Abstract
Senior Year Projects (SYP) are implemented in engineering programs to evaluate the abilities of
graduating engineers to apply technical and other professional skills to solve real-world
engineering applications. SYP should develop abilities in undergraduates to orient them towards
employability or graduateness. Despite the importance of SYP, most of the literature on project
supervision has been concerned only with postgraduates; moreover, many students tend to
underestimate the criticality of this phase for their careers. Therefore, a complete overall look is
proposed to evaluate the current situation and try to reestablish the original deliverable outcomes
of the Senior Year Project (SYP).
Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) is performed to investigate the aspects for the degradation
of quality in the Senior Year Projects.
A thorough SYP standard is established to treat the causes of degradation of SYP quality, which
was engineered as a process flow chart form by streamlining the collected information,
instructions, QA requirements, and RCFA results.

Conclusions
SYP project should provide a challenging educational experience and it should emphasize
creativity, independence, a methodical approach, and professional delivery. Moreover they
should enhance skills that are not specific to an individual academic discipline and are difficult
to assess quantitatively like time and project management, budget and accounting and technical
writing.

Through RCFA its was found out that the groups that should be targeted for improvement are the
department, the resources, the supervisors and the students. Also, the needed areas of
improvements are evident and must be kept in mind while establishing the process flow,
constructing strategic management and creating the evaluation forms.

The SYP process flow should start with estimation of maximum number of students per advisor,
then getting the project proposal, following that the department board meeting to discuss ABET
adherence, the student preparation.
