WORKSHEET – 3
CHAPTER – 10
LIGHT (REFRACTION)

1. What is the value of the focal length of sun glasses? Also write its power.
2. Does refraction of light take place or not when a ray of light strikes the surface of
separation between two media at right angle?
3. Explain with the help of diagram, why apparent depth of water bodies is less than
their actual depth?

4. What is meant by number of lens?

5. No matter how far you stand from a mirror, your image always appears erect and
diminished. Identify the type of mirror.
6. Refractive index of two material medium X and Y are 1.3 and 1.5 respectively. In
which of the two, the light would travel faster and why?
7. Why is refractive index of a medium always greater than one?
8. The refractive index of diamond is 2.42. What is the meaning of this statement
in the relation to speed of light?
9. A lens X has focal length 20 cm and a lens Y as focal length 40 cm. which lens
would you select to obtain a more convergent beam of light and why?

10. With respect to air, the refractive index of ice is 1.31 and that of rock salt is 1.54.
Calculate refractive index of rock salt with respect to ice and refractive index of ice
with respect to rock salt.
11. With the help of ray diagram, show that when light falls obliquely and emerges from
opposite face of glass slab, the emergent ray is parallel to incident ray.
12. An object of height 5 cm is placed at the distance of 30 cm from a convex lens of
focal length 20 cm. Find the position, nature and size of the image formed by the
lens.
13. For the same angle of incidence 45 0, the angle of refraction in two transparent
media: A and B is 100 and 200 respectively. Out of A and B which medium is
optically denser and why?
14. Refractive indices of media A, B, C and D are given below:
Media Refractive Index
A 1.00
B 1.50
C 1.33
D 1.65
E 2.42
(a) In which of these four media is the speed of light (i) maximum and (ii) minimum?
Find refractive index of medium D with respect to medium A.
(b) Write the pairs of two media in which (i) speed of light increases (ii) speed of light
decreases (iii) change in the speed of light is maximum (iv) change in the speed
of light is minimum.
15. Explain with the help of diagram, why apparent depth of water bodies is less than
their actual depth?

16. Light enters from air into glass which has a refractive index of 1.5. Calculate the
speed of light in glass. The speed of light in air is 3×108 m/s.
17. A concave lens of focal length 20 cm forms an image at a distance of 10 cm from the
lens. What is the distance of the object from the lens? Also draw the ray diagram.
18. A concave lens of focal length 25 cm and a convex lens of focal length 20 cm are
placed in contact with each other. What is the power of this combination? Also find
the focal length of the combination.
19. Find the focal length and nature of lens which should be placed in contact with a
lens of focal length 10 cm so that the power of the combination becomes 5 dioptre.
20. A converging lens is placed on a metre scale on 50 cm mark and an object is placed
on 10 cm mark so that its image is formed on a screen placed on 90 cm mark.
(i) Find the focal length of the lens.
(i) Where should screen be shifted if object is shifted from 10 cm mark to 20 cm mark?
(ii) Where should screen be shifted if object is shifted from 10 cm mark to 30 cm mark?
(i) Where should screen be further shifted if object is shifted to 40 cm mark?
