It’s great to see that the show car scene is slowly
but surely moving away from the all show and no go
movement! In fact, more than ever before it seems the
popularity of cars that offer both show and go is on the
up and this issue is a great reflection of that.
Chris Roberts’ stunning Mk7.5 on cover is the perfect
example of a nicely balanced new wave car that offers
the best of both worlds… it’s just as at home on the
show field as it would be on a track day or the daily
commute. Canadian, Mike Lovas’ 1.8T Rabbit (p62) is a
great example of how you can fully restore a classic VW
and retain all the elements that made it a great car in
the first place, while gaining some serious performance
by fitting a later, more modern force-induced motor.
Okay, so Mike Pauciullo’s 1000whp Mk4 1.8T (that he
claims is still street legal), may be a bit extreme for
most but then things would be boring without people
pushing the boundries and us documenting it for you!

I
t might seem hard to believe, but at the
time of shooting, this comprehensively
modified White silver Golf R stunner
here was less than six weeks old
– undoubtedly making it one of the
freshest cars to ever receive a cover
feature in this fine publication.
The reasons behind this alarmingly quick
transformation go far beyond the owner simply
preferring to get things done in a hurry, too
– instead signifying a tale of huge setbacks and
the fact that sometimes, it really is best just to get
back on with life rather than dwelling on the past.
If it wasn’t for the encouragement of friends
and family though, this whole thing could easily
have never happened. Put yourself in carpenter
owner Chris’ shoes for a moment as we run
through the last few years of his life: a serial VW
nut, he was finally able to switch up from his 1.4
Mk6 TSI to the pinnacle Golf in the range – the
4WD Mk7 R – a couple of years ago. Sinking
his heart and soul into the black car’s famously
tuneable drivetrain and eventually ramping things
up to an APR Stage 2 state of tune that equated
to around 410bhp of fun, things really couldn’t
have been any better as he pondered about
which modifications to perform next with his
long-term love affair.
Golf R ownership was clearly going
swimmingly, then. Until, that is, the summer
of 2017, when everything was abruptly turned
on its head… “Following a major accident, the
car was declared a write-off,” Chris tragically
explains. “As a proper petrolhead, it was literally
heart-breaking.” Clearly a massive blow after all
the hard work that’d been poured into his pride
and joy, there was a moment where it looked
like that could be it for Chris and his love for
modified VWs altogether.
“It took a lot of persuasion from my close
friends and my other half to get me back behind
the wheel of my dream car once more,” Chris
continues, explaining how a couple of months
down the line, he was finally ready to snap up

another R and continue his journey where he’d
left off. Deciding to go bigger and better from
the word go this time, a brand-new Mk7.5 with
the recently-launched Performance Pack list
of upgrades was spec’d up from scratch in a
sumptuous White silver hue, with Chris keen to
signify his return to the scene by creating an
example that no one would be forgetting in a
hurry or mistake for his last car.
“Things have moved so quickly because I
already knew exactly what I wanted to do to
the car and am lucky enough to have a very
helpful group of mates around,” Chris continues,
revealing that many of the upgraded parts that
now feature on the car were lying around waiting
in his house in the build-up time for the Golf
getting delivered to him, including the carbon
fibre bonnet (which sat patiently under his bed
for a month) until he got the new car.
Planning on keeping the three-door for the
foreseeable future, the initial intentions revolved
around an ongoing project that would focus
on both driver thrills and also sharpening up
the hatchback’s already suave looks. And
considering the tiny window of opportunity he’s
so far had the car in his ownership for, we think
he’s done a pretty impressive job of reaching his
goals already...
First putting the spotlight on the visual
aesthetics, that aforementioned vented carbon
fibre bonnet (painstakingly re-sprayed to perfectly
match the car’s bodywork) adds plenty of front-
end drama into the mix with its bulging centre
section and exposed carbon vent work. It’s set
off with a Maxton Designs splitter which offers up
a subtle aero look underneath the already gaping
front bumper.
The contrasting gloss black Maxton Designs
additions continue around the car in the form of
side skirt extensions and the understated rear
diffuser – balancing a fine line between striking
aggression while retaining some of the machine’s

factory classiness. Chris’ carbon fibre addiction
that started off with the bonnet can also be
witnessed with the wing mirror caps and that
three-piece adjustable spoiler that replaces the
car’s standard roof-mounted offering – giving
off all sorts of retro JDM vibes when set at its
maximum angle of attack.
It’d only taken a couple of weeks, but Chris
was eventually content that he’d begun to make
his mark on the car’s appearance enough to
focus on some other areas that were also set
to receive plenty of attention. Not least that TSI
lump up front; another aspect of the build that
had a stack of bolt-on bits waiting patiently in
his garage to be added on the moment the car
arrived on his driveway.
Currently revolving mainly around air flow,
the boosted motor has received one of Forge
Motorsport’s finest air intake kits – a hefty
chunk of premium carbon fibre which does
wonders in improving the bay’s appearance
(Chris has personally lacquered his particular

example to give it that sheen that matches the
rest of the carbon fibre bits found elsewhere)
and supplying a larger volume of cooler air to
that IS38 turbocharger. Then there’s that trick
AWE exhaust system – a valved unit that can be
controlled using an onboard remote control and
featuring tasty polished tailpipes out back. “It’s a
brilliant exhaust… it’s nice to be able to control
the volume of the car depending what mood I’m
in at the time,” Chris grins.
While the Golf’s yet to be strapped onto a
rolling road (we’ll cut Chris some slack here
considering just how short a time he’s had with
the car), there’s plenty of scope to squeeze a
whole lot more ponies from this package now
there are some pretty comprehensive hardware
enhancements in place. “I’m going to be having
chats about power increases soon, I’m hoping to
pull some big figures out of it over the next few
months,” he reveals, hinting that a larger turbo
might eventually be in the pipeline once he’s
ready for it.

Clear from the outset that his latest acquisition
would sway more towards the ‘weekend toy’
category rather than the ‘shiny show car’ camp,
it’s little surprise to hear there’s also been a
raft of chassis tweaks performed to match the
work carried out on that fiery motor to create a
truly rewarding all-round package. It’s why you’ll
now find RacingLine springs adorning the DCC
suspension system, as well as both front and
rear bracing to ensure those sticky Pirelli tyres

are working to no less than optimal performance
at all times. “It drives like it’s glued to the road…
all of the handling mods seem to work amazingly
together,” he’s happy to report.
Chris gets to experience the car’s improved
capabilities from a rather pleasant cockpit, too.
Spec’d up to the eyeballs from the factory with
the likes of Dynaudio sound system and Nav
Pro, he’s added to the fast-road credentials
found elsewhere by performing a custom rear
seat removal that’s been executed with the
refinement to match that of a Clubsport S, as
well as what he admits is one of his favourite
upgrades so far – a fully bespoke carbon fibre-
based steering wheel whipped up by the guys
at Custom Control Steering Wheel featuring
body-colour stitching and some seriously grippy
leather side pads.
Considering this overwhelmingly impressive
amount of work has all been performed in such
a small timeframe, we’re struggling to imagine
just how epic Chris’ Golf is going to look a few
months down the line from now. “In short, I’ll be
doing lots!” he laughs as we ask him what the
future holds, already hinting that he’s snapped
up some bucket seats since our shoot for him
to finish off that functional interior. Seeing our
proud owner here getting such a kick from his
new venture after recently suffering a pretty
awful setback, Chris’ story serves as a reminder
that whatever curveballs life throws at us,
it’s always best to get back up with all guns
blazing… n

