Character Sketch: Stanley Yelnats

Holes
Summary: A young boy named Stanley is send to a boot
camp called “Camp Green Lake” for a false
accusation.from a baseball player. At the camp, he
becomes friends with Mike Wazowski a.k.a “Zero.”
Zero then runs away from camp, and Stanley follows
suit. They seek refuge on the top of a mountain
named “God’s Thumb” and they survive on onions.
Soon, Zero and Stanley sneak back into Camp Green
Lake to find a treasure. They get the treasure but,
the warden of the camp finds them. In the end,
Stanley and Zero are freed from Camp Green Lake and
are sent back to their families.

Description: Stanley Yelnats. His last name is his

first name spelled backwards. Stanley is a
trustworthy, courageous, and friendly. He is the
best of friends with Zero. He used to be a lonely
person before he was sent to Camp Green Lake

Trustworthy: Stanley demonstrates his

trustworthiness throughout the story by helping
Zero, and keeping his word. For instance,by keeping
his promise of giving a portion of the treasure he
finds to Zero. Keeping his promise, Zero was able to
hire his own private agents to find his mother.
Another example of trustworthiness when one of his
campmates tells him to stop having Zero to help him
dig his hole. Stanley then tells Zero to stop
helping him and from then on Stanley dug his own
holes without Zero’s help.

Courageous: Stanley is courageous. He shows that he

has the guts to stand up against the counselors when
they make fun of Zero for not knowing how to read
and spell. Stanley then teaches Zero how to read and
write. He also displays that he has enough courage
to go find Zero when he flees. Stanley does so by
attempting to steal a water truck to go after Zero
but fails, then he runs off.

Friendly: Stanley shows how friendly he is by trying

to become friends with all his campmates. He this by
starting small talk with his campmates, and doing
his best to please them. However, he becomes the
best of comrades with Zero. Stanley earns the
nickname “Caveman” from his campmates, acknowledging
that Stanley is one of them now.

Stanley is one of those characters that has

different personalities. You can’t really tell what
his emotions are, because he usually has a neutral
expression. However, Stanley is my favorite
character because he tries to make friends with most
of the people he meets. For example, with Zero and
the rest of his campmates.
