This Technical Service Manual contains the service and repair procedures
for Fellowes office shredders, Models C-320, C-320C, C-380, and C-380C.
The manual provides maintenance procedures, a list of required tools, and a
troubleshooting guide with flowcharts. In addition, the manual contains a wiring
diagram and an illustrated parts list for each shredder.
From the service and repair perspective, all four models are similar,
except for the cutting assemblies. The C-320 and C-380 are strip-cut
shredders. The C-320C, and C-380C are confetti-cut shredders. The
C-320 and C-320C shredders work with standard letter and A size paper.
The C-380 and C-380C shredders can handle a maximum paper width of
15 inches (38.0 cm). All four shredders are sheet-fed.
Safety
When servicing a shredder, observe the following safety precautions:
Never put a hand, fingers, or foreign objects into the paper entry
slot or throat.
Always turn off and unplug the power cord at the wall outlet
before doing any work on a shredder.
Wall Mounting
Each shredder includes a wall mounting kit (PN 31742). This kit is
used to secure the shredder to a wall to comply with UL 60950 stability
requirements. The wall mounting kit contains a spacer that allows the
shredder to be mounted slightly away from the wall for proper ventilation.
External Cleaning
Clean the exterior of the shredder with a soft cloth. Moisten the cloth with a
mild solution of detergent (such as dish-washing liquid) and warm water. Use
detergent sparingly to avoid contact with electrical parts.
Internal Cleaning
The shredder does not require periodic internal cleaning. However, when the
shredder is being serviced perform these maintenance tasks:
Remove any paper strips or pieces that may have collected around
the cutting assembly.
If lubricated parts are dusty, wipe away the dust with a soft cloth.
Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosol sprays to clean the interior
of the shredder.
Inspection
When the shredder is being serviced, visually inspect it for defects such as
loose screws, loose terminals and connectors, and any other problems you
notice.
Correct any defects and test the shredder before returning it to the customer.
2 Lift the paper entry flap and apply oil over the full width of the cutting
cylinders through the paper entry slot.
3 Press and hold the Manual Forward button for at least 3 seconds.
Operation/Control Panel
The control panel is located on the shredder cover. The panel contains switches and
buttons, indicator LEDs, and a Ready light.
O Off Turns off the auto start sensor and the green Ready light.
R Reverse Runs the shredder in reverse mode. Press and hold to activate.
Indicator LEDs
Ready Light (Green) Shredder is in auto start mode.
Basket Full (Red) Waste basket is full or paper has collected under the cutting
cylinders.

Mechanical problems
CAUTION!
Never attempt to force jammed material through the shredder.
If the paper jam light is on, follow these steps until the light turns off:
2 Check the wastebasket and empty if full. Replace the basket and
make sure the door ajar switch is fully engaged.
3 Plug in the shredder. Press and hold the reverse (R) switch to back
paper out of the paper entry slot. Try pulling gently on the paper to
remove it from the shredder.
CAUTION!
The shredder may be damaged if you alternate too rapidly
between forward and reverse.
2 Check the wastebasket and empty if full. Replace the basket and make
sure the paper full switch is engaged fully.
b Press and hold the Reverse (R) switch in for a few seconds.
5 Feed the maximum cutting capacity (e.g., 14-16 sheets of 20 of paper for
the C-320C shredder), at one time if needed to clear the birdnest.
Electrical Problems
The most common electrical problems result from an opened door, loose wires, a
defective PC board, LED PC board, control panel, and/or bin full sensors.
Verify the On/Off disconnect switch (located on the back of the shredder) is in the On
(I) position.
Check the basket to make sure it is not overfilled and is properly positioned in the
cabinet. Press the Automatic (I) switch, then press the Manual Forward button to
start the shredding operation.
Check the bin full sensors by first verifying they are clean (no paper dust). If the
bin full sensors are clean, the waste basket is not full, and the bin full LED remains
illuminated, the fault will lie with either the bin full sensors or the main PC board.
If the PC board is defective, the shredder may not run at all. Other indicators that the
PC board is defective might be if the shredder runs in reverse but not forward, the
LED lights do not turn off, the shredder runs on, or the bin full lights signal when the
bin is empty.
1 Plug the shredder into the power source. If the shredder has a
disconnect switch, flip it to the ON position.
5 Locate the pins where the control panel (keypad) is plugged in, and
number the pins 1 through 9 with 1 on the left (motor) side.
1 Plug the shredder into the power source. If the shredder has a
disconnect switch, flip it to the ON position.
Test for a faulty main PC board and/or LED PC board. If both are functional and
the problem persists, then the control panel PC board is faulty.
If these simple solutions do not solve the problem, use the troubleshooting
flowcharts to help identify and solve the problem.
The flowcharts are designed to provide you with a starting point for
identifying, isolating, and repairing problems.

The following tools and supplies are required to properly service the Fellowes
shredders, Models C-320, C-320C, C-380, and C-380C.
The Automatic, Off, and Reverse switches; the Manual Forward button; and the
indicator LEDs, and Ready light are located on the housing cover. Paper is fed
through the paper entry slot (throat) on the cover. CDs, DVDs, and credit cards
are fed through the CD entry slot.

The basket full sensor is an electric eye that monitors the paper level in the
basket. The sensor consists of a transmitter and receiver LEDs. On the C‑320
and C-380, the LEDs fit in special 2-piece brackets that are attached to the
left and right sides of the underside of the cabinet shelf. On the C-320C and
C-380C, the LEDs fit into a bracket that is inserted into an opening on the
cabinet shelf. The wires from the sensor connect to the PC board. The sensor
connects to the Basket Full indicator LEDs through the PC board. (See the
wiring diagram.)

Two screws hold the switch to a support on the cabinet shelf. Three wires
are hard-wired to PC board and to the switch. The entire PC board must be
replaced if this switch is defective (see the wiring diagrams).

Replace Operator Panel Switches
The operator panel switches (Reverse, Off, Automatic, and Manual Forward)
are located in the housing cover insert and connect via a cable to the
operator panel PC board. If the cable or a switch is defective, replace the
housing cover insert.
1 Remove the 8 screws that hold the cover insert to the cover.
3 Put the new insert in place and secure it to the housing cover.
Note: Based on Table 1, the paper jam should occur after shredding 1/2 to
3/4 of the minimum jam quantity.
3 When the current limit adjustment screw is set properly, place a drop
of Loctite thread locking liquid on the screw to secure the setting.
a Make sure the Ready Light (green) shines brightly when the
power is on. This indicates the correct LED alignment between
the PC board and the cover.
b Open the cabinet door to make sure the Door Ajar light is
working.
c Open the cabinet door and cover the bin full sensors with a
piece of masking or non-clear tape. Close the door, turn on
the shredder, and wait about 8 seconds for the bin full sensor
to turn on. When the bin full sensor light turns on, remove the
tape from the sensors.
Remove/Replace When inserting the new auto start sensors make sure the transmitter and
the Operator Panel receiver are in the same position. Then make sure the LEDs are properly
PC Board aligned so that they will activate the shredder when paper is put in the paper
feed slot.
2 Place a support bracket over each LED and tighten the screw to
secure the bracket.
3 Secure the sensor wires in the wire guides located along the paper
entry slot.
