The magnetic sample cover should be used, if the sample contains volatile substance, which could easily evaporate.
The magnetic force assures an equal and sufficient pressure to the O-ring, which seals the measuring area to avoid
evaporation of volatile matter.

the prism, even if the sample is flexible.

4.3 Micro Flow Cell

Micro flow cells are used for the measurement of liquids. They can either be filled manually by using a syringe or
automatically, e.g. by an automated sampler or pump. They are often used in the Modulyzer, in combination with a
density meter or viscosity meter. They require only a small sample volume for a measurement and reduce the human
contact with aggressive or toxic chemicals. They are sealed by an O-ring against the measuring prism and thus allow
measurement of samples, which might be aggressive against the sample well material.

4.4 Flow cell

Flow cells are used for measurements of liquids, e.g. in bypass installations in a laboratory. The flow cell can be
automatically filled by a suitable pump. The next sample will replace the previous one, so that no manual cleaning
of the measuring prism is required in between.

4.5 Flow cell with filling funnel

Convenient routine analysis of low viscosity liquids, e.g. beverages. The sample poured into the filling funnel is
completely replacing the previous one allowing a quick exchange of sample without prism cleaning in between.

The microliter adapter is used for measurement of very small sample volumes down to 7 µl. The sample is filled into
the funnel shaped cone and will be centered on the measuring prism, where the measurement takes place.

4.7 Flow cell with temperature control to sample inlet temperature
Abbemat 450/650
This flow cell allows measurement of temperature sensitive samples in a flow without changing the sample
temperature during the measurement. The sample temperature is measured at the cell inlet. The measuring area is
immediately controlled to this sample inlet temperature assuring a measurement of the sample without sample
temperature change during the measurement.

4.8 Built-in Peristaltic Pump

Abbemat 350/550
The Abbemat 350/550 can be equipped with an optional peristaltic pump

for convenient filling of flow cells.
Two types of pump cassettes with different hose material are available,
either Fluran or Novoprene. The peristaltic pump comes with the tubings
according to your order. Check the resistance of the tubings against your
samples and the rinsing agents.

4.9 pH module and accessories

Abbemat 350/550
pH measurement is performed with commercially available pH

electrodes. The choice of the pH electrode is up to you, in any
case, the electrode has to have a diameter of 12 mm to fit into the
protective tube of pH ME for Abbemat.

4.11 Autosampler Xsample 520

Abbemat 350/550
User-independent first-class filling of numerous Anton Paar master

instruments is ensured by stepless adjustability in combination with
a smart pump lock. With a simple snap the pump is adjusted and
ready for operation. Xsample 520 automatically handles up to 96
samples, so unattended filling and measurement are possible even
during the night and weekends. Freeing operators for higher
qualified tasks increase the productivity in the lab. The
maintenance-free peristaltic pump with a flexible filling speed
enables optimized sample treatment for perfect measuring results .
The autosampler Xsample 520 and accessories have to be ordered

from the Anton Paar GmbH headquarter in Austria, directly.
For operation with an Abbemat 350/550 a separate housing for the Xsample 520 is required. Two housing options
are offered:
1. Xsample ME housing to be ordered from Anton Paar OptoTec GmbH in Germany (see below)
2. or the docking station (mat. No. 219027) to be ordered from Anton Paar GmbH headquarter in Austria.

Abbemat T-Check is for precise calibration and adjustment of the Abbemat

measuring prism surface temperature.
An MKT 50 Millikelvin thermometer with certified PT100 temperature sensor

4.13.3 Abbemat Desktop Software
Abbemat 350/550 Abbemat 450/650
With this software you can operate the Abbemat refractometers via an
external computer and store raw data straight on the PC.
The desktop software is linked to a particular instrument via its serial
number and PCB board number. You need an authorization code to
unlock the desktop software functionality on the particular Abbemat.

4.13.4 Ordering information:
4.13.4.1 Purchase of new instrument and Desktop Software

You need to enter the position number within the purchase order for which the Desktop Software should be used
(just in case more than one instrument is within the order).

4.13.4.2 Purchase of software for an existing Abbemat

You need to enter the corresponding PCB board and serial number in the context of the Desktop Software position
within the purchase order. The PCB board number can be found at Menu > Service > System Information:
Important note: If the PCB Board number is not displayed,
kindly send the log file from the corresponding instrument.
The context of the Desktop Software ordering text will ask for the corresponding information. If not entered,
this will cause delay in the order processing and additional clarification steps, which should be omitted.
4.13.5 Anton Paar Connect Software

AP Connect is a software solution for connecting laboratory instruments and

ensuring an error-free data flow from the instrument to a defined storage location
(e.g. data management system). Due to the central database, the data can be
checked at any time and all information is available in the entire company
network (multi-client architecture).
AP Connect is available in three editions (one free and two paid) and has to be ordered
from Anton Paar LPS.

5 Abbemat MW Accessoires
These accessories are also suitable for the discontinued Abbemat HP/WR/WR-HT/RXA 156/170 models.
5.1 Optional measuring wavelengths (Abbemat MW only)

Abbemat MW
The Abbemat MW is equipped with the standard wavelength of 589 nm. Up to 7 further wavelengths (interference
filters) can be installed to the Abbemat. The additional wavelengths have to be installed in the factory. Therefore,
they should be ordered together with the instrument. A later update would be possible but at high initial costs and
therefore is not recommended.
Note:
The mentioned wavelengths are nominal wavelength, the true wavelengths may differ due to the production
tolerances of the supplier. However, the Abbemat MW will indicate and use the true wavelengths.

5.3 Sample Presser for Abbemat MW

Abbemat MW
The sample presser can be used for solid samples, e.g. plastic
films, contact lenses, etc. It ensures a coplanar orientation of the
sample on the prism, even if the sample is flexible.

5.4 Sample cover for Abbemat MW

Abbemat MW
This sample cover could be used if a sample should be measured “in between” and the installed accessory, e.g. a
flow cell, should not be dismantled from the cell holder. Just flap the cell holder back to use the sample cover. This
sample cover operates as a light shader to avoid that ambient light is entering the optical system and has no O-ring.
