1. General Description of the Small Scale Biomass Gas generation

Project Power Activities:-

Unit 1x 25MW Biomass Independent Power Generation Project at Lauan

Antique Philippines.

Location of the Biomass Renewable Energy Independent

Power Plant : Antique Province Sub Station
PHILIPPPINES

2.Purpose of the project;

The purpose of the Lauan Antique Province Substation Biomass
Thermal power project is to utilize biomass fuel like Municipal Waste Rice
Hull Wood Chip Elephant Grass, etc.. for generation of electricity for in-
house consumption and export surplus to the electricity grid. The project
activities indirectly helps in reducing the power deficit in the Area Antique
Province Grid system’s dependency on fossil fuel resources [ primarily
coal and gas ] and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases [GHG]. The
project activity also contributes to an economically, environmentally and
sustainable development in the region through the commercial operation
of the power plant and thereby creating sustainable stakeholder value.

The proposal shows the proposed alternative heat source from

biomass Thermal power generation (combined power and heating), which
can significantly reduce the operation and maintenance cost of the
cornstarch processing plants.

``The framework of this proposal is to show how a biomass Power

generation system works. With the biomass power plant to power system
can be robust, reliable and with the use of indigenous fuel the Municipal
Waste Rice Hull Wood Chip Elephant Grass.
Nowadays, the amount of use able power being produced from
biomass is very small relative to the biomass resources available for this
use and although the use of biomass power plants rely on less efficient
boiler/steam turbine technology; have a higher installed price per kilo
Watt; and draw on fuel supplies that are bulkier, less homogeneous, and
more difficult to fire and handle than fossil fuels (especially relative to oil
and natural gas which are not solids).

However, the reasons for consideration of the biomass Thermal power

Plant option are:
(1)Lower operating costs.
(2)Disposal of biomass residues combined with the production of
electricity and heat,
(3)Power production from abundant indigenous biomass resources,
(4)Power for locations rich in biomass resources, and
(5)It is a renewable energy option. These have been chosen for many
applications.

Due to feedstock availability issues, dedicated biomass Renewable Power

Plants are typically of smaller size but in Cogeneration mode, the total efficiency
can reach 85 percent-90 percent.

The project will entail a total amount of Php 6,750,000,000.00 [ Six Billion
Seven Hundred Fifty Million pesos]. 1 Unit 25 Mega Watt. The bulk of the
project cost shall be used for the purchase of equipment such as biomass
power generation equipment, Turbine Generator set and balance of
equipment including Civil and site development work for power plant.

Equity IRR and project IRR of 11 and 06 per cent respectively can be
achieved from the project during the 8-year project duration.
As output of simulation, overall power generation electrical and thermal
efficiency of the system are tabulated. All the technical details including
formula, detailed description of the technology and related calculations
are presented in the attached Annex.
3.Features of the Projects:-

The project involves the implementation of a biomass based power

co generation plant using Steam Turbine to generate Electricity from
Generator. The installed capacity of the plant is 1 Unit x 25MW. The fuel
used in primarily agro waste like elephant grass, Rice Husk, Wood Chips
& Municipal Waste etc, The Generating electricity being meets captive
requirements of Anyique Province Area and the surplus electricity being
sold to the grid. The generated electricity replaces a mixture of coals and
gas based power generation. The total amount of emission reductions
[CERs] to be delivered is expected 183,600,000.00 power output kw
Approximate. The implementation of the project also leads to additional
income and employment in the region [approximately 30,000 man days of
work per year’s]
4.Project Scenario:-

The project is limited to the captive electricity consumption and the

electricity export to the electricity grid, electricity generation highly
dependent on fossil fuel in the grid system and thereby reducing emission
in the electricity grid system.

STEAM TURBINE GENERATOR & AUXILIARIES (As per OEM Standards)

GENERAL

The turbine generator equipment basically comprises the turbine

mounted on base frame, gearbox and generator, directly mounted on
foundation and other items such as ejectors, turbine control cubicles,
generator control cubicle, valves and piping.
The following design features characterize the turbine (these are
typical and may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer)
OUTER CASING OF THE TURBINE

The upper and lower casing halves are almost symmetrical, except parts
for the live- steam connection and the supports. All thermal stresses in the case
of load changes or temperature variations are thus reduced to a minimum. It is
horizontally split and held together by thermally pre-stressed expansion bolts.
The surfaces of the casing joints are steam-tight milled.

