2 INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
The davit needs to be positioned in an area with adequate space to ensure
safe. Ensure the operator can manually use the winch and slew the davit
through the entire range of movement. Check the davit arm and winch mount
will not contact any part of the vessel or other structure through the desired
movement range. Also check the load clears all parts of the vessel and other
structure through the operating procedure including guard rails, bulwark and
the side of the vessel.

2.01 SOCKET FOUNDATION

The davit socket is subject to considerable load during operation (see deck
foundation loads) so must connect directly to a solid structure. The supplied
socket is to act as a liner and not to be relied on structurally. The socket
should be installed such that the bearing loads are transferred directly into the
ships structure and the socket itself does not experience any bending stress.
The top and bottom 100mm of the socket is to be fully reinforced and
structurally connected to solid foundations in the vessel as a minimum. The
installation must withstand the safety factor loads stated below. It is the
Owner’s responsibility to ensure that the structure is fit for purpose and meets
recognized standards associated with this installation. Atlas Carbon Products
takes no responsibility for socket installation.
NOTE: For Stainless Steel and Aluminium installation it is imperative that
there is no distortion from the welding and the socket remains
cylindrical. The interface between the socket and davit bearings works to
a high tolerance, weld distortion can cause the davit not to fit.
If in doubt, seek technical advice from a Structural Engineer or Naval
Architect.

2.02 PROOF TESTING

After installation, the socket is to be proof tested using a load of 2.2xSWL
unless otherwise stated by class.
The load is to be applied gradually and under control. Precautions are to be
taken to ensure that the vessel will not move abruptly when the davit is under
proof load. All personnel must stay well clear during the initial tests.
Measure structural deflections around the foundation while the davit is
operated throughout its entire working range and compare these with the
calculated values.

2.03 ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

The electrical components are to be installed in line with the winch
requirements and electrical schematic drawing provided by a certified
electrical engineer.

3 PREPARING THE DAVIT FOR USE
Atlas Davits are constructed from carbon fibre which is an inherently
delicate material. The other components of the davit are also fragile. The
davit must be treated with care and must not be dropped, impacted,
abraded, punctured or cut in any way. Any damage to the davit can lead
to failure.
The following instructions outline a general procedure to prepare and check
the davit for each use.
• Remove the deck cap if supplied
• Check the deck socket for debris. Remove any grit or dirt from within
the socket as this may cause damage to the bearings and prevent
easy operation.
• Check the roller bearings (if included) are running smoothly and are
clean / free from debris. Use of the davits when bearing is not running
smoothly will cause damage to bearings / socket.
• The davit body is best manoeuvred with a person on either side with a
hand underneath the shoulder and the winch.
• Place the lower part of the davit into the socket ensuring that it is fully
seated. When fully seated, the top of the upper bearing will be flush
with the top of the deck socket.
• Under no circumstances is the davit be used if it is not correctly seated.
• Slide the upper section onto the lower section, ensuring the ropes are
aligned correctly and the two parts touch at the joining point.
• When erected, rotate the davit to check that it can be easily slewed. If
more than minimum effort is necessary, check the bearings and
socket for distortion or wear. Rectify the problem before proceeding.
• Check that the tackle is correctly rigged and free running. Reeve the
pulley with the correct number of parts as given in section 1.02, and
ensure that all components are securely attached. Rigging the pulley
for a different purchase will change the loads on specific components
and may cause failure.
• Operate the clutch, if fitted and inspect its parts for damage or wear.
• Feed the rope through the clutch and associated lead blocks. Ensure
full functionality of the blocks and winch.
• Plug in the power cable and check the winch is operational by briefly
pressing the up button.
• Provided there are no problems as outlined in the above procedures,
the davit will now be ready for operation. Should any damage or wear
be apparent, then do not use the unit until repairs are made and it is
deemed safe for use.

4 OPERATING THE DAVIT
The davit is fitted with a clutch. This is not to be used as a breaking device
when lowering a load. Its purpose is to hold the load should the rope slip on
the drum. If the clutch is engaged while the load is being lowered, there will be
increased loading due to dynamics of the operation, which will damage the
clutch and render it ineffective.
The operator should stand behind the davit during use. Take care not to get
items of clothing, hair and jewellery entangled in the winch, or other moving
parts. The davit should not be operated when any other personnel are near
and must only be operated within the operating limits. The davit must not lift
more than the stated safe working load or be used at an angle greater
than 10º.

4.01 USING THE WINCH

4.01.01 Harken Winch

Wrap the rope around the drum of the winch at least 4 times in a clockwise
direction. Then engage in the self-tailor jammer. The winch can then be
operated manually by engaging the handle in the top and rotating or by
pressing the up button on the handset depending on model.
To feed out the load remove the rope from the self-tailor and slowly feed the
rope around the 4 turns still on the drum or simply press the down button on if
a rewind winch is used.

