Romeo and Juliet, Act 3, Scene 1

Benvolio (Matty)
I beg you, let’s go home. It’s hot, and the Capulets are all over the place. We will end up fighting
if we see them. Hot days like today get people angry.
Mercutio (DW)
You’re the kind of guy who walks into a bar, puts his sword down on the table, and says, “I hope
I don’t have to use you.” By the time he’s having his second drink, he draws his sword on the
bartender for no reason.
Benvolio (Matty)
Do you really think I’m like that?
Mercutio (DW)
Come on, you get angry at the smallest thing. And when you're in the mood to get angry you
always find something to get angry about.
Benvolio (Matty)
If I were as quick to get into fights as you are, my life insurance rates would be big.
Mercutio (DW)
Your life insurance? You’re a fool!

Tybalt, Petruchio, and some other Capulets enter.

Benvolio (Matty)
Oh my god, the Capulets are coming.
Mercutio (DW)
I’m leaving, I don’t care.
Tybalt (DL)
[To his men] Follow me. I’ll speak to them.
[To Benvolio and Mercutio] Good afternoon, gentlemen. I’d like to have a word with one of
you.
Mercutio (DW)

1
Just a word? How about you combine it with a punch?
Tybalt (DL)
You’ll find me happy to do that, sir, if you give me a reason.
Mercutio (DW)
Can’t you find a reason without me giving you one?
Tybalt (DL)
Do you hang out with Romeo?
Mercutio (DW)
“Hang out?” What are we? In a band? My God - “hang out!”
Benvolio (Matty)
Everybody can see us here. Either we go somewhere private and talk, or just leave us alone.
Mercutio (DW)
Let them watch. I won’t move for anyone.
Tybalt (DL)
Well, here comes the man I’m looking for.

Romeo enters.

Tybalt (DL)
Romeo, I have just one thing to say to you: you’re a villain.
Romeo (Sean)
Normally I would get angry at this kind of greeting, but I love you. And you clearly don’t know
me because I’m not a villain. Goodbye.
Tybalt (DL)
These words aren’t excuses for what you’ve done to me. Fight me.
Romeo (Sean)
I’ve never done anything to you. In fact, I love you more than you could ever understand, dear
Capulet, be satisfied.
Mercutio (DW)
Such boring and dishonorable submission. [Draws his sword] Tybalt, you rat catcher, fight me.
Tybalt (DL)

2
What do you want from me?
Mercutio (DW)
Dear King of Cats, I want all nine of your lives. Will you draw your swords for me?
Tybalt (DL)
I accept your fight. [He draws his sword]
Romeo (Sean)
Mercutio, put your sword down.
Mercutio (DW)
[To Tybalt] Let’s do this. Attack.
Romeo (Sean)
[Draws his sword] Benvolio, help me stop them with our swords. The Prince has banned
fighting in Verona. Stop! Tybalt! Mercutio!

Mercutio and Tybalt fought.

Romeo tries to break the fight. Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm.

Petruchio (Jonathan)
Tybalt, let’s get out of here.
Mercutio (DW)
I’m hurt. I curse both of your families. I’m done. Did I hurt him?

The Capulets leave.

Benvolio (Matty)
Are you hurt?
Mercutio (DW)
Just a scratch. Still, it hurts. Get me a doctor.
Romeo (Sean)
Don’t worry. The injury can’t be that bad.
Mercutio (DW)
Why in the hell did you step between us?

3
Romeo (Sean)
I was trying to stop the fight.
Mercutio (DW)
Benvolio, carry me inside a house. I’m done. I hope both your families burn.

Mercutio and Benvolio leave.

Benvolio enters.

Benvolio (Matty)
Romeo, Mercutio is dead!
Romeo (Sean)
Today’s dark fate will determine the future. This unfortune is only the beginning of what’s about
to come.

Tybalt enters.

Tybalt (DL)
Hello! My friend!
Romeo (Sean)
Alive and happy while Mercutio is dead? You have no respect. I will let anger guide me. Today,
either you or I must go with my friend, Mercutio.
Tybalt (DL)
Poor Romeo, you’ve hung out with him on earth, now you’ll go to heaven with him.
Romeo (Sean)
Our fight will decide who goes to heaven.

They fight. Tybalt dies.

Benvolio (Matty)
Romeo, run! The citizens are coming. If you’re caught, the Prince will kill you.
Romeo (Sean)

4
Oh, I’ve been played by fate!
Benvolio (Matty)
Why are you still here?

Romeo leaves.
The Citizen enters.

Citizen (Jonathan)
Where did the man who killed Mercutio go?
Benvolio (Matty)
Tybalt is lying right there.
Citizen (Jonathan)
[To Tybalt] Get up and follow me. By the name of the Prince, you must obey.

The Citizen leaves.

The Prince, Montague, Lady Capulet enter.

Prince (DW)
Where are the villains that started this fight?
Benvolio (Matty)
Oh, dear Prince, I can explain everything about the fight. Tybalt killed Mercutio. Then, Romeo
kills Tybalt in revenge.
Lady Capulet (Sean)
My nephew, Tybalt! Prince, you must kill Romeo for murdering my dear nephew!
Prince (DW)
Benvolio, who started the fight?
Benvolio (Matty)
Tybalt did.
Lady Capulet (Sean)
Benvolio is a Montague. Of course he would lie. There must have been twenty Montagues
fighting one Tybalt. Prince, I beg you to give Tybalt the justice he deserves.

5
Prince (DW)
Romeo killed Tybalt. Tybalt killed Mercutio. Who should pay the price of Mercutio’s death?
Montague (DL)
Not Romeo, Prince. His crime was justice.
Prince (DW)
And for that, he must leave Verona and never come back. If I see him, I will kill him.

They all exit.