When ECS Tuning reached out to our own Jamie
Orr (Instagram.com/xjamiexoe) about testing
their Street Shield Skid Plate, they probably
didn't expect he was going to take it this far.
Jamie tracked down a former VW show car,
and is going to take on a 8,000+ mile journey
across the USA and Canada, to test the skid
plate and the car on the Dalton Highway in the
Arctic Circle… all in only 14 days.
The car will be modified en route, with stops
at Black Forest Industries, APR, KW Suspensions
and more. By the time it reaches the gravel
roads in the Arctic, we're expecting lots of lows,
bigger wheels, upgraded engine mounts, and

This rather lovely looking thing is Pipercross’
new V1 intake for the Mk7 GTI and R. Developed
in conjunction with Arma Speed, a firm well
versed in carbon fibre product development, it’s
constructed completely from carbon fibre so it’s
light, it’s strong and it’s resistant to suffering from
heat soak, too. Oh, and it obviously looks the
nuts too. Being a Pipercross product, it doesn’t
just look the part of course, with expert design
and one of Pipercross’ own filters it does exactly
what it says on the tin and improves power and
torque too – as well as give the TSI a nice little
boost in the soundtrack department as well.

VW always uses Worthersee to debut a new concept,
and this year the hottest property on the giant VW
stand was this, the Golf GTI TCR concept. The headline
grabber is that the 2.0-litre lump has been tuned up to
290PS and 370Nm, still only driving the front wheels,
and a locking differential has been slotted into the
gearbox to help it put the increased power down. Other
than that there’s a few styling tweaks including a new rear diffuser and new wheels and a
rather nice Flash red interior trim job. While only a concept for now, VW are set to put the
special edition in to production by the end of the year.

ENTHUSIASTS FIRST
Volkswagen of America recently unveiled its enthusiast show
concept fleet at The European Experience. This includes
the Golf R Abstact concept which sits on 20” FR Design
wheels, H&R springs and features loads of ABT Sportsline
goodies and a jazzy wrap inspired by Wynwood Art District in
Miami, where the North American office of ABT Sportsline is
located. Developed in conjunction with Fifteen52, the Jetta
R-Line SoCal concept features decals inspired by those on
the Mk2 Jetta, colour-coded Formula GT wheels and ST XTA
coilovers. The Tiguan R-Line Aero concept sits on Air Lift with
3H management, a set of Rotiform CCV wheels and sports a
Thule roof box and a pretty out-there wrap. The Arteon R-Line
Highlight concept is very, very yellow, sits on Vossen Hybrid
Forged HF-2 wheels and a set of H&R Ultra Low coils. Finally,
there’s the Atlas Tanner Foust SEMA concept which has been
lifted and sports all kinds of off-roady goodness and a GTI-style
plaid interior. We love how VWOA embraces the aftermarket

We fell in love with Early Edition’s new venue last year and so
couldn’t wait to head up to Northampton and sample 2018’s
offering, especially as the sun came out to play.

W
hat can we say that hasn’t
already been said about
the Edition 38 events? The
guys have been doing this
show malarkey for so long
now, that they’ve got it all
down to a fine art. This is evident in their first
instalment of the year, Early Edition - which has
grown to become one of the biggest one-day
VW events in the UK. The year before last, the
team decided to make the move away from the
Northampton Saints’ Franklin Gardens in favour
of a new, larger venue at Sywell Aerodrome – just
a stone’s throw away from the site of the main
event at Overstone Park. The new venue has a
lot more scope for expansion, which has allowed
a significantly larger number of cars to enter
the show. As well as this, there is a small on-site
hotel – ideal for those making the longest trips.
Now in its second year at Sywell, the show
continues to attract the very best VAG metal
from all over the UK, we even saw a couple of
Belgian plates which is testament to how highly
the show is regarded. Traditionally the show
has bridged the gap between the Ultimate Dubs
season opener and the rest of the VAG show
season, however a slightly later date this year
meant that the weather on the day couldn’t have
been better, 25 degrees and not a cloud in sight
(cue ridiculous t-shirt tans). This only added to

those selected to be inside the carpeted hanger

the already very relaxed vibe that the organisers
have done well to transfer over from the main
show, held in early September. This was in no
small part down to the DJ, who nailed the music
choice all day long. A host of benches for people
to sit and eat at were dotted around the venue
which ensured that the food traders were busy
all day (Kang-Fu noodles are the nuts, by the
way). If you were lucky, you might have even
found a bench in the shade!
The usual plethora of trade stands were in
attendance with some serious cars on display,
Reflex Auto Design’s custom 997 Porsche,
fresh from its Wörthersee trip, was a particular
highlight on the Meguiar’s stand. Both this and
Kenwood’s Scirocco demo car are proof that
the current livery trend is still going strong in
2018. Another point of interest was Ian from C6
Carbon’s bagged, Quantum Grey Audi Q2, with
all the carbon fibre touches you would expect.
The Q2 is a model that we're sure we will see
more modified examples of soon.
The standard of cars, as always, was
incredibly high – especially those selected to be
inside the carpeted hangar, which really were
the cream of the crop. Although, throughout the
show field the quality, as well as the quantity was
consistently high. It was also refreshing to see a
huge display of Transporters, of which the newer
T5/6 seem to have soared in popularity within the
modifying scene over the last few years. You only
have to take a look at Andi Riley’s RS4 swapped
T5 (which was awarded a Top 20 on the day) to
see the sheer calibre of vans on display.
The van theme didn’t end here though, with
Dan Bray’s phenomenal Caddy R360 winning

WEEKEND He may prefer to roll drab dirty diesels as his daily drives, but when Ross Wishard let’s off
steam on the weekend it’s behind the wheel of this stunning Mk2 Jetta Coupe VRT.
I
n our experience, as a general rule,
master mechanics, skilful sprayers,
adept auto electricians and the like,
almost always seem to drive barely
functional, clapped out eye sores held
together with zip ties and duct-tape, in
most cases questionably legal jalopies that are
one ticket away from the scrap heap.
It’s almost a law of science; the better the
work that rolls out of the forecourt the dodgier
the daily driver parked around the back. Sure
there’s normally a half finished, semi stripped
shell of some description languishing on a lift
in the corner of the shop, a “some day” super
build that’s slowly become a storage shelf for
parts boxes and good intentions. Battered vans

