Carbon builds up in the oil cooling gallery of the piston. This carbon is also visible under the piston. It reduces the
efficiency of the piston cooling oil. The reason for the carbon build-up could be a specific driving cycle but mainly
caused by too long oil change intervals.
Action
Replace all six cylinder kits if there is a crack / hole in one piston.
A new piston has been introduced in the cylinder liner kits for the aftermarket. It is possible not to replace all six
cylinders if the engine is being repaired for other reasons. The production parts are mixable with the aftermarket parts
in the same engine.
Note: It is only the above mentioned variants that have a different piston for the aftermarket.
Additional information: D13K4 (Step C / OBDEP-C) 420 and 460 & D13K5 (Step D / OBDEP-D) 420, 460 and 500 have
a different compression ratio and use a different piston that is the same for both production and aftermarket.
