STUDY LETTER 1: PLAGIARISM

Study unit 1: Policies and terminology (Self-study)

This syllabus theme’s aim is to inculcate the importance of the plagiarism policy and some terminology
that will be used in assessments.

Learning objectives
After studying this section you should be able to:
1. explain what plagiarism entails;
2. identify and rectify instances where plagiarism has occurred;
3. apply the abovementioned principles to the written VBB semester test and assignments to avoid
plagiarism;
4. define and differentiate between the verbs identify, summarise, describe, discuss, explain,
compare, differentiate, assess, evaluate, analyse and to analyse/evaluate/assess or discuss
something critically.