and beat up trucks are the norm for these pros
builders, tow vehicles and parts chasers that
cost nothing and look it.
“I’m normally in an old Jetta wagon,” admitted
Ross Wishard sheepishly, “It’s a Mk4 diesel
with a fair few miles on it.” Despite being an
accomplished auto technician wrestling wrenches
at his family’s long established VW/Audi garage,
and being the driving force behind building the
spectacularly stunning silver coupe gracing
these pages, the Pennsylvania master mechanic
confesses that his daily conveyances are
decidedly yawn worthy. “As I get older I guess
I’m just falling away from modifying my daily
drivers, it’s been all old diesel beaters for the
last few years.” Ross reckons it’s been a slow
progression over the last twenty or so years,
the project cars coming on in detail, complexity
and coolness while the daily transport has been
heading in the other direction toward blandville.
“I bought my first Volkswagen when I was fifteen
years old,” he told us, “It was a 1981 Caddy
that I still own today. I bought it with a blown
engine and the body work was also a little rough.
I didn’t have the time or money to do an engine
replacement and paint job,” he continued, “so
it sat for a few years until I could find the cash
and get to it.” A string of second generation
GTIs in various states of disrepair followed,
each restored to an ever increasing standard
of acceptable averageness. It wasn’t until the
lad started toying with the Mk3 platform that
thoughts of a seriously awesome project began
to crystallise. “After owning the Mk3 GTI I fell in
love with the VR6 sound. I knew from then that I
needed to use one in a project car,” he recalled.
While plans for an all out custom build started
coming together, Ross admits the daily driver
situation descended into boring soot spewing
Mk4 mediocrity.
A little over five years ago the decision was
made to pull the pin on the project and get things
started. “I’ve owned many Mk2 GTIs and have
always been a fan of the two-door models,”
confirmed Ross, “At the time I hadn’t seen many
Jetta coupes at car shows or even around in
general, so to me it was something different,
something I could put my own twist on,” he told
us. “The previous VR6 Mk3 GTI that I owned
gave me my motivation but I have also always
been a fan of Bynum Builds custom cars over
the years. It’s difficult not to be impressed by
their work, they have turned out some very clean
and beautiful Mk2s over the year and I really
wanted to build something with that kind of style
and quality.” Finding a Mk2 coupe is a job at the
best of times, but locating a serviceable two
door booted Jetta in the north east corner of the
States is a tall order indeed, cold winters and
humid summers are not kind to German steel
and the tin worm flourishes. As luck would have
it, though, Ross didn’t have to wish too hard (see
what you did there – All) before an acceptable
donor car appeared, “The car almost literally
fell into my lap,” he joked, “The previous owner
of this coupe was a customer at our shop,” he
revealed, “I knew the car and its owner because
of my involvement with a local Volkswagen car
club group too. It had been in for some service
work off and on over the years but the young
man that owned it at the time was getting tired of
putting money into it to keep it running and was
looking to sell it.” The owner had wanted the car
to go to a good home and after hearing about
the kind of build Ross had planned money soon
changed hands.
Ross confesses the coupe was not in the
greatest of condition when he took it over, the
rust situation was thankfully not a major issue
but the car would need a fair amount of work. “It

was in generally rough shape,” he recalled, “The
hood and front fenders needed to be replaced
and the rest of the bodywork needed a little help
as well. It was also originally a 1.8-litre automatic
transmission car, so all of that would need to
go too.” At under a grand for a big bumper ’91
though the price was right. “It actually sat at the
shop for a year or two before I even touched it,”
lamented Ross. “Staying motivated to actually
start work and complete the build was the
hardest part of the project. After spending all
day working in the shop on customers' cars I
found it hard to put the time in after hours and
on weekends to complete the build. Eventually,
one week I replaced the battery, threw a set of
coilovers and BBS wheels on her so I could take
it to a local get together.” However the rims and
springs only stayed on for a few weeks. Before
long, the perfect storm of money, motivation
and man-hours finally saw the coupe back in the
shop and stripped to a shell. “The build took over
three years, off and on in order to complete.
Even after that time frame it wasn’t completely
finished, but together enough to drive.”
Project cars are never done and this six
shooter silver surfer is no exception to the rule,
Ross told us his original intention was to build
a nice car, a very nice car in fact, a cool daily
driver that he could show off at weekends,
something with enough power to scare the
locals and surprise a few racers at the track. As
the build went on though, that other immutable
law of custom car building also started to take

effect; “The more I got into the build the more
I started getting carried away,” he recalled,
“things went from casual to serious in a hurry, I
kept pushing myself to make things better and
better, things got out of hand pretty quickly.”
Plans to bolt on a pair of new front wings and
a bonnet followed by a quick colour match and
blend which soon escalated into a full doors
off, windows out repaint to show standard.
“After talking to my friend Rob Daywalt who
handles a lot of the paint for us at the shop,
he convinced me that I would be much happier
with a full respray rather than trying to make the
original paint match,” recalled Ross, “obviously
looking at the results he was right.” The stripped
shell was treated to hours of TLC with every
panel carefully repaired and restored, followed
by additional time applying coat after coat of
primer punctuated by laborious but necessary
block sanding. The brief on the bodywork was
to keep things simple and stock in appearance,
the classical square cut lines of the coupe
needed no help or enhancement to look tough
but tailored. “The factory colour was pretty
much perfect too,” affirmed Ross, “the Diamond
Silver Metallic just has a classic quality to it,
it just set the perfect tone for the look and
feel I wanted for the car.” Adorning the freshly
painted panels with a few trinkets during the
reassembly process was too much for Ross to
resist, everything in moderation mind; a simple
peppering of classical pieces to add a little
subtle seasoning to the mix. Turning back the

is certainly outstanding, there is also plenty
of old skool architecture to admire, but that’s
clearly not the reason it’s been a major crowd
favourite; “It gets a lot of attention and I always
get compliments on it,” confirmed Ross, “I think
it’s the contrast of colours with the exterior that
gets people,” There is no question the juxtaposition
of bright silver and medium chestnut brown is an
interesting choice, we suspect it’s an option most
people wouldn’t immediately think of, but the blend
of colours manages to be both subtle and sticking
at the same time. “That’s what I was going for,”
explained Ross, “It fits with the whole look of the
car I think; low key but it makes a strong statement
at the same time. We had a newer silver Audi in
the shop for service a while back with the same
combination, that’s what gave me the idea, the
colours just worked so well together.”
The subtlety stops once the bonnet release is
pulled and the hood hoisted open, the tenant in
the engine room is not the shy retiring type, “It’s a
fully built turbo VR6 running through a 3" custom
exhaust, it makes good power and it doesn’t do it
quietly,” Ross assured us. The twelve valve six gun
is again a very 90’s era choice in keeping with the
character of the build, our man certainly had the
knowledge and experience to shoehorn almost any
newfangled powerplant between shock towers, but
a turbo'd twelve valve big six is straight out of the
pages of early issues of PVW or faded Polaroids
from GTI International, Worthersee or Waterfest.
While there’s a catalogue of shop bought go faster
goodies in and around the six; Precision, APR,
Tial, Bosch... Ross reports it’s the hand built stuff
he’s proudest of. “If I’m honest the engine bay
is my favourite part of the entire build,” he told
us, “I spent many hours refining the small little
details with the pipe work and custom exhaust, I
wanted the whole package to look as good as it
ran and sounded.” With somewhere near easily
twice the stock horsepower feeding through a high
performance clutch to a Peloquin LSD the coupe
is not surprisingly a blast to drive. Ross reckons
he puts around two thousand miles on the motor
every year and plans to roast the radials a little on
the dragstrip in the future, too. So the next time
you’re cruising through Waynesboro, PA, stop by
VW specialists Denny’s Garage, maybe you might
spy this spectacular silver six shooter... parked out
front... with pride ■

