advocating for hand hygiene as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

About the 2023 Global Handwashing Day Theme

The 2023 Global Handwashing Day theme is “Clean hands are within reach.”

Recent years have seen a rise in hand hygiene commitment and action. While great strides have been
made, we must triple our current efforts to achieve global hand hygiene targets. Through strong
leadership and collective efforts, we can close gaps in access and practice to achieve hand hygiene for all.
Everyone has a role to play to ensure clean hands are within reach.

We’re excited to celebrate Global Handwashing Day this year! This year’s tagline is “Clean hands are
within reach,” highlighting both our strides forward and the remaining challenges to reach hand hygiene

Global Handwashing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to raising awareness on the
importance of handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and
save lives. Celebrated every October 15, the Day serves as a platform for commitment and action and
reaches billions of people with hand hygiene messages each year. The theme for 2023 Global
Handwashing Day is “Clean hands are within reach.” Through strong leadership and collective efforts, we
can close gaps in access and practice to achieve hand hygiene for all. Everyone has a role to play to
ensure clean hands are within reach.

About the ‘Creating Clean Hands’ Contest

As part of the Global Handwashing Day 2023 campaign, the Global Handwashing Partnership is hosting a
creative contest that aims to encourage youth (18 years or under) to express their ideas and creativity
through a short music video promoting clean hands. The ‘Creating Clean Hands’ Contest invites
participants to showcase their talent and passion while amplifying Global Handwashing Day’s core
messages. Contest guidelines are available on the ‘contest’ page of the Global Handwashing Day website.
