In rehearsal, strive for a very fluid legato with sensitive text declamation. Sing the anthem
on a focused neutral syllable such as "noo" until uniform choral timbre and good
intonation are achieved. Many of the phrases begin with an anacrusis or "pick up" (e.g.,
mm. 6-8). Avoid the temptation to unduly accent the anacrusis. Instead, sing the anacrusis
lightly, with forward motion to the downbeat of the next measure, and emphasize the
word on the downbeat (e.g., "raise" in ill. 7).
Appropriate for worship services throughout the year, On Eagle's Wings may be
especially appropriate for baptisms, funerals, weddings, as a benediction anthem or for
early Lent. Suggested corresponding lectionary readings for Lent include Deuteronomy
26: 1-11, Psalm 91, Luke 4: 1-13 and Romans 10: 8b-13. One basic homiletical theme is
life passages: God is ever present to guide and sustain us, in joy and in sorrow, as we
journey through life.
