SMK DONG

Good morning to the audience and the judges. My name is Putri Farisya Alyaa and I am here to talk
about how to be safe during the haze period and ways on how to prevent the air pollutants from
getting worst.

As you probably know, haze is caused by smoke, dust, moisture and particles suspended in the air.
The more particles the are in the air, the less visibility we would have.

To know how much particles there are in there, you have to refer to the 'Air Pollutant Index or API'.
The API reading will tell us how safe, or unsafe it is to be outdoors.

In Malaysia, if the API reading is 51-100, it means the air is moderate. At 101-200, the air is
considered unhealthy. Schools are to reduce outdoor activities and high risk groups such as the
elderly, children and those with respiratory problems are advised to stay indoors. At 201-300, the air
is considered very unhealthy. Schools are to stop all outdoor activities. If the reading is above 301,
the air is considered hazardous and schools are to close.

There are a number of symptoms to show you have been affected by the haze. These include watery
or irritated eyes, conjunctivitis, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, sore throat, headache and dizziness.
Rest assured that most of these symptoms are short-term and mild. They will get better if you stay
indoors and do not expose yourself to the haze.

To stay healthy during the haze, there are several precautions that you can take. Firstly, try to stay
indoors as often as you can. Close all windows, doors or any opening to prevent haze from entering
your home or classroom. You can also use an air purifier to improve the quality air indoor. Secondly,
cut down on games and sports, or any other outdoor activities. The less you are exposed to the haze,
the better. Thirdly, try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and eat more fruit, and vegetables.
This will help to flush out toxins and improve your immune systems. Fourthly, wear a face mask when
you are outdoors to help yourself from inhaling the bad particles. Finally, if you have any respiratory
diseases, be extra cautious. Asthmatics or people with chronic bronchitis, carry your medication
everywhere you go.

Next, we are going to talk about on how to prevent the air pollutants from getting worst. To begin
with, the level of air pollution has reached a critical point. We can say that the air we breathe is
getting more and more polluted each and everyday. But, there are still ways by which we can reduce
the number of air pollutants from the air.

Firstly, the quality of air can be improved by planting more and more trees as they clean and filter
the air. Secondly, strict policy for industries related to the filter of gases should be introduced in the
countries. So, we can minimize the toxins released from factories. Thirdly, we have to adopt the
usage of Eco-friendly fuels such as LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), CNG (Compressed Natural Gas),
bio-gas, and other eco-friendly fuels. So, we can reduce the amount of harmful toxic gases.

To sum it up, the biggest contribution to the increase in air pollution is of fossil fuels which produce
nitric and sulphuric oxides. But, humans have taken this problem seriously and are devotedly
working to eradicate the problem that they have created. Above all, many initiatives like plant trees,
use of eco-friendly fuel are promoted worldwide.
In conclusion, remember to read and update yourself on the situation so that you informed.
Remember, you are responsible for your own health and we are responsible for whatever bad things
we had caused to this world.

Thank you for listening and please stay safe.