t’s fair to say that when VW launched the
new Golf R back in 2010, they nailed it.
Purists may have been sad to see the
back of the sonorous 3.2 V6 in the R32,
but even they had to admit that the new,
turbocharged Mk6 was a belter. Packing
a potent EA113 engine, it offered blistering pace,
solid build and sure-footed four-wheel drive. But
VW really moved the game on with the Mk7 R.
Here was a car that looked even more
aggressive, but also came with the latest
generation of the 2.0 TSI. The MQB-chassis Golf
was powered by the EA888 Gen3 unit, which not
only offered scintillating performance from the
factory (especially with the DSG 'box), but was
also a tuners’ dream. Which is one of the reasons
that Glyn Fletcher chose one for his own project.
“I wanted a second car that I could modify for
track use,” he explains. “I’ve got an AMG C63S,
which is great, but in the winter it’s hard work
with all that power going to the rear wheels,” he
laughs. A Golf R made a lot sense. It would allow
Glyn to get around when the weather was bad,
but also give him something to play with on track.
“The plan was always to get it on track, but I
must admit, I went about it the wrong way,” he
says. Like many of us, he began by increasing
the power, before tackling the less sexy bits like
the brakes and suspension – the stuff that really
counts on track. “I’d not done any track days
before getting the Golf, so I was still learning,” he
says. “I was getting left behind by guys in Renault
Meganes, so I decided I needed more power.”
Having heard good things about local VAG
specialist and Revo dealer, ADS Automotive,
Glyn popped in to see main man, Dave Massey.
Over a nice brew, Glyn explained what he wanted
to achieve with the car and Dave helped him to
make a plan. Dave says, “Glyn came to me with
a stock R and we gradually tuned it using Revo
software and hardware. He’d take it away, do a
few track days, then come back asking what we
could do next.”
Things quickly progressed from Revo Stage 2
(which already made for a very lively and enjoyable
car) to an altogether more potent set-up.
The IS38ETR turbo package had recently been
released, so Glyn decided that was the way to
go. “I wanted something that felt OEM-like and
worked with the car,” he says. “It had to retain its
drivability as well as offer more power.” The fact it
could be installed without the need for forging the
internals also made it a very attractive proposition.
Developed over many months, on a wide
variety of EA888 Gen3 cars, the IS38ETR
package formed part of Revo’s Global
Development Programme. This meant the turbo

but it wasn’t only that, it was all really
usable, with no real lag
system was tested in different environments,
from freezing Russian winters to sweltering
South African summers. It’s a full plug-and-play
set-up that replaces the stock turbo and Dave
and the ADS team wasted no time installing
the package – which also required supporting
upgrades, including a Revo intercooler, and cold
air intake, plus a sports-cat downpipe and a
performance exhaust.
Once the upgrades had been installed, Glyn
took the car for a test drive. “I was blown away,”
he says. “There was so much power, but it
wasn’t only that, it was all really usable, with no
real lag” Unusually for a Golf 7R, this one has a
manual gearbox, something Glyn insisted upon.
“I wanted the car for track driving and, for me,
it has to be a manual; you have to drive them
properly. Sure, a DSG-equipped car will be faster,
but I think a manual is more fun.” Fair play.
This did mean, however, that the stock clutch
had to go. “It was struggling even before we
did the IS38ETR upgrade, so ADS fitted a much
stronger Helix unit.” It can handle the immense
strain produced by the engine upgrades, but also
retains a nice light feel. Again this fits with the
every-day drivability that was so important when
Revo developed the package.
With over 500bhp on tap, Dave at ADS
suggested some upgrades to the chassis would
be a wise move. Crucial to a quick lap on track
is the ability to brake hard, with no fade, and to
reduce unwanted pitch and roll in the turns. So a
full complement of upgrades were ordered.
Sticking with the Revo theme, the brakes
have made a huge difference. They allow Glyn
to adjust his line by trail-braking into a turn, but
he can also feel confident that if he leaves it
late, he can stamp on them and they’ll scrub off
speed – no bother. Similarly, the fully adjustable
KW suspension delivers the perfect balance of
on-road compliance, alongside taut and composed
handling on track. The dampers can be firmed up
for track, then softened for the road.
One thing’s for sure though, this R gets driven

properly. There are a lot of big-power cars
that seldom reach their potential, but Glyn has
spent his money so he can really enjoy it. “I’ve
been to the Nürburgring and Spa, plus lots of
UK circuits,” he says. “The Ring can be a real
challenge, as there’s very little run-off and so
many corners. I did resist ‘learning’ it on the
PlayStation, but I’ve since had to give in and
start getting to know it better,” he laughs.
Inside, things are still nice and civilised, in
that typical Golf R manner. Everything is nicely
screwed together and it retains all the luxuries.
But, the front seats have been replaced with
some fixed-back Recaros and TRS harness (in
blue to match the exterior) which offer much

I’ve gone as far as I want to power-wise. the next
step is to begin removing more weight from the car

but also provides a handy mounting point for the
obligatory GoPro.
“I’ve gone about as far as I want to power-
wise, so the next step is to begin removing
more weight from the car,” says Glyn. So, later
this year he’ll be looking at removing the sound
deadening and adding Plexiglass windows, along
with some other low-fat, track-focused mods.
Having really got into track days, Glyn admits
it’s the European circuits that really excite him.
“I’ve got a Touareg that I can use to tow the Golf
when I go to the Ring or Spa, so the long drives
aren't really a problem.”
Take a quick look at this Golf R and you’d be
forgiven for thinking it was just another lightly-
tuned example. But look closer and you’ll see
the towing eye, the big brakes and notice the
bucket seats and ’cage in the back. The wheels
have a few curb rashes and the paintwork isn’t
mint, but it wears it all with pride. This is no
show queen; it’s a VW that’s been tuned for
a purpose and it never fails to put a smile on
Glyn’s face. Job done, we’d say n

the most straightforward route.

hen Volkswagen first
stuffed GTI power into the
Mk1 Golf, an 8.9-second
sprint to 60mph must
have seemed other-worldly
from a front-wheel drive
family hatchback. Okay, these days it’s mid-
spec Passat diesel territory, but what a legacy;
what started as a toe-dip breathed new life into
a company known for clattering Beetles and
1930's engine technology. The GTI made it a
credible builder of performance cars - without
that leap of faith, you’d probably be reading
something very different here today.
Foot-wide drag slicks are a bit of a giveaway,
but Mike Pauciullo has made the GTI badge pack
a lot more action into that same timeframe. For
this still street-legal car (yes, street legal!), 8.87
seconds from a standing start is enough time to
cover a quarter mile, reach 167mph, and take
the front-wheel drive Mk4 record. Small problem;
it also turned out to be enough time to turn well
over a thousand horsepower of mechanical
wrath into a heap of shattered metal on the
undertray - all in the same run.
With that in mind, you’d let him off for drawing
a line under the experience and moving on to
a new challenge. But, 18 months and a new
engine later, Mike still isn’t shy when it comes
to exploring the ragged edges of metal fatigue.
He’s not done yet. “We had goals and we
achieved them - this was the first Mk4 in the
United States to run eights. Now we’ve made
it last a few rounds, and we’ve got a good
handle on that, we’re just trying to make it faster
and more consistent. If we go 8.85 at one
event, next time I want to aim for an 8.80 and
progressively wind it up.”
This all sounds even more impossible when
you realise it isn’t a full-time gig. Chasing the
weak points out of one of the planet’s fastest
hatchbacks not only comes in second to a
full-time job repairing underground gas mains
for the National Grid, but also behind his half-
stake in Stevebilt, supplying mail-order parts for
performance Volkswagens and Audis. And that’s
an interest forged out of what you see here.
The Golf wasn’t carefully picked for a career on
the strip - it was bought as a college runaround,
fresh off the forecourt 15 years ago, and Mike
has learnt as he’s gone along. He says he’s
taught himself to make something out of every
free moment. We’re wondering if he ever sleeps.
Volkswagens were new ground, but the other
half of the equation was a lot closer to home:
“I’ve been around drag racing my whole life,”
Mike explains. “I did a lot of time at the track
with my father, and used to race junior dragsters
with my brother, so that's basically how the
race aspect of my life started. But I essentially
started again with the Golf; racing imports
was something I was never into, so it was a
big learning experience. Which is frustrating at
times, but I love it. I don’t regret it at all.”
Already familiar with properly fast machinery,
the GTI novelty wore off pretty quickly, and the
inevitable happened around the same time. The
Golf had barely worn the moulding marks off its

tyres before it was lining up at a gamblers’ race
at Long Island Dragway, ending the event having
put $260 into Mike’s back pocket. By the time the
dealer would have been trying to book it in for its
first service, guidance from Clay Marshall at CTS
Turbo had already helped steer Mike towards a
bigger GT28RS ‘charger upgrade. And it wasn’t
just the sprint times that were gathering pace.

