The Legend of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo

Legend:
HILDER: According to this legend, when the Earth was full of plants and animals, Inti, the Sun
God decided that something was missing. For this reason, he had a son named Manco Capac or
Ayar Manco, and a daughter Mama Ocllo, whom he gave as a wife. Both left the waters of Lake
Titicaca to fulfill the mission of founding the empire of the Incas.

ANGEL: The Sun God, gave Manco Capac a golden rod, with the indication that the place
where the staff sank, would found the Inca empire, which would be the center of the world.

HILDER: Thus, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo began a journey more than 3,000 meters above
sea level, heading for the unknown, but in search of the promised land. Upon reaching certain
regions, the locals mistook them for gods due to the brilliance of their clothing and jewelry.

ANGEL: For several months they traveled the highlands until they reached a fertile and
majestic valley with abundant vegetation and imposing mountains. That was the place where
the goldenrod sank easily into the ground. Thus, he established the place of the empire and
the foundation of the city of Cusco, the navel of the world. To the residents of the nearby
areas, Manco Capac taught them to hunt, sow, build aqueducts, raise cattle, live in society and
worship the god Inti to civilize them, while Mama Ocllo dedicated herself to teaching women
textile techniques and to do household activities.
