Model answer Task 1

The bar chart gives information about how much money was spent on toys
in the years 2012 and 2016 in several different countries. Overall, it can
be seen that in general more money was spent on toys in 2016 than in
2012 in most countries.
The countries that spent the most money on toys by far in 2012 were the
USA and the UK. Consumers in the USA spent $3billion in 2012, whilst
people in the UK spent $6billion in the same year. In contrast, Japanese
and Chinese people spent just $1billion on toys in 2012, while Brazil and
India spent even less than this at $0.5billion and $0.1billion respectively.
By 2016, spending on toys had increased in almost all of the countries.
The UK was still the highest spender at $8billion dollars, while the USA
climbed slightly to $3.5billion. Japan saw no rise and Brazil climbed by
only $0.5billion. On the other hand, China doubled its spend to $2billion
and India’s expenditure rose to the same figure.

Model answer Task 2

In many countries, a growing social problem is being faced by society.

Young people are displaying behaviour that is disrespectful or even
aggressive. This bad behaviour often occurs in public and threatens
public safety and well-being. This essay will propose some reasons for the
problematic behaviour of our youth, and go on to suggest some solutions.
There are several causes of misbehaviour in young people, the first being
that some parents allow their children to have too much freedom. When I
was a child, I had to help my father in his business after school, and then
do my homework. I wasn’t allowed to roam the streets with my friends,
causing trouble. Another related problem is that because of the busy pace of
their lives, parents do not spend enough time talking to their children, and
without the guidance of their parents, young people can lose their way. The
final problem is that young people spend too much time nowadays on their
electronic devices and not enough time taking part in sporting activities
or clubs.
There are some solutions to these problems. Firstly, parents should be strict
with their children and not try to be their friends. They should assign
children chores and make sure that these are completed. Secondly, parents
should make time in their busy schedules to talk to their children about
their day. Finally, parents should monitor their children’s use of electronic
devices and encourage them to take part in extra-curricular activities.
To sum up, we will face more problems related to the behaviour of young
people unless action is taken. Solving this problem starts at home. If
parents follow the advice given, it is likely that the behaviour of their
children will improve and this will have benefits for society as a whole.

Model answer Task 1

Dear Sir or Madam,

You recently called for nominations for the Local Business of the Year in
Springfield. I am writing to nominate my favourite business, Tame Hair.
Tame Hair is a hairdressing salon located in Smith Street, Springfield, quite close
to our home. The salon is owned and operated by Melissa Johnson.
My wife was the first person in our family to visit Melissa’s salon. She was so
impressed that she decided to bring the rest of the family the next time. Now my
wife, my two young daughters, and I all have our hair cut at Tame Hair.
We are all very happy with the way that Melissa cuts our hair, and we also think
that her prices are very reasonable. Another thing that we like about the salon is
that there is a small playroom with toys for children to play with, so the whole
family can visit the salon easily and enjoyably.
For these reasons, I would like to nominate Tame Hair as the Local Springfield
Business of the Year.
Yours faithfully,
John Lee

These days magazines are often filled with articles about the latest way
in which to get fit and lose weight. But which is more important in order to
lead a healthy life – doing regular exercise or eating a balanced diet? This
essay will look at each of them and conclude that both are important in
order to maintain a healthy body.
First of all, regular exercise is key to a healthy body. Experts recommend
that we move our bodies throughout the day. This doesn’t have to be
vigorous exercise; it could be walking briskly to the bus stop or walking up
a flight of stairs. Running, swimming and cycling are also excellent for
building all-round fitness and are not expensive to do. Besides off-setting
the negative impact of a sedentary lifestyle, exercise can relieve stress,
contributing to a healthy mind.
But is just exercising enough? Diet also plays an important role in helping
us lead healthy lives. Although there are many fashionable diets around,
eating a variety of foods such as fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy products,
meat and fish is all that we need to do to help our bodies to function well.
This will provide the body with the nutrients and the energy it requires to
function well.
In conclusion, I would argue that both regular exercise and a balanced diet
are essential to leading a healthy life. Exercise alone is not enough to help
us to stay healthy if we have a very poor diet. Unfortunately, many people
are becoming obese, so it is important that we try to incorporate exercise
and healthy food into our daily lives.