By his own admission, this was making the
car a bit of a black sheep in a show car-focused
local scene, and that’s only got tougher in the
meantime. Long Island Dragway closed in 2004,
becoming the last of the island’s quarter-mile
strips to get sold for a housing development. It
shifted some of that racing onto the streets, but
pushed the legal stuff over state boundaries,
mostly to New Jersey’s Atco Dragway and the
recently closed strip at Englishtown Raceway.
When it’s a long drive just to get to the start
line, it pays to make sure you’re getting the
most out of what you’ve brought with you.
At its core, there’s still a lot of Mk4 GTI to
be found here. At least in character. There
are no tubbed arches, or bodyshell cut apart
to rotate the engine 90 degrees, or put any
of its power to the back wheels. But what’s
developed out of years of outgrowing or over-
stretching parts at the strip is nothing short
of weapons-grade. This meant starting from
scratch, Mike explains; a forged FSI crank
turning higher-strength rods and custom-made
pistons, with an engine damper smoothing out
the vibrations of high-RPM abuse. Up top, the
better-flowing head from the earlier AEB 1.8T
has been CNC-ported and fitted out with bespoke
camshafts and an uprated valvetrain. Think of
it as an investment in not having a weekend’s
racing cut short by having to sweep up what’s
left at the end of a run.
What you can see is no less impressive. The
four-pot is dwarfed by the comically oversized
ATP Turbo-supplied 67mm Garrett GTX now
hurling fireballs of still-burning fuel upwards
through the bonnet’s exhaust port as it launches.
All Business Fab got the tough job of custom-
building inlet and exhaust manifolds big enough
to flow that much air into the engine, while
packing them into the remaining space in the
Golf’s front end, while Kevin Black at Lugtronic
was behind the map needed to keep eight
injectors feeding it with enough race fuel at full
boost. Mike’s a believer in doing as much himself
as possible, but isn’t afraid to call in the big guns
when needed.
“The car hasn’t been on a dyno for a few
years now, but it’s definitely in the 1000whp
spectrum,” he tells us. “We don’t normally just
make power hits like that, for the simple fact
that I don’t believe, and my tuner doesn’t believe,
in beating the crap out of the car for a number.
Any adjustments to the map are done on the fly,
using real-time data. But I’m more interested in
track times than dyno numbers - those are cool
to have, but a time slip is better to show off.”
That’s a heroic power figure for a two-wheel
drive car, and a number that’s just as merciless
when it comes to finding the weakest link in the
transmission. So there aren’t any. Lugtronic
supplied a straight-cut, four-wheel dog gearset to
fit the stock 02J case, and it’s paired with twin-
disc Clutch Masters hardware and the strongest
axles The Driveshaft Shop supply to make sure
nothing snaps as the M&H slicks grip the tarmac.
Forget everything you think you know about front-
wheel drive and look up the videos if you don’t
believe us; fuss-free and arrow straight off the

line, with ETs that speak for themselves. That
parachute isn’t for display.
“It’s not too hard driving the car, as I’m
comfortable with it. That was an issue we had
at first, I wasn’t capable of driving it well at all.
It took a whole season to learn, but it’s become
second nature. The first pass of the year is
always the nervous one, making sure you don’t
mess anything up, but people expect it to be a
lot harder than it is. Four-wheel drive is a comfort
thing, I believe.”
No longer a daily driver, excesses under the
bonnet are paired with the steady removal of

anything that’s not mission-critical for its time on
track. The power steering and climate control
systems are long gone, while the cabin luxuries
extend only as far as a pair of just-about-padded
Kirkey bucket seats and some acoustic carpet
within its ten-point roll cage. Most of the external
panels - including the roof - are fibreglass,
including a custom front end big enough to
house 26x10" tyres at full lock.
The result; the Golf weighs in at around
1150kg; less than a base-spec new Polo even
with Mike on board, and that’s carefully balanced
out. The rear beam is chromoly and fitted with
lighter Wilwood brakes, taking 70kg out of the
back end, while there’s an 80kg weight bar and
the battery under the intercooler, both helping
to shift weight frontwards for better traction.
Given that Mike decided against a mid-project
swapover to a lighter Mk2 shell, wouldn’t it have
been easier to aid that front-rear balance with a
heavier engine?
Mike laughs: “No, the 1.8T will be staying in
the car for a while longer,” he says. “It works
very well for what we have going on - the
VR6 is good, and the 2.5-litre five-cylinder is
an excellent engine too, but we’ve built our

weak points, but we’ve worked through them
and fixed them. Once you’ve gone to the track
and put it through four or five events, you know
that’s a step in the right direction.”
These days, that’s the only way to test it.
The Golf might still be technically road legal
once it swaps the slicks for DOT-approved
tyres, but it hasn’t ventured onto the public
highways since 2013. Not because it’s
undriveable on the road, Mike explains, but
because he’d realised how impossible it would
be to recoup the investment in time and

the garage and just brought out for events
money after an accident - assuming he’d been
lucky enough not to headbutt the roll cage in
the process. Restricting the mileage has been
useful, though, as it’s meant he can keep a
closer eye on maintenance after every event. A
meticulous process of checking for leaks and
fractures, examining the mounting points, and
even dropping the transmission to change the
clutch. Better to find faults while it’s idle, after all.
“Other than that, if something breaks, you’ll
know about it. Once we had put the cage in,
we started using it as it would be at the track,
minus the slicks, and that’s when I started finding
other cars to drive. Right now I’m using a 2014
Dodge Cummins pickup as a daily, and that’s
my tow vehicle to get this to the track. It’s safer,
and more cost-effective kept in the garage and
just brought out for events. The car doesn’t cost
much money to run, it’s the travelling that adds
up,” he explains.
Which says a lot considering the carnage this
unleashed on its record-setting run at 2016’s
World Cup Finals. Putting in an 8.87-second
sprint wound up snapping the crank with enough

force to shatter most of the block, twist the
engine mounts and damage the transmission
because it was unlucky enough to get in the way.
But the learning curve has been helped not only
by trial and error, but by becoming a part of the
New Jersey drag fraternity and sharing solutions
with other drivers. Mike reckons the big issues -
cracked blocks being a persistent headache - are
behind him, but there are still challenges ahead.
“It's small problems that have biting us, and
they should be resolved now, so his year should
be better for track times. The car is never
done, and there’s always something I’ll want to
try. You’re only finished with a project when you
decide to sell up, and go to the track to watch. I
don’t want to let it go. The way I see it, the car is
done for this weekend, but when we come home
I’m sure there will be something we’ll wanna
change or work on.”
So, as unlikely as it might sound, this front-
wheel drive family hatchback is putting in quarter
mile times quick enough to outpace America’s
muscle cars on their own turf. Not a bad legacy
for a 40-year-old toe dip, if you ask us n

It’s been said that stance can make or break a project car and, indeed,
some of their owners truly miss the mark. Not Mike Lovas. The British
Columbian resident built a memorable ’80 Mk1 that sits just right on
BBS RS003s. But there’s more to it than a sorted ride height!

