PERFORMANCE TASK 1
PHYSICS GARDE 8- QUARTER 1

Name: ______________________ Grade and Section:___________

Learning Competency:
⮚ Investigate the relationship between the amount of force applied and the mass of the object to
the amount of change in the object’s motion.

Learning Objectives: After performing the task, the learners are expected to;
⮚ Describe how the force applied to an object of mass affects its acceleration.
⮚ Differentiate the relationship of mass of the object to the amount of change the object’s motion
after being applied by force.

Instruction: Two balls are moving in different kinds of motion as shown. Answer the questions that
follow.

1. A ball is dropped as shown in Picture A on the right.

a. Is the ball moving in accelerated motion or in constant velocity? Why do

you say so?

b. What is the cause behind the motion of the ball?

c. Which Law of Motion describes the motion of the ball?

2. A ball is whirled horizontally in a circular motion as shown in Picture B

on the right. Suddenly the string attached to the ball snapped.a.
Before the string snapped, was the ball moving in accelerated
motion or constant velocity? Why do you say so?

b. What is the cause behind the motion of the ball?

c. Which Law of Motion describes the motion of the ball before

and after the string snapped?

d. After the string snapped, what do you think would happen to

the motion of the ball? What law of Motion would describe
the motion of the ball this time? Expound your answer.

Expected Answers to Motion Analysis

1. A ball is dropped as shown in Picture A on the right.

a. Is the ball moving in accelerated motion or in constant velocity? Why do you say so?

⮚ The ball that is dropped is moving in accelerated motion. Its positions at equal time
intervals increase, which implies that it is moving faster.
b. What is the cause behind the motion of the ball?

⮚ Being an accelerated motion, this suggests that the ball is under the influence of an
external net force. It is possible that the external net force causing the ball to fall is
gravity. (Note: At this point, gravitational force is not yet discussed. Hence, a guess
on the nature of the external net force is applicable.)
c. Which Law of Motion describes the motion of the ball?

⮚ Since there is an external force acting on the ball, then its motion is described by
the Law of Acceleration.

2. Suddenly the string attached to the ball snapped.

a. Before the string snapped, was the ball moving in accelerated motion or constant
velocity? Why do you say so?

⮚ Before the string snapped, the ball was moving in accelerated motion because it
was constantly changing direction.
b. What is the cause behind the motion of the ball?

⮚ Because the ball is moving in accelerated motion, it is under the influence of an

external force, which is along the string attached to the ball. (Note: At this point,
circular motion is not yet formally discussed. Hence, a guess on the nature of the
external net force is acceptable.)
c. Which Law of Motion describes the motion of the ball before and after the string
snapped?

⮚ Since there is an external net force acting on the ball, then its motion is described
by the Law of Acceleration.
d. After the string snapped, what do you think would happen to the motion of the ball? What
law of Motion would describe the motion of the ball this time? Expound your answer.

⮚ After the string snapped, the external net force that is on the string would
disappear. This would imply that the ball would move according to the Law of
Inertia. Hence, it would probably move in a straight line.

⮚ Note: At this point, circular motion is not yet formally discussed. Hence, it is not
expected that the students would be able to completely answer the direction of
motion of the ball. “Straight line” is acceptable for now. For the teacher’s reference,
the ball would move in a straight-line tangent to the circular path. This concept will
be fully discussed later.

⮚ It would also be high time to point out that a simple way to check whether the object
is accelerating or not is to look at its path. An object moving in a curved path is
moving under the influence of an external net force even if its positions are
equidistant from each other; hence, it is accelerating. If the object has a straight-line
path, a further check on the positions would verify if the object is accelerating.