4.01.02 Quick DP2E Winch

Thread the rope clockwise around the Gypsy and down through the conduit
through the winch mount. Ensure rope is engaged in the jaws of the Gypsy.
The winch can then be operated manually by engaging the handle in the top
and rotating or by pressing the up button on the handset to lift the load. The
load can be lowered by pressing the down button.

4.02 USING THE CLUTCH
Open the handle fully forward to the thread line through the clutch. With the
handle closed, the clutch will hold the rope automatically as the load is eased
from the winch. (Allow for a forward rope movement of up to 20mm as the cam
engages). Gripping performance on new rope will improve with use.
To Release: XTR clutches have a two-stage release action. For the first stage
you feel no load on the handle. The second stage releases the line. The clutch
is spring-loaded and requires to be held open by one hand while withdrawing
the rope using the other hand. Note some clutches may be supplied not spring
loaded.

CLOSED OPEN HELD OPEN

4.03 TO LIFT A LOAD

WARNING
If the davit is not on a level platform or the platform is in motion, the
davit may slew involuntarily after the load has been lifted clear of its
resting place. In this situation it will be necessary to use guy ropes to
prevent the davit from slewing out of control. It is the operator’s
responsibility to assess the conditions and use good judgement to
ensure safe handling of the davit and the load.
Attach guy lines to control/prevent boom rotation as necessary. These should
be attached to the fabricated stainless-steel shackle located at the davit head.
Rotate the davit to position the boom over the load ensuring that the lifting
angle is less than 10º off vertical in any plane.
Take the rope off the drum.
Open the clutch and draw through the slack rope by hand or using the painter
line supplied.
Note: The Rewind Winch will only lower under load, it cannot pay out the line
with no load attached.
Attach the strops or lifting eye to the hook and ensure that the safety tongue is
engaged.
Haul in the slack rope by hand.
If the load is to be left suspended for any period of time, guy the boom to
prevent the davit from rotating. If the load is suspended with a long fall, lash or
guy it to prevent it from swinging.
Tighten the guys and tie them off to a strong point such as a mooring bollard
or cleat.
Load the rope onto the winch as described in section 4.01.

Lift the load by winding in the winch making sure to stand well clear of the
moving parts.
Adjust the guy lines as the load is being lifted thus relieving unnecessary
tension.

4.04 TO SLEW A LOAD

4.04.01 Level Platform – No Guys Attached

Ensure the clutch is locked closed and the rope on the winch is securely
fastened in the self-tailor. DO NOT REMOVE THE ROPE FROM THE SELF-
TAILOR OR OPEN THE CLUTCH!
With the load suspended, move to the side of the davit and push the boom in
the direction the load is to be moved.
The force needed to start rotation will be greater than that necessary to keep it
in motion. Use extreme care during this particular operation, especially if the
platform is unsteady or not level.
Slowly rotate the davit to the position where the load is to be lowered.
Either lower the load as per 4.05 below, or guy off the boom if the load is to be
left suspended for any period of time.
Do not leave a suspended load unattended.

4.04.02 Sloping Platform – Guys Attached

If the load is being moved in the direction of voluntary rotation, slacken the
working guy and slowly pay out line so that the boom rotates under its own
effort. After finishing the slewing operation, take up the slack in the lazy guy
and tie off securely.
If the load is being moved against the direction of voluntary rotation, haul in
the working guy while paying out the lazy one. At the end of operation ensure
that the lines are tied off securely.
THE DAVIT IS NOT TO BE USED IF THE PLATFORM IS MORE THAN 10
FROM HORIZONTAL.

4.05 TO LOWER A LOAD

NEVER FLICK OPEN THE CLUTCH WHEN IT IS UNDER LOAD – TO DO
SO WILL DAMAGE THE INTERNAL PARTS AND MAY CAUSE INJURY –
FIRST CHECK TO ENSURE THAT THE LOAD IS BEING HELD BY THE
WINCH.
Take care to make sure that rope coils do not become entangled in limbs
during the lowering operation.
If the rope between the winch and the safety clutch is slack, then take up the
excess using the winch. Make sure that all the load is off the clutch.

4.05.01 Using a manual or Unipower winch

Remove the rope from the self-tailing jaws, but keep a minimum of four turns
on the drum.
Hold the rope with one hand and open the clutch to disengage the cam with
the other.

Pay out the rope so that it slips around drum, play the friction to prevent
uncontrollable descent. When lowering is to be stopped pull the rope tight onto
the drum.
If the load is to be part lowered only, the strain is to be held on the winch and
not just the safety clutch. Ensure the rope is fully secured in the self-tailing
jaws and the clutch is closed.

4.05.02 Using a Rewind or Quick DP2E Winch

To lower the load simply press the down button on the controller leaving the
rope fully engaged in the self-tailor.