Y
ou’ve seen it before. You know,
the car looking a bit funky
because the owner simply
messed up his choice of wheels
or suspension. The ground
clearance could be too high or
the wheels’ diameter too small. The rims’ offset
might be all wrong or the tyres’ height too short.
But when it comes all together, you end up with
a killer vehicle such as this 1980 Mk1 Rabbit
owned by Canadian-resident Mike Lovas.
Some will argue you can’t go wrong with
honeycomb-style BBS rims and there’s truth
to that statement… Yet, they come in a
variety of sizes/diameters, since several car
manufacturers began adopting the iconic three-
piece RS design in the early 80s. The extensive
range of models available thereby translates into
a wider range of potential errors, when choosing
them. Mike knew precisely what he wanted
though: 7x16 RS003s with an ET of 25mm,
which many consider as 'unobtainium'. That lucky
devil ultimately scored a set though and, by all
accounts, they look perfect on his project car.
But we are getting ahead of ourselves, as
we haven’t even introduced the hero of our
tale. Back in 1982, a year before he was born,
Mike’s parents moved from Hungary and settled
near Vancouver, British Columbia. The family
spoke Hungarian at home, hence he never
forgot his European roots. Rather than posters
of US muscle cars, he plastered the walls of his
bedroom with Euro cars, mostly Volkswagens.

 Mike received his driver license shortly after
he turned 16 (the legal age in Canada) in 1999,
and immediately went on a hunt for a ride,
settling on an Oceanic blue 1986 Audi Coupe
GT. Not a bad choice for a first car! “It was in
very good condition and already lowered with
Spax springs”, he adds. “I then picked up a
set of five-spoke 17" wheels, which were all
the rage among my friends at the time. On a
trip to Hungary, my dad brought me back a set
of H1/H4 E-code headlights; they completely
transformed the front end and gave me that
sense of European pride.”
Mike stepped up the game with his second
VAG ride, a ’95 Jetta VR6. It didn’t remain stock
for long, as it quickly adopted KW coilovers and
Mk4 GLI Recaro seats. However, he didn’t stop
there as he explains: “On a trip to Hungary in
2005, I visited a few auto breakers and bought a
Vento front and rear bumpers – they were nearly
unobtainable in North America at the time. I also
upgraded the engine with a Vortech supercharger
kit, cams and a Schrick intake manifold.”
After winning several awards, he sold it in
2007 and hopped into a Mk2 GTI with a VR6
conversion that became his daily driver. The
experience gave him a taste of an old school
project and he soon began making plans to put
together a Mk1 model. “Before I even had the
car or lead on one, I was buying the hard-to-find
parts”, he ponders. “In 2008, I located a very
solid Westmoreland Rabbit that was a perfect
candidate for my restoration. A friend performed

the extensive metalwork in his private garage,
taking nearly 50 hours to complete.”
The metamorphosis involved a Euro-style
radiator support and wings/fenders, supplied
by Evolved Auto Recyclers, while the rear panel
was filled for the short European taillights. As the
sunroof had serious issues, Mike located another
roof panel section, then carefully welded that into
place. Rolling the wheel arches insured the four
165/45/16 tyres would not rub against the metal.
Other alterations include shaving a few odds and
ends for a cleaner look: side markers, wiper and

the nozzle on the hatch, plus 27 holes in the
cleaned engine bay.
During the bodywork process, he acquired
a wrecked 2003 20th Anniversary GTI, which
supplied its 1.8T engine. Rich Garau and
Jon Chang of Shift Autosport mocked up the
powerplant in the Rabbit’s shell, finished in primer
by then. The swap involved installing a custom
downpipe connected to a 2.5" stainless exhaust
line; but the crew made a few additional tweaks:
chipping to remove the immobilizer, an Autotech
flywheel and a Sachs clutch. The four cylinder
bolts to a Golf Mk4 O2J gearbox, complemented
with a Wavetrac limited slip differential and
Scirocco 16v axles. Note that the lack of a
battery (relocated to the back), A/C system and
steering pump under the bonnet!
Once serviced and properly tuned, Rich
and Jon removed the turbocharged motor
and put it in storage, before Paragon Collision
took delivery of the body. “The painter there
owned a Rabbit Cabriolet at the time and was
enthusiastic about the opportunity to work on
my car”, continues Mike. “They did a fantastic

preparation and sprayed on a flawless coat of
1980 LA1D Lemon yellow. After completing the
paint, the engine was reinstalled, along with the
intercooler, stainless-steel piping and polished
intake manifold.” The car certainly looks great in
this colour. Based on our research, Volkswagen
offered two other yellows for the US market in
’80 (specifically Bamboo yellow and Sunbright
yellow); but visually, Mike’s pick proves the most
intense of the three.
Next stop: Tim Cardon at Velocity Upholstery,
who handled the interior’s retrim. Mike fell in love
with the cockpit of a Champagne Edition model,
dressed in green; so, he longed to replicate it.
Tim did not disappoint, using green vinyl on the
Recaro front seats (they came from a Scirocco
S) and the Rabbit rear bench, which match the
fresh headliner, centre console and custom
door panels – the latter incidentally feature dyed
handles and cranks.

with green stitching covers the early Rabbit
dash, to complement the ashtray and glovebox

door tinted the same colour. Looks great, eh?
Notice the lack of radio, replaced with a cubby
pocket, plus sea grass green carpet and custom
floor mats with embroidered VW logos covering
the floor. The driver keeps his eyes on a pair of
N.O.S. gauges, whilst getting his hands busy
with a leather-wrapped Mk1 Scirocco Wolfsburg
steering wheel and a Kamei Golf Ball knob. “The
interior is still my favourite part of the driving
experience”, comments the proud owner.
As Tim was busy using his sewing machine,
Mike began to reassemble the car, adding H&R
Ultra Low coilovers and some serious braking
power: 10.1" Wilwood discs in front, together
with Scirocco 16v discs and Mk4 calipers in
the back. Let’s not forget the chromed backing
plates and stainless-steel brake hoses, which
perfectly finish the chassis work. The exterior
received plenty of extra love, too, courtesy of
new trim pieces, European bumpers and those
desirable BBS RS003 wheels. Their polished
finish nicely matches the door handles, plus
the hard-to-find chrome metal gas cap and flag

MIKE's having a blast driving it, raving about
the reliable engine that delivers 180bhp

mirrors. While the vehicle doesn’t have an A/C
system anymore, bolt-in vent windows bring
some fresh air during the hot British Columbian
summers.
Very few Mk1 Golfs/Rabbits have attained a
level of perfection comparable to Mike’s project
car, in and around Vancouver. Well, come to
think of it, this statement proves true for the
whole country of Canada… Folks just love
this Lemon yellow ride and, not surprisingly,
its owner has gathered his share of trophies,
including Best Engine, Best Paint and Best
Interior. He also went home with a couple of
“Best of Show” awards, following Waterwerks
on the Green, plus So-Euro just a few months
ago. But most importantly, Mike is having a blast
driving it, raving about the reliable engine that
delivers 180bhp – loads of fun in a car weighing
about 1000 kilos! ■

I
n a land famed for its love of hugely
expensive Sport Utility Vehicles and
hypercars, there’s also a big following
for Volkswagens in the Middle East. We
visited the 2018 Dub Drive, where the
police allow the show to cruise among
the skyscrapers in Dubai, we got total access
to a FIA race track, and went to one of the best
driving roads that you haven’t heard of until now.
What started in 2017 as the Middle East’s
largest Volkswagen gathering, came back
bigger and better for 2018. Held at the Dubai
Autodrome, a legit racetrack that hosts GT and
Touring Car races, attendance started at 150
cars in the first year, and looked to have doubled
when we were there this March. VW clubs from all
parts of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia,
Oman, Bahrain, and elsewhere made the journey
for the event, and we even bumped into friends
from South Africa and the UK throughout the day.
The show started with everyone getting a first
look at each others cars, while preparing for an
immediate highlight of the day - a huge driving
tour on the motorways around Dubai, with full
support from the local Police! Hundreds of VWs,
cruising two lanes wide towards the city centre,
and through the spectacular downtown area,
past the 822 metre tall Burj Khalifa skyscraper...

