Assassin's Creed™ Hooded Scarf

Designed by Emily Catherine of Sweetheart’s Crochet

Pattern and Pictures, © 2012

I made this for my brother, who is

obsessed with Assassin’s Creed. He
asked for a hooded scarf similar to the
one worn by the character in the game.
If you really want to be authentic,
make the hood all white. My brother
wanted his in black with the top-piece
in grey.

Materials:
Approximately 800 yards worsted weight yarn (I
used Caron Simply Soft, in Black and Heather Grey)
Size I crochet hook
Tapestry needle
Pins

Gauge:
12 rows and 11 stitches in hdc equals a 4 inch square. Tip: Make your square larger than
4 inches, since the pull and drape of larger fabric often affect gauge. Try a 6 inch or even
an 8 inch square to get true results. You may also want to lauder your square the way
you plan to lauder the garment in the future, since the fabric may shrink when washed.

Scarf:
Ch 238.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. 237 sc.
Rows 2-19: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in first sc and in each sc across. 237 hdc.
Row 20: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first hdc and in each hdc across. 237 sc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hood:
Ch 116.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. 115 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc and in remaining 2 sc. 115 total sc.
Row 3: Rep Row 2.
Row 4: Ch 2, turn. In back loops only, hdc in first sc and in each sc across. 115 hdc.
This is now the right side (rs) of the hood, the part that will face up when the hood is
attached.
Row 5: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in first hdc and in each hdc across. 115 hdc.
Rows 6-26: Rep row 5. Finish off.

To attach the hood to the scarf, count in 99 stitches from one end of the scarf. Position
the hood so that it is perpendicular to the scarf, with the bottom left corner of the short
side (the three rows of sc) of the hood facing left and touching the 99th stitch near the
center of the scarf. Thread your plastic tapestry needle with yarn matching the hood and
scarf and whipstitch the two pieces together. Each stitch along the top of the scarf should
correspond to the side edge of a row of the hood—first the three sc rows, and then the
hdc rows for the next 23 stitches. Do not finish off yarn—keep your needle
threaded.

Next, untangle the hood if necessary and bring the other short side down so that it meets
the attached part of the hood and the scarf. It should not be twisted—this is the
part that will be at the back of your neck, and the length of the hood will be over your
head, so the three sc rows on this part of the hood should be to your right, with the hdc
rows in the center, touching the hdc rows on the part of the hood
you’ve already attached. Continue whipstitching across so that both short ends of
the hood are attached to the center of the scarf.

Because I made this scarf for my brother, who is a rough-and-tumble teenage boy, I
whipstitched back over the seam a second time, just to make sure it would stay attached
through repeated wearings and washings. You may want to do the same. There should
be 98 stitches on the scarf on either side of the hood.

When you are finished, with the same side still facing you (this is the wrong side, or ws,
that will be touching your head, rather than facing out),
whipstitch up the back of the hood, closing the seam so
that the hood is now all one piece.

When you get near the top of the seam, be aware that if
you simply whipstitch all the way up, you will be left
with a small “ducktail” or cow-lick type effect when you
put the hood on. If it does not bother you to have a small
point at the top of the hood, simply whipstitch all the way
up. Again, because I made this scarf for my brother, who is not only rough-and-tumble
but concerned about his appearance, as teenagers are, when I got about 5 stitches from
the top of the hood, I tucked the corners in and sewed about 3 stitches in the fabric, rather
than along the edge, making it a bit more rounded rather than a corner.

You can stop here and have a perfectly fine hooded scarf, suited for any wintry occasion.
To continue on and create the Assassin’s Creed™ top and peak, keep
going with the pattern.

Hood Topper:
You can continue with the hood topper in the same color (in the game it is all white) or
use a contrasting color. I used grey.

Ch 24.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. 23 sc.

Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each ch across. 23 sc.
Row 4: Ch 2, turn. In back loops only, hdc in first sc and in each sc across. 23 hdc.
Row 5: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in first hdc and in each hdc across. 23 hdc.
Rows 6-28: Rep Row 5. Finish off yarn.

Turn the topper around so that the original ch row (on the short end) is facing you, with
the seam created by the back loop only row is facing up. Attach yarn with a sl st in the
sixth ch from the left end of the piece (the left end as it faces you).

Peak of Hood Topper:

Row 1: Hdc in joining st and in in next 13 sts. 14 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in first st. (Hdc 2 sts together) 6 times. Hdc in last st. 8 hdc.
Row 3: Ch 2, turn. (Hdc 2 sts together) across. 4 hdc.
Row 4: Ch 2, turn. (Hdc 2 sts together) across. 2 hdc.
Row 5: Ch 2, turn. Hdc 2 sts together. 1 hdc. Finish off yarn.

With same yarn, Ch 16.

Row 1: Hdc in second ch from hk. Hdc across. 14 hdc.
Rows 2-5: Rep rows for peak above.

You now have the hood topper and an extra peak. Take the hood topper and turn in over
so that the wrong side is facing you (seam created by bk lp only row is facing
down). Place the extra peak over the bottom of the peak that is on the hood topper, and
using your hook and the same color yarn, sc the edges of both together so that they are
one peak of double thickness. This is done to weight the peak so that it does not curl up.
When you are finished doing a sc round all the way around the outside edges of the peak,
finish off your yarn, being sure to leave a long length (about 18 inches). Thread this
length through your tapestry needle and use it to whipstitch the pocket between the two
peaks closed. Finish off.

Place the topper so that it is centered on the top of the hood—if you count along the edge
of the hood, there should be 46 stitches on each side, so that the topper is on the middle
23 stitches. The peak should be hanging off the center of the front, so that the edge
of the sc rows are flat against the edge of the hood. The topper should
extend back past the crown of the head. It is important to pin the topper in
place so that it stays put while you are attaching it—otherwise it may end
up crooked, and whipstitching is a pain to unravel so that you can fix your errors.
Prevent them now by pinning.

If you have used two different colors for the hood and the topper, I would suggest using
the color that matches the topper to stitch it in place. The stitches will blend into the
topper, and you can hide the bottom ones under the edge of the topper so that they are not

noticeable. You’ll be able to see them on the inside of the hood, but since that won’t be
visible to people who are looking at you, that won’t matter. Weave in all your ends.

You are now ready to don your

hood, hide in crowds, scale walls,
and jump into enormous piles of
hay. Have fun!