5 MAINTENANCE & TESTING

The davit requires to be maintained to a high standard to ensure that it
remains fit for purpose.
It is the Owner’s responsibility to ensure that:
• an adequate inspection and maintenance program is in operation
• the davit and all its components are kept in good working order
• the davit is not used outside its stated operational limits.
Do not use the davit unless it is certain that the load weighs less than the SWL
of the Davit.

5.01 TESTING
All components are to be checked for wear and damage prior to load testing.
The davit is to be tested at regular periods and in accordance with current
legislation by an appropriate establishment. An annual load test should be
undertaken to ensure that the davit and its deck foundation are in good
condition. The annual load test is to be conducted as outlined in the Atlas
Davit Testing Guide.

5.02 MAINTENANCE
The following guidance is provided for maintenance and inspection. If you are
unsure about any of the following details, contact the manufacturer.
Clear-coated davits are not to be exposed to extreme temperatures or direct
sunlight for extended periods.
All parts of davit should be rinsed in fresh water regularly, In particular the
blocks, sheaves, clutch, rope rollers, bearings and the winch.

5.02.01 Clutch
Check that the clutch is securely attached to the boom and is in good working
order before each use of the davit.
The clutch acts as a safety device; never use the davit if the clutch is
damaged. Replace damaged parts immediately.
Flush regularly using fresh water and apply a silicone spray or grease to the
required parts when dry. Ensure that lubricants do not contaminate ropes.
Do not use mineral oil or solvent-based lubricants like “WD40”, solvent based
cleaners or polysulphide-based sealants. These products will degrade the
materials and weaken the moulded composite components, which can cause

sudden structural failure. They also degrade the bearing properties of
composite bushes.
Do not modify any part of the clutch.

5.02.02 Rope
Storage
Ropes should be stored clean, dry, out of direct sunlight and away from
extremes of temperature. Never store rope on concrete or dirty floors or drag it
over rough ground - dirt and grit picked up by the rope can work into the
strands and cut fibres from within. Keep away from chemicals of all types.
Rope Inspection
In use, rope should be inspected regularly for evidence of kinking, external
wear, major cuts or chafe, chemical attack and surface abrasion. Check
splices for evidence of movement. If a hockle is present in the rope, reject it.
Salt crystals can affect the life and efficiency of ropes - it is recommended that
at the end of a season or voyage that the ropes should be hosed down with
fresh water.
Retiring ropes
Apart from discarding your rope when obviously damaged, it is wise to
establish lifetimes for your rope in accordance with its operational use.
This will allow rope retirement on a regularly scheduled basis provided
conditions of usage remain unchanged.
Check the rope for signs of wear or fraying on a regular basis. Damaged ropes
are to be replaced immediately. If the davit has a high duty factor, then the
rope will require replacing at more frequent intervals.
Additional information on ropes can be found in MCA Publication MGN
106(M+F).
When replacing the rope use a single piece only. Knots weaken ropes and are
prohibited. One end of the rope is to be spliced into an eye for fitting over the
fabricated stainless-steel shackle.
When a rope is used on a winch, care should be exercised to avoid surging
while the drum is rotating. Excessive surging or slippage causes localised
over-heating, which can melt or fuse synthetic fibres with resulting loss of
strength. A risk of deterioration occurs if a rope remains in the same working
or bearing position over long periods of use. It can be reversed one end to the
other, to spread the wear, or if long enough, can be periodically moved to a
new bearing position. The 'furry' look of a well-used synthetic rope is not
necessarily an indication of weakness; in fact the hairy surface serves to
protect the rope.
Retest the davit before use.

5.02.03 Sheave, Pulley Blocks and Hook

Pulleys must be free to rotate properly and should not be used if they have
sharp edges, rough surfaces, or flat spots on the sheave.
Before using, replace damaged parts.
Check to ensure that shackle pins are screwed home fully and seize them if
necessary.

5.02.04 Winch
Refer to the manufacturer’s manual for maintenance and repair details.

5.02.05 Bearings
Each time the davit is used check that the bearings are free of debris and
running smoothly. The davit is not to be used if there is any damage to the
bearings as this can cause structural damage to the davit and socket. For
roller bearings, lightly lubricate the bearings and needles with a dry spray
lubricant after every 5 uses of the davit.

5.02.06 Electrical Troubleshooting

If the electric winch is not working once the power supply is connected. The
circuit breaker may have activated, or the inline fuse blown. Open the access
hatch on the winch mount to reveal the circuit breaker and fuse. The circuit
breaker can simply be flicked back on. Alternatively, the fuse can be replaced
with a fuse of the same ampage by an appropriately qualified individual.
6 REMOVABLE ARM

To locate the removable arm. Hold at both head and adjoining end and
slide together. Engage locking pin if supplied.
ENSURE THE TWO PARTS TOUCH AT THE JOINING POINT.