INLET PART / NOZZLE CASING

The hydraulically operated emergency stop valve has no mechanical

passage to the atmosphere, is intrinsically fully enclosed, and is steam tight. The
operating power is produced by means of a built-in spring and the steam
pressure. A pilot control device, working on the three-way principle directs the
hydraulic signal required to initiate the opening of the valve. The control signal is
received from the open oil safety circuit. The closing procedure is activated by
the interruption of the control oil signal and by the spring. A steam strainer is
built into the ESV body.
The steam is admitted through control valves located in a tubular
casing. The valve casing is welded to the bottom part of the turbine casing.
The valve block housing with control valves is fitted with the hydraulic
actuator on one end and with the emergency trip valve on the other end. Valve
actuators are installed to adjust the valve opening to the necessary steam flow.
The steam quantity corresponds to the hydraulic signal, which is determined by
output, steam pressure or speed.

SERVO-MOTOR

With a piston forced by a spring to close on one side, hydraulic oil

pushes on the other side to open the valves.
EXHAUST STEAM CASING

The exhaust steam casing may be of cast or welded design.

The two casing halves are assembled with bolts at the horizontal split.
The bolts are also employed for bolting the exhaust casing to the HP turbine casing at 8
the vertical split flange.
Purok Maunlad brgy. Irawan, Puerto Princesa palawan
GEL-TECH CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION
GUIDE-BLADE CARRIERS
The suspension and construction of the guide blade carriers shall
ensure high thermal elasticity and easy assembly. The thermal masses of
guide blade carriers and the rotor shall be well harmonized so as to cause only little relative
expansion during transient operating conditions.
ROTOR

The turbine rotor shall be made from one single forging and shall be
subjected to severe tests (non-destruction tests, over-speed test).
The bladed rotor shall be high-speed balanced under vacuum conditions.

LABYRINTH SEALS

The labyrinths ensure contact-free sealing of the shaft, balance piston, and
blading. The sealing effect is achieved by the fact that the steam passes through
a great number of successive ring gaps and ring spaces whereby the pressure is
converted into velocity energy and the leak steam flow is limited by the
increasing steam volume.

BLADING

The rotor blades shall be milled from the solid. The roots shall be fitted
radially to the rotor and the blades shall have an integral shroud. The guide
blades shall be made from drawn profile material.

Those rotor blades which, due to their height, are exposed to high
centrifugal forces, shall have no integral shrouding, but shall be fitted with
damping wires instead. The damping wires shall be loosely inserted into bores
and shall develop their damping effect in operation. In the wet-steam zone, the
inlet edges shall be flame hardened in the upper area, if necessary.

The guide blades shall be fastened in the fixing groove of the carrier.
Sealing against the shaft shall be done with double labyrinth sealing tips.
LUBE OIL SYSTEM

The Lube oil system supplies the necessary lubricating oil under all
conditions to the bearings of turbine, gear box and generator. The lubrication oil
system consists of the oil supply section and the oil cooler and filtration system.

The oil supply section consists of oil reservoir, on top of which are
mounted pumps and oil vapour extraction fan (with oil filter). The oil cooling
and filtration section consists of oil coolers and filters

DRAIN SYSTEM

The drain system ensures proper draining of the steam turbine during
start-up, normal operation and coast-down. It prevents water from entering into
the turbine. Each drain line shall have a manually controlled drain (used during
start-up and after shut down).
GENERATOR

The generator shall be of the end-shield bearing design, with

top/bottom mounted air/water coolers, cylindrical pole rotor and brush-less 0

excitation system.
Purok Maunlad brgy. Irawan, Puerto Princesa palawan
GEL-TECH CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION

The lower part of the casing shall consist of bearing support plates, side
beams and a bottom plate, all of which shall form a single unit.
The stator shall be a separate unit with the end plates bolted to the side
beams of the lower casing part to achieve maximum stiffness. With this
arrangement, all dynamic and static loads are transmitted directly to the
foundation.
The rotor shaft shall be a one-piece forging made of high quality steel. The
rotor shall be of the cylindrical pole design with a single layer copper bar winding
surrounding each pole. The coils shall be compressed and cured under heat and
pressure and shall be insulated from the pole plates and rotor hub by a collar of
laminated glass fibre.

Two axial flow fans shall supply cooling air to the stator and rotor from both
sides.
The hot air is discharged radially at the centre of the machine and is re-
cooled in the air/water heat exchangers mounted on top.

mechanical draft counter-flow cooling tower.

Air shall be drawn from air entry at the bottom and shall pass through
heat and mass transfer FILM surfaces. Design air flow rate shall be discharged from the
axial flow FRP bladed fans at the top. Hot water shall be uniformly distributed from the
top.
Purok Maunlad brgy. Irawan, Puerto Princesa palawan
GEL-TECH CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION

The cooling tower shall be designed taking into consideration the requirement of
continuous, stable and reliable operation with best availability. Safety and reliability shall be
the two paramount considerations in the design of cooling tower.

WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM

Purchaser shall provide the raw water at the inlet of water treatment plant.
Based on the actual analysis scheme may be changed and same shall be confirmed during
detail engineering.

Multi Grade Sand Filter

The Clarified water / Bore water is passed through a Multi grade sand filter to reduce
the Suspended solids. The suspended particles in the raw water get entrapped in the filter
media. Influent water with suspended solids is pumped to the Multi grade sand filter. Media
used for this filtration is Graded Sand. Filter need to be backwash with influent water at least
once in a day for 10 to 15 min.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse Osmosis process is a membrane process in which a synthetic semi-

permeable membrane is used to separate water from dissolved impurities. When a semi-
permeable membrane separates a dilute and concentrate solution of salts, due to osmosis,
the water from the dilute solution side passes through the membrane to the concentrated
side till osmotic equilibrium is attained. Now, if the pressure is applied and increased
gradually on the concentrated side, the flow of water continues to reduce till the applied
pressure reverses the direction of flow of water and water from the concentrated side enters
the dilute side. This process is called the Reverse Osmosis.
It is very essential to ensure that the water fed to reverse osmosis membranes is free
from particulate matter to prevent membrane fouling. Also, the water should be free from
organic matter, heavy metals and oxidizing agents like free chlorine.
The Reverse Osmosis Unit comprises a high-pressure pump, pressure tubes and
membranes as the main components. The high-pressure pump boosts the feed water to a
pressure required to desalinate the water. About 70% of the feed water is available as the
permeate (product) and the balance is the reject from the system. The permeate is then
passed through the degasser unit.

Degasification unit

The treated effluent from the Reverse Osmosis unit is fed to the degasser tower to
reduce carbon dioxide content. The degasser tower is a packed column (Pall Rings) where
water, sprayed from top of the packing, breaks into fine droplets, thereby increasing the
surface area for contact. These droplets come in contact with a counter current flow of air
supplied by degasser fans. In the scrubbing action, therefore, the unstable carbonic acid, is
broken into water and carbon dioxide. The air containing liberated carbon dioxide is vented
and degassed water (Free from alkalinity or carbonic acids) is collected in the degassed
water tank, from where it is pumped to the anion exchanger.

How to monitor

First step is to select critical parameters like: temp profile across flue
gas path - the radiant zone, convective heat transfer surfaces, economizer and APH zones, as
also percentage O2 in flue gas, exit flue gas temperature, fuel & steam flow, run hours, feed
water characteristics etc. Thus parameters selected could be on-line, set point parameters or
off-line parameters like: fuel calorific value enabling calculations of efficiency / steam to fuel
ratio, availability etc.
Second step is to establish connectivity for pick up of this data from PLC
and/or sensors and configure it in a data historian. With viewer function of
database, the stored data can be viewed in tabular, excel, or PDF formats. This
enables trending / analysis of data for periodic reviews & corrections.
Lastly customized software algorithms can be built for developing alerts,
reports as needed by the users.
Benefits of monitoring

Managing Efficiency, Load and Costs Boiler efficiency, power

consumption by ID/FD/Stokers are evaluated continuously through direct
and indirect methods and SMS/Alerts are generated as needed.

Operational patterns like drum level patterns, steam pressure and

consumption patterns through the day etc. are recorded continuously. Any
abnormalities in operating patterns, like sudden variations in steam demand, or
irregularity in fuel supply can be easily identified and rectified.
Improved Reliability and Maintenance.

Temperature profile can provide vital information on state of fouling

and corrective measures can be taken in time.
Blow-down practices can be analyzed and irregularities can be
corrected by monitoring blow-down frequency and quantity.
Through continuous monitoring of dissolved oxygen and pH of feed
water, de- aeration effectiveness can be improved and boiler corrosion risks
can be minimized, thus enhancing the life of the boiler.

By monitoring feed water conductivity any abnormality in the water

quality can help identify issues in the water treatment plant on a proactive
basis.

Individual tracking of run hours of ID/FD fans, grates etc. empowers users
to perform condition based maintenance of moving parts as against traditional
time based maintenance.

Thus reducing maintenance costs in terms of reduction of downtime & spare

parts consumption.
11.Financial Aspects

The objective of the financial analysis is to examine the financial return on

investments needed to implement the proposed power plant project. The
evaluations were carried out by comparing the costs and incremental revenues in terms

of financial internal rate of return & cash flow statement of the project.
