Chest Surgery Report

Chest Surgery (Thoracic Surgery)
– Introduction
• Include a variety of operations in your chest (thorax)
• In addition to your heart and lungs
• Can involve your esophagus, trachea or other areas
• A heart valve repair, lung tumor removal or aneurysm repair
in your chest all fall under the thoracic surgery category.
Conditions in Chest Surgery
• Stretched blood vessels (aneurysms).
• Congenital (present at birth) heart issues.
• Irregular heart rhythms.
• Heart failure.
• Coronary artery disease.
• Heart or lung transplants.
• Heart valve issues.
• Lung cancer.
• Tumors in esophagus or thymus.
• Swallowing issues (dysphagia).
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
• Pneumothorax
Equipment in Chest Surgery
• 1-Chest Tube:

• flexible tube that can be inserted through the chest


wall between the ribs into the pleural space
• drain blood, fluid, or air from around your lungs

• 2- I.V fluids

• liquids given to replace water, sugar and salt that


you might need if you are ill or having an
operation
• Most common in chest srurgery: Glucose saline,
Normal saline, Glucose Water

• 3- Urinary catheter
• flexible tube that is inserted into the bladder to
drain urine

• drain the bladder of urine while the patient is


unable to use the toilet normally.

• check the amount of urine produced by the patient


to ensure that the kidneys are functioning alright.
Common Drugs in Chest Surgery
• Aminophylline - relieve cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, and troubled breathing
by increasing the flow of air through the bronchial tubes

• Dexamethasone - relief for inflamed areas of the body

• Cyklokapron - stop or reduce unwanted bleeding

• Ceftriaxone - treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body

• Omeprazole - treat indigestion and heartburn, and acid reflux.

• Flagyl - Treat infections of the blood, brain, lung, bones, genital tract, pelvic area,
stomach and intestines

• How to wound care and proper wound dressing
• How to set up chest tube drainage bag and how to connect it
• I administered medications such as hydrocortisone and dexamethasone
• I learned how to set up the I.V infusion pump and how to connect it to fluids
• How to mix the drugs and administrate them in the I.V fluid
• We took medical cases and learned some information about diseases the patients had
• The Dexamethasone administration has to be slow
• If there is medication error we fix it by giving normal saline to the patient
• I learned to communicate with the patients and have a good relationship with them

• I learned to give Ceftriaxone and Flagyl and Paracetamol and Normal saline and
glucose saline
• I learned how to dress the wound
• I learned to put Fucidin , an antibiotic ointment
• I observed the I.M administration of Voltaren which used to treat pain and reduce
inflammation
• I learned a CYKLOKAPRON drugs used for heavy bleeding
• I helped some of the patients families bring blood from the blood bank

• I learned how to remove the chest tube and helped remove one from the patient's
chest
• I sterilized the wound site after removing the chest tube
• I made a bandage for more than one patient lying in the thoracic surgery ward
• I contributed to giving intravenous medications within the specified time
• I wrote down All the medications I.V gave are in the patient's record.
• I helped some of the patients' families bring blood from the blood bank to the thoracic
surgery ward, and that was really cool.

• I learned how to draw blood and sutures
• I dressed a patient's wounds
• I removed an abdominal tube from a patient
• I learned how to read a patient's file and give him the appropriate doses of treatment, I
was given omeprazole, paracetol and ceftriaxone.
• I installed an inhaler for a patient.
• It helped develop my skills in communicating with patients and how to work as a team
with staff.
