As you guys saw in the movie, past continuous


is used for three different situations:

1 Story background.
It was starting to get dark.

2 Actions in progress in the past.


I was walking my dog.

3 A long action interrupted by a


shorter one, in the past.
I was calling Max’s name when
I heard a crash.


These two describe things that
are happening at a speci c
moment in the past, without
interruption.

So, now that we have reviewed past continuous for actions


interrupted in the past, I want you to go to your ANSWER
SHEETS and complete the activities.

For Activity 1 you have to choose the correct form of the verb
(past continuous/simple past). Remember that the interrupted
action is written in past continuous and the interrupting action in
simple past.

Activity 2 has you lling in the blank spaces with the correct
form of the verb in brackets. You can look at the activity in our
CLASS BOOK page 35.

Finally, for Activity 3 you have to look at the picture above and
write some sentences about it using past continuous and simple
past. You can look at the activity in our CLASS BOOK page 35.

We describe two actions using past continuous
(because both of them a e actions that have NOT finished in the past!)
and they are joined by the word “while”.

when we use while, the verb tense that

Now that we know how to use past continuous in two di erent ways you
can go to your ANSWER SHEETS and complete the activities.

For Activity 1 you have to choose the correct form of the verb
in brackets (past continuous/simple past). Be careful, some
are interrupted actions and others are actions that are
happening at the same time. Look for “while” and “when” to
know the di erence.

In Activity 2 you have to write a sentence using the correct


form for each verb. In brackets it shows which keyword you
have to use. This word will tell you which verb tense you will
have to use for each verb.

Finally, for Activity 3 you have to ll in the blanks with the verb
in brackets in the correct verb tense. Read carefully to see
which one goes in simple past and which one goes in past
continuous.