Both the huge line of cars and the architecture
looked fantastic, and I was already wondering
what sort of car wonderland we’d arrived into.
As we rolled back into the Autodrome, a full
day of show festivities still laid ahead. As well
as a show and shine with the top car’s owner
being awarded a trip to Worthersee in Austria,
there was plenty of fun for both the owners and
their families. Volkswagen provided a track day
at no extra charge, and for those (including
myself) who didn’t have a track ready car, a
selection of Golf GTI and R models were waiting
to be borrowed. Food vendors, tyre change
challenges, and live music were also on hand
to keep the chilled out atmosphere going for
everyone who wasn’t on track.
The cars were primarily newer models, with a
high number of R and R-Line models, and plenty
of GTIs of course. The Volkswagen R Group had
flown in from Germany to check out the scene
too, with head honcho Jost Capito deciding that
he’d also like to invite the winner of Best Golf R
to fly in for Worthersee as well, and asking me
to make the announcement, gulp! The winner
of Best of Show was the white new VW Beetle
owned by Sameh Helal, with a locally produced
carbon fibre bodykit that he designed himself.
Ahmed Al-Abdullah with his white Mk7 Golf R won
the second trip to Austria, winning the Best Golf
R title, also with a unique bodykit added to his
car. There was a huge number of different clubs
in attendance, a lot of whom helped Volkswagen
ME to organise the event, with VW Oman Club
taking home an award for Best Club this year.
The following day we were up bright and early
for an epic drive to the even more epic Jabal Jais
Mountain in Ras Al Khaimah. It's the highest point
in the United Arab Emirates, at around 1900
metres. You've probably all heard of the Stelvio
Pass, or some of the other epic roads dotted
around the world. I've never seen the road up
to Jabel Jais on the lists of top driving passes,
but it absolutely should be! Switchback after
switchback, with perfect smooth tarmac leading
you to the next amazing corner, and the next
amazing view.
I was riding in a Passat R36 with its owner
Eyad, and we were loving using the power and
4Motion going up the steep slopes. The sun
worn rock elicited thoughts of the famous French
Mont Ventoux, but there's one very big difference
here compared to France where the police love
to give tickets.. The local tourism board had
once again stepped up massively, and the road
was closed and ours to enjoy privately. With no
on-coming traffic to worry about, we enjoyed the

drive, and when we did stop for photographs,

the cars were spread across both lanes as we
leisurely hung out chatting and admiring the
world-class views.
The mountain is home to the longest zip
line ride in the world, but our attention turned
to blasting back down the mountain and on
through the valleys, and heading to maybe one
of the best hotel locations in the world. The
Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, located in the Wadi
Desert, honestly made me feel a little out of
place when we pulled up with lowered cars and
loud exhausts. I mean, the NH Hotel for MIVW is
amazing, and even the camping field at Edition
38 with a cheap tent and your mates is also
really fun, but this is the stuff of dreams, not
car shows, right? But as soon as our group of
Volkswagens parked up in true show parking
style, it felt completely normal and welcoming.
We were treated to a Falconry display, and a
fantastic meal, before we make the drive back
to Dubai - playing games of spot the camel
along the way.
I really do believe that anywhere in the world
that has well modified Volkswagens and friendly
people can offer an amazing time, with new

orge Motorsport might now have one of the
largest and most diverse ranges of aftermarket
tuning kit anywhere in the world, but this is a
company that's long been closely intertwined with
VW Group models of all kinds. The guys and girls

A modest budget needn't be a barrier to aftermarket expression,
particularly when it comes to the Forge Motorsport range. Granted,
you won't be selecting from dump valves and intercooler kits for a
'bullseye' these days, but there's still plenty to tempt those keen on
stamping their personality onto their car.

opens the door to all manner of Forge hardware,
including this VW Group Blow Off Valve kit for
the 1.4T, 1.8T and 2.0T FSI and TSI engines,
including those built between 2011 and 2013

A complete, fit-and-forget replacement for the OEM airbox and inlet tract, Forge's
induction kit comprises a new intake made from mandrel bent 70mm aluminium (powder
coated in a natty shade of black), a high-flow Pipercross filter housed in a custom made
enclosure situated at the front of the Golf. All connections are made via high quality
silicone couplers and stainless steel hose clamps.
The result? Well, a full 3-5bhp on a completely stock engine and as much as 15bhp on
those cars running remapped engines, underscoring the limitations of the OEM induction

to haul even the hardest charging of cars to a
halt in no time.
The size of the discs means that Forge's
brake kit is only suitable for fitment with 18"
wheels or larger, and those running standard VW
wheels may need to fit a 5mm spacer in order
to clear the back of the spokes.

Si’s finally found time to fit up his new
brakes and wheels, plus he looks at
the bodywork and a possible colour
change. It’s all go, go, go!

W
ith summer just around the
corner, I’m itching to get the
Mk2 back out of hibernation
and on the road! The last time
you saw it in these pages
all the new parts had arrived, and I was trying
to find time to get them fitted. Well, somehow,
I managed to find a few hours, and those
delicious PB Brakes (www.pbbrakes.com) six-
pots stoppers with 304mm discs are now bolted
up and ready for me to go play with.
The fitting was one of the simplest things I’ve
ever done, honestly! PB literally provide every
single component, including braided hoses and
unlike so many other ‘direct fit’ stuff I’ve installed
in the past that usually still needs some sort of PB Brakes supplied the six-pot
stoppers and 304mm discs, which

quick bleed, it was time to take the car out for
a test. And WOW, what a difference they make! I
haven’t had chance to bed them in yet, but even
out of the box they’re seriously impressive so I
look forward to giving you guys a full report on
their performance a little future down the road.
Of course, this also meant I could finally fit

1.2s. In super rare ET-10 off-sets, and wearing
a set of ultra-grippy Federal 595RSRs, these
things manage to fill the 4” extended composite
MBL76 arches perfectly, without the need for
any spacers. Result!
So with the brakes and wheels fitted, it’s time
to take the car out and use it properly, right?
Erm, well no, not really… As you can see from
the photos, the glass is out and the car is being
prepped for paint. As I write this, my angry little
weapon will be in the booth and undergoing a
complete colour change. What colour you say?

t’s safe to say I have been attending
car shows for a long time, all kinds
of shows for all kinds of cars. And
you know what, they are all different.
Different cars, different venues,
different styles and very different
people. And this is where my favourite show of
the season shines, because of the people. I go
to a car show for the cars of course, but it's the
people that keep me there all day and returning
every season. New England Dustoff has far and
away the best crowd, but then I would say that
being the event organiser. Honestly, though,
it’s also one of the reasons I keep putting on
the event each year, because of the crowds of
people it attracts. eEuroparts brought

RS3 which stayed dry
season opener at Thompson Speedway in tucked up inside…
Thompson, CT then you know it's the cars and the
people that make the show what it is. No matter
what the weather may be doing (and trust me,
we’ve seen it all over the years) the cars and the
crowds venture out every April regardless.
This year’s event was held on Sunday the
29th, but before the VW/Audi gathering could
happen on the Charity Laps for Foundation
Blue’s event had to happen on Saturday
afternoon. Now in it's third year this additional
event has become a favourite for show goers,
and it has grown into quite a spectacle. Pay a
small fee that goes directly to Foundation Blue
everyone returned to pit row and all you can see
(foundation-blue.com) and you get to drive your is smiles… Dustoff weekend has officially begun
car on the race track behind the speedway’s
official Pace Car. This year brought out 25+
cars to do just that and what a blast it was!

