Horticulture forms an important sector of economy of the people of J&K state and as a
result requires technological boost for further improvement in cultivation of fruit crops. The
productivity of fruit crops is direct proportional to the quality of the plant material raised.
The area in question is suitable for cultivation of walnut, and apple exclusively, besides,
other fruits as well. There is increasing demand of quality Plant material with respect to
grafted stock of walnut plants. It is a fact that fruit plant Nurseries have a vital role to play in
systematic work plan for generating quality plant material for distribution amongst the
growers. It is pertinent to mention that the district has tremendous potential for fresh/dry
crops. Hence, further advances in cultivation of the fruit crop in question is the need of the
time.
Location and Infrastructure Requirements for polyhouse cultivation

Unit
Location/Climate
Polyhouse cultivation is most important technique/Practice that is used to cultivate plants
in cold/hot seasons of our country. It is used in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh &
Uttarakhand. J&K is the main producing State of aplle, which contributes more than 85%
of the total production of the country. Climate should be free from frost in spring and
from extra heat in summer. At bloom, temperature of even 2-3 degree Celsius below
freezing halts in killing of large percentage of walnut flowers.

Soils
Apple do best on soil where root can penetrate deep evenly. In addition to good topsoil,
subsoil must be free fo rock, impervious clay or layers of gravel. Most suitable soil is well
dried.
The soil at the Nursery is very fertile and scientifically tested with a PH of 6.5 and rich in
micro nutrients and minerals good for plant growth. The Laboratory test certificate from the
Soil Analysis Lab of the directorate of Horticulture Kashmir, Government of Jammu and
Kashmir is enclosed with this DPR.
Irrigation source
Availability of good quality assured irrigation resources is an important pre-requisite
for setting up of a commercial nursery production unit. The said land has assured
canal irrigation.

Availability of labour
Nursery production is highly labor intensive where both skilled and semi-skilled labor are
critical inputs. Therefore, timely availability of labor needs to be ensured while short listing
the location. Since nursery operations like grafting, layering, budding, etc., are highly skilled
activities, availability of skilled labour and / or training and capacity building in such
operations and technical support from KVKS and horticulture department are crucial for
success of commercial nursery unit.
Sufficient manpower both skilled and semi skilled shall be employed on daily as well as
on monthly basis on government approved wages. In addition to this a Horticultural Expert
is also hired who visits the farm on weekdy basis and on SOS basis. There are other experts
from plant pathology and other departments whose expert opinion is on and often taken
and implemented in letter and spirit.
Ares requirement
For setting up a nursery unit to produce about 10,500 grafts/planting material, an area
of about 5 Kanals with assured irrigation facilities is required.

Status of Nursery
Nursery in question is spread over an area of 05 Kanals. In the proposed plan an area of 03
kanals could be utilized especially for growing of grafted walnut plant material and 02 Kanal
for mother block and other things. The quality plant material would be arranged from a
reputed registered source for its transplantation at site so as to serve as a demonstration
unit for transfer of latest technology for the people who are interested in growing of good
cultivars of walnut on scientific lines.

Project Proposal:
A proposal for the establishment of Polyhouse cultivation (apple) thatwill meet the
following objectives:
1. Raising of quality plant material.
2. Demonstration of newly introduced varieties from CITH & SKUAST.
3. Requirement in the technology of Fruit crop with good Horticulture Practices.
