School counseling and students with disabilities

Introduction

School counseling plays a crucial role in supporting students with disabilities in their educational

journey. Students with disabilities often face unique challenges that can impact their learning and

overall well-being.

Disabilities are diverse and multifaceted conditions that can affect individuals in various ways,

including physical, sensory, cognitive, and developmental aspects. These conditions can be

present from birth or acquired later in life due to illness, injury, or other factors. Disabilities can

impact a person's mobility, communication, learning, and overall quality of life. Understanding

disabilities is crucial for fostering inclusivity, promoting equal opportunities, and providing

appropriate support and accommodations to individuals facing these challenges.

Background

For my project, I had the opportunity to meet a young girl who has a learning disability. Initially,

she felt shy and lacked confidence, but through my gentle and supportive approach, she

gradually opened up and shared her daily struggles, problems, and issues related to her learning

disability. This assignment aims to shed light on her experiences and provide insights into the

challenges faced by students with learning disabilities in their daily routines. The young girl, let's

call her Ayat Karim, is a student with a learning disability. Her learning disability affects her

ability to process information, understand written material, and organize her thoughts effectively.

As a result, she faces numerous challenges that impact her academic progress, social interactions,

and overall well-being.

Here are some problems and issues which I tried to find it.

Academic Challenges: Ayat Karim highlighted the difficulties she encounters in various

academic areas. Reading comprehension poses a significant challenge for her, as she often

struggles to grasp the main ideas and details of the text. Additionally, writing assignments

become overwhelming due to her difficulties in organizing her thoughts and expressing herself

coherently.

Low Self-Confidence: Ayat Karim shared her feelings of self-doubt and low self-esteem as a

result of her learning disability. She often compares herself to her peers, which further

diminishes her confidence. The fear of making mistakes and feeling inadequate in academic

settings hinders her ability to actively participate and share her thoughts.

Social Isolation: Ayat Karim mentioned feeling isolated and left out in social settings. Her

learning disability impacts her ability to keep up with conversations, follow complex

instructions, and understand nonverbal cues. Consequently, she finds it challenging to form

meaningful connections with her classmates and experiences a sense of loneliness.

Time Management and Organization: Ayat Karim struggles with managing her time and

staying organized. The executive functioning skills required for planning, prioritizing tasks, and

meeting deadlines pose significant difficulties for her. This can lead to increased stress levels and

a sense of being overwhelmed.

Reading and Writing Challenges: Emily may struggle with reading comprehension, decoding

words, and understanding written instructions. Writing tasks may be particularly challenging for

her, as she may have difficulty organizing her thoughts coherently and expressing her effectively

in writing.
Attention and Focus Issues: Students with disabilities, like Emily, may struggle with

attention and focus difficulties. They may find it hard to concentrate for extended periods, which

can impact their ability to follow instructions, complete assignments, and participate actively in

class discussions.

Social and Emotional Concerns: Learning disabilities can impact a student's self-esteem and

social interactions. Emily may feel frustrated, anxious, or inadequate due to her learning

challenges, which can affect her overall well-being and confidence. She may also face

difficulties in forming friendships or experiencing a sense of belonging within the school

community.

Conclusion:

Ayat Karim’s story provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by students with learning

disabilities in their daily routines. From academic struggles to low self-confidence, social

isolation, time management issues, and inadequate access to accommodations, these students

face a range of obstacles that impact their educational experiences and overall well-being. It is

essential for educators, school counselors, and the community at large to recognize these

challenges and work collaboratively to create inclusive learning environments that support the

needs of students with learning disabilities. By providing the necessary accommodations,

fostering a supportive atmosphere, and promoting self-advocacy skills, we can help students like

Ayat Karim overcome their difficulties and reach their full potential.