Cory Sterling at the helm, several laps later
everyone returned to pit row and all you can
see is smiles… Dustoff weekend has officially
begun. With music, food and some drinks in the
paddock it was eventually time to head to the
hotel for some sleep before the big day started. You never know what

blown raining. And it’s forecast to rain on and
off all day. If you are a Dustoff regular than you
know that a certain amount of moisture is kind
of a thing with the show, so much so in fact that
the name has unofficially changed to Rinseoff on
a number of occasions. But thankfully it generally
Dustoff is all about the people, but the cars play a big part, too, with a great mix of new and old metal…

only rains for a small portion of the show.
The big question on my mind is will people
still come? Will the great cars still roll out of the
garage and into the rain? Will friends from far
away make that drive in the wet? If only it could
be like the 75 degree sunny day we'd just had.
Arrive, park up, relax, stay dry and
soak up the great atmosphere
Most would agree that rain in the morning
usually signals a death blow for many shows,
but Dustoff is different. People love Dustoff,
even when it rains. In fact, most have just come
to accept it’s going to happen so thankfully
the crowds still came. The cars rolled in… it
rained… and more cars and crowds showed up.
In fact, the show went on as if it was a sunny and
warm day with over 300 show cars rolling up.
Strolling through the show grounds gave a
good sense of where the trends and styles are
headed this season. The quality of the cars
was out of this world. From full on builds to
daily drivers to restorations, it seemed if you
were looking for ideas or inspiration it was
there. Most surprising to me was the huge
turnout of air-cooled VWs and Mike Cashman’s
Rat Rod on BBS RS just killed it. Knowing how
unforgiving these cars are on a nice day I was
very impressed at just how many came out in
the wet. Dustoff’s Legend Class featured some
great builds competing for a spot on the coveted
Legend Cup. Dave Ferreira’s flawless Corrado
16v turbo on BBS RF's kept company with Chris
and Amanda Reis’ class winning Mk2 Jetta Coupe
and 1.8T swapped GTI. Weirdly all looking even
better when wet. I guess that's kind of a thing.
Thankfully the Dustoff crew had use of the
paddock areas to house traders which proved
a great place to get out of the rain, dry off
and spend some of that hard earned money
burning a hole in your pocket. Collective East
had their usual hoard of rare wheels and seats.
Show sponsor KD Designs were also there to
show off its latest builds and current projects
and eEuroparts had their LMS RS3 race car on
display. If you couldn't find what you were looking
for there then the swap meet inside was full of
hidden gems, too.
As per usual judges went out and picked
their favourites and awards were eventually
handed out. Whell Lab awarded a shiny new set
of Rotiform wheels to a lucky show goer and
afterwards the crowds started to finally make
their way back to their cars. Another year of
Dustoff was in the books and once again I was
simply amazed by all of the support, especially
given the weather. To think all of these people
think enough of a show (run by a couple guys in
their spare time) to come out and spend a great
day in the rain celebrating our favourite car
company blows me away. To say I am humbled
and already looking forward to next year would
be very understated.
As a side note, because of the fabulous
support we receive we were able to award
a $500 tool scholarship to a student in an
automotive program. So thank you to everyone

What are these Reloaded pages all about
then? We launched this monthly regular feature
back around the time we celebrated PVW’s
20th birthday. We were feeling nostalgic at
the time, and judging by how popular the
90sVWShowScene group on Facebook and the
@90svwdubscene account on Instagram are
these days, we know we’re not the only ones
who enjoy a good look back in to modded VW
history. Which is what Reloaded is all about. Each
month we pick a car from back in the day, no
rules, and take a look at what made it so special.

B
ack in 2006 we were privy to the
relaunch of one of the scene’s OG
names, Oxford Edition. Readers of
a certain age will know the Oxford
Edition moniker, the Oxford-based
crew had pretty much dominated the early ‘90s
water-cooled scene and introduced most of
us to Euro-look cars with their legendary Mk2
builds. In 2006 they were back, and what you’re
looking at here is what they hit the scene with
after their decade or so away from the limelight.
Some of you will know what happened next in
the Oxford Edition story but we’re not going to
get in to all that again, instead we’re going to
focus on the car itself. After all, there’s little
point in digging up the past and controversy or
no controversy, there’s no denying the impact
the Oxford Edition New Beetle made on the
scene when it debuted on our cover in 2006.
Prior to the car breaking cover the rumour
mill was in full swing about what car the guys
would make their come back with. Most people
assumed they would be turning out another
Mk2, after all that’s the platform they made their
name with, but OE had other ideas and wanted
to build a car that hadn’t been done before. Take
an obsession with pushing things forward and
mix in a further obsession with the Porsche 964
Speedster and this was the incredible result, a
Beetle Speedster.
The car started life as a lowly 2.0-litre
automatic but with the help of Auto Performance
Solutions in Brackley the guys set about
transforming it in to something truly worthy
of the Speedster name. Out went the old 2.0-
litre 8v lump and in went a much more tunable
1.8T from a S3 which saw some choice tuning
work before being slotted in between the
Beetle’s chassis legs. The wheels were from the
Techart catalogue, which tied in nicely with the
Porsche theme, and the brakes were also from
the Stuttgart stable in the shape of Cayenne
calipers partnered to huge ECS discs. The star
of the show however, and what drew all the
crowds when it finally hit the show scene was
the incredible bodywork. The OE crew wanted
the car to look like a factory concept and the
hand-crafted rear panel carefully fabricated by
classic race car builders Shapecraft and the
blanking panel on top of the windscreen were the
pieces that brought it all together. The bodywork
was as far from standard as it was possible to
go with the New Beetle with virtually everything
smoothed or straight up deleted, while the
Aquarius blue paintwork, black wheels and
detailing really gave the car a fresh, modern feel.
If the car had been chromed, plated and highly
polished it would have been, well, a bit much in
our eyes so to bring it back down with a subtle,
OEM+ paintjob was a smart move. The attention
to detail on this car was, at the time, next level
stuff, and the car helped set the tone for the
next generation of UK ‘show car’. It wasn’t just
the UK where the car went down a storm though,
it also made waves out at Worthersee where the
guys reportedly drove it down through Europe
in the rain sans roof and windows. Whether they
really did or simply put it on a train instead is
probably a question for another issue though…

Amazingly it’s five years since David Fröhlich’s Kevlar-clad
Mk1 graced the cover (left). Inside we featured an awesome
Mk2 1.8T with S3 running gear (right), a pair of force-induced
Mk1s, Chris Scragg’s Mk1 TT, Sabrina Roy’s purple Bora,
Ben Peterson’s Mk5 GTI, a trio of Revo-equipped cars, we
fitted Vibra-Technics bushes to Dave’s Mk2 and wrapped with
coverage from Worthersee, VDub Campfest and Limerick VW.

A decade ago Graham Angus’ Resto Mk1 took the cover slot,
while inside we featured Frank Clarici’s Mk1 1.8T, Steven Doe’s
Mk4 1.8T, Mick Bell’s Mk3.5 VR6, a 600+bhp Mk4 R32 turbo
and short-Sport quattro rep’ with a V8 motor. We also featured
a bunch of shows including Worthersee, Stonor Park, GTI
International, the Tokyo Auto Salon and DTM Autowerkes’ BBQ.
