to create
the foremast shrouds (134), indicated
in the list in figure A of the rigging plan.
Pass the end of the thread up through
the foretop, between the foremast and
the fore topmast and then back down
through the top. Pull the thread until 134
both sides are at equal lengths on either
side of the ship. The shrouds should be
positioned behind the yard.

B
Follow the same process to place all 10
foremast shrouds.

134

597

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step

C
To prevent the shrouds from moving,
apply glue to the points where they are
in contact with the mast.

D
Loop the end of the first shroud
thread around a 5mm deadeye (F) at
the position shown in figure A on the
rigging plan. Glue the thread above the 134
deadeye to secure it, and cut away the
excess thread when dry.

E
Wrap some 0.1mm thread around the
doubled section of shroud thread above
the deadeye. Apply glue to secure it,
and cut off the excess.

598

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step

F 134
Cut one of the lanyards (parts 135)
and make a knot at one end. Insert the
thread from the back of the deadeye, 135
through the left-hand hole. Pull the end
until the knot stops against the back of
the deadeye. Feed the thread through
the left-hand hole in the front deadeye
fixed to the chainwale, going in from
the front.

G
Follow the diagram in figure A on the
rigging plan to lace up the rest of the
holes in the two deadeyes.

H
Tie thread around the shroud, just
above the deadeye. Apply a little glue
to secure the thread, and then cut away
the excess.

599

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step

I
Attach the rest of the 5mm deadeyes
to the shrouds, to correspond with the
5mm deadeyes on the chainwales.

J
When all of the 5mm deadeyes are
fitted, the shrouds should look like this.

K

should look at this stage. Keep any left-
over material, as it will be used later.
