Importance of Geology in Civil Engineering

What I am going to present to everyone here is the 8th item of the following: the importance
of geology in civil engineering.

2. Pre-geological survey of the area concerned reduces the cost of the planning work.

To further understand this point we will first find out what is a pre-geological survey.

3. Pre-geological survey is the process of determining the layers of natural soil deposits that will
underlie a proposed structure and their physical properties. The primary information gathered
concerns the study of rocks, their location, and the deformation and examination of the
sedimentary layers.

Geological survey is an important engineering discipline because this determines whether the
site is suitable for the project at hand or not. Failure to identify if the project hand is suitable
for the location will result in problems. This just shows how conducting a geological survey is
crucial in the process and success of the project.

4. Why is pre-geological survey cost effective?

First of all, the gathered geological information of the site for a project is relevant in the planning,
design and construction of an engineering project. Conducting a geological survey of the
concerned area will provide primary understanding of the structure, characteristics, soil
properties and composition of the site. It supplies early identification of the potential risks and
will allow it to be managed effectively. Determines whether the site is suitable for the given
project.

With the data and information about the geology of the area of a project site are collected, a
feasible plan, design and construction will be produced, making it cost-effective.

To conclude this presentation, geology has a significant influence in the feasibility, planning,
construction and ensures a stable model of an engineering project. Conducting a geological
survey of a site before starting a project reduces the overall cost.
