This patterns instructions will teach you how to make this cute hat... by the time you are done,
you will have a hat just like the one shown in the pictures above. You will learn to make the
beanie, red bandanna with white polka dots, eye patch, ear flaps, and braided tassels. Ear flaps
and tassels can be left off if you choose to make the hat as a beanie.
Skill Level: Easy - you need to have basic knowledge of crochet stitches.
Materials:
This sample hat was made using the following materials:

Size Chart
The following chart will guide you to obtain the correct average size based on head
circumference.
Teen/Adult
Small 21”-22”
Medium 22.5”-23.5”
Large 24”
This pattern is written using US American terminology. Please refer to the conversion chart
below to make changes to UK British.
These are equivalent crochet terms and abbreviations. Only the names differ, the stitches
themselves are identical.

Yarn Weight and Crochet Hook Chart
This chart is to help you and let you know more about the type of yarns you can find at your
local store and what the little symbol of the yarn with the number means.

Important notes before we start, please read…
This pattern is very simple, but I recommend that you read the basic instructions before you start.
The pictures will guide and you will be able to check your work as you go.
Slip stitch and fasten off: When working with my patterns you will notice that I will say “sl st
to finish and fasten off” It’s very important to secure and hide away these tails so that your piece
really has that finished look and there's no risk of unraveling or fraying. So every time these
instructions ask you to “fasten off” you will do the following:
1.- Cut the yarn about 5-6 inches from the hook.
2.- Using your hook, draw the cut end of the yarn through the last remaining loop on your hook.
3.- Pull gently on the tail of yarn to snug up the end.
4.- Thread the remaining yarn tail onto a tapestry needle.
5.- Weave the 5-6 inch tail of yarn up and down through 3 or 4 stitches, like in a zigzag pattern.
6.- Go back the way you came, weaving the end backwards through those same few stitches.
7.- Cut the yarn about 1/4 inch from your project and gently pull... the end will disappear, and
your work is secure.
Sc decrease at beginning of row: when working the earflaps we will be making a small crochet
decrease. This is how:
1.- Insert hook into first stitch & draw up a loop (2 loops on hook).
2.- Insert hook into next stitch & draw up a loop (3 loops on hook).
3.- YO & draw through all 3 loops on hook.
After working the sc decrease you will continue working in every st normally.
5
Switch Hooks When Necessary
Sometimes crocheters tend to work either too tightly or too loosely.
Crochet a gauge swatch: to keep stitches consistent and the size of your design on track.
We as crocheters tend to crochet tighter at the beginning and end of rows than in the body of our
work. The gauge for this pattern calls for 8 hdc stitches = 2 inches and 4 hdc rows = 2 inches,
make your swatch at least 4 inches squared. That way, you can measure in the center of the
swatch and get an accurate measurement of your normal pace.
Rounds: This hat is made crocheting in rounds, each round will begin with a number of chains
that will be counted some times as the first stitch, and is ended by joining the last stitch with the
top of the beginning st creating concentric circles – slip stitch.
The photo tutorial shows how to make the 12-24 months size. If you are making a size other
than 12-24 months you can still follow the same instructions… the variations are explained at the
end of this pattern base on every size.

EDGE
Once you are done with your second earflap, you will continue by working 2 sc in the first stitch.
Sc in each st around the edge. When you get to the top of the next earflap, work 4 sc in the last st
of the earflap. We do this so that the corners of the earflap look round and able to handle the
braids later on. Finish by working 2 sc in the last st, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off and secure
ends.
12
At this point you will have your basic earflaps hat done. As you can see you can just leave the
hat like this and maybe add the braids and have a nice earflap hat.
To make the other sizes, just refer to the instructions at the end of this pattern.
13
The next set of instructions will show you how to make the eyes, beak, ears, wings, eye patch,
the knot for the corner of the bandanna, and braids. Some of these items instructions will vary
accordingly to the size, so make sure to read carefully.

Dots
This is optional. You can add these dots to make the bandanna more colorful, but you can also
leave it without the dots and it will look like the bottom hat in the picture – first page.
Round 1: Ch 2, work 5 sc in second ch from hook. Sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off leaving a
small tail of yarn to sew the dots to the hat. Make as many you will like to add. (18-24 pcs)
Braids
If you want to combine 3 colors, you will need to cut 8 pieces - 42” long – per color = 24
Divide into 2 groups of 12 (4 of each color).
Eye Patch
Let’s start by making a loop in your hook using your black yarn.
Row 1: Ch 6, sc in second ch from hook and in the following 4 chain. Turn. (5 sc)
Row 2: Work 7 tr in 3rd sc. Skipt next sc and sl st on last sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around - work 2 sc in the corners, shaping the eye patch. Sl st on first
sc to join.
20
When making the eye patch for the bigger sizes, you can increase the size by repeating row 3.
21
ASSEMBLING
Now that we have all our pieces, we will start assembling the hat as followed:
3. Place the wings in the sides as shown in the pictures. They should go above the white
line and center in position to the earflap.
22
4. Sew in the buttons for the eyes.
5. Take the red piece that you made and tie a knot in the center. Sew it to the corner belog
the edge of the bandanna – red part of the hat.
6. Braids: Fold one bunch of 12 in half and push the folded end through the bottom space
of the earflap.
Pull the two ends, each of 12 strands, through the folded loop and pull up neatly, keeping
the two ends the same length.
Braid these 24 strands gently and tie an overhand knot near the end to stop the braid from
unraveling. Repeat for second earflap.
7. Finish the eye patch by working a chain long enough to go around the hat and finally
work a sl st in the corner of the patch. Fasten off, weave and secure ends.
8. You can add a little detail to the ears by cutting 2 pieces – 10” long of each yarn colors.
In this case you will end up with 12 pieces/6 colors. Divide them in two groups.
Fold one bunch of 6 in half and push the folded end through the bottom space of the ears.
Pull the two ends, each of 6 strands, through the folded loop and pull up neatly, keeping
the two ends the same length.
23
9. Finally sew in the white dots to the red top part of the hat. This is optional and you can
see how the hats look with or without dots in the picture on first page.
The following set of instructions will guide to make the hat, you will need to visit the first pages
of this patterns for instructions regarding the ears, wings, eyes, beak, eye patch, bandanna knot
and braids.
You can also modify this earflap into a beanie by skipping the earflaps and actually working 2
rounds of sc around the edge. You can make it long enough to cover below the ears or even
longer to be folded.

Blocking your crochet projects:
The process of blocking involves shaping and sometimes pinning the crocheted piece into the
correct shape before completing an item.
For blocking items made with acrylic and other synthetic yarns, use a spray bottle with clean
water and mist over the item until it is moist, but not saturated. Pat the item so it is thoroughly
damp. Allow the item to dry completely.
For blocking yarns with wool in it, cotton or linen yarns, shape the item. Then take a damp, clean
cloth and lay it over the crocheted item. Take a steam iron set to the correct temperature for the
yarn, hold the iron about an inch over the item and move the iron above the item until the cloth is
warm.
Do NOT IRON the crocheted item. Remove the cloth AND if the yarn is damp and warm, it is
ready. Remove the cloth and allow the item to dry completely.
Care Instructions:
Hand wash in cool water. Use a mild detergent and allow the hat to soak for twenty minutes,
agitate gently - never squeeze or wring. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry flat. If the hat is
misshapen, reshape as it lies flat and allow to dry.
