PART 1: PUNCTUATION
THE OBJECTIVES OF PART 1: (1 slide rieng)
 Use punctuation (full stop and comma) and capital letters where necessary.
 Put words in the correct order to make a sentence.
 Put sentences in the correct order to form a paragraph.
COMMA (1 slide rieng)
Look at the these sentences and state if the commas are put in CORRECT or INCORRECT
places:

them.
 The comma (,) before AND in a list of three or more items is optional.

 Use comma (,) after INTRODUCTORY WORDS (however, still, furthermore, to
begin with, meanwhile, by contrast, according to, first, second, etc.)
FULL STOP and CAPITAL LETTERS (1 slide rieng)
Eg:
1. We went to France last summer. We were really surprised that it was so easy to travel on
the motorways.

2. The Football World Cup takes place every four years. The next World Cup will be held
in South Africa.

When do we use a FULL STOPS (.) and CAPITAL LETTERS in a sentence?


 We use capital letters to mark the beginning of a sentence.
 We use full stops to mark the end of a sentence.
 We use capital letters at the beginning of proper nouns.
PRACTICE:
Part A: A Rewrite the article, using punctuation and capital letters where necessary:

USEFUL LANGUAGE:
1. The topic sentences of the report:
 The graph/ chart/ diagram/ table/ slide shows/ illustrates/ describes + a Noun/ a
Noun phrase
Eg: The chart describes the percentage of Asian leaders suffering from stress at
the workplace.
 As you can see from this graph/ chart/ slide/ diagram/ table + Clause (S + V)

USEFUL LANGUAGE:
Instead of writing “I am sorry”, we should use the following expressions:
1. Please accept my deepest apologies for…
2. Please accept my sincere apologies for…
3. Please accept this as my formal apology for…
4. Please allow me to apologize for…
Eg: Please accept my sincere apologies for not sending you the report on time.
*Note: you should not use contraction.
Eg: I can’t I cannot

PART 3: EDITING

Reducing stress is in the interest of both employers and employees. First of all, less stress mean
more productivity because, as everybody knows, the results of stress are often illness and absent
from work. Every year, millions of days of work is lost because of stress and stress-related
illness.

As regards employees, on the other hand, a lower level of stress leading not only to increased job
satisfaction but also to best relationships at work and at home. Of course, it also contributes a
great deal to a generally feeling of happiness.
