More and more people are spending a lot of time and money studying foreign languages. Is this a positive
or negative trend?
It is clear that, there is a range of advantages when studying a second language. Firstly, some
proponents argue that those who learn good foreign languages,which might provide them with an
opportunity to work or study in other countries. For example, students have to reach a minimum
6.5 ielts in order to study abroad, or workers have to take a short language course before going to
work in other contries. Besides, studying foreign languages is a great way to seek a well paid-job as
well as easily move up the career ladder in the future. For instance, in Viet Nam, there are a great
deal of investors who come from many parts of the world, so when they interview applicants for
high positions at their company, they often require candidates have to a certificate about foreign
languages. Furthermore, studying forein languages helps many people to become more confident
in a conversations with foreigners and it is a great way to explore new cultures and traditions.
On the other hand, spending lots of time and money for studying foreign languages has several
disadvantages. Firstly, Spending almost time to study a second language means that people have
less time on working and relaxation, which leads to tired, stressed and working productivity
decreases. Furthermore, if they consume a huge amount of money for studying foreign languages,
they will be insufficient money to fund their plans, pay bills, or even reduce their standard of living.
In conclusion, studying foreign languages might bring some benefits such as: going abroad, getting
a well paid job, discovering new cultures and traditions. Nevertheless, the negatives effects should
be considered.
