MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION: DESCRIBING

AND MEASURING MOTION
LEARNING OBJECTIVE

01
DESCRIBE THE MOTION OF AN OBJECT IN TERMS OF
DISTANCE, DISPLACEMENT, SPEED OR VELOCITY AND
ACCELERATION.

02
DISTINGUISH THE DIFFERENT MOTION GRAPHS
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
How will understanding of speed, velocity,
acceleration important in understanding
everyday occurrences?
MOTION GRAPHS
WORD BANK

Motion is a change in position measured by distance and

time.

Speed tells us the rate at which an object moves.

Velocity tells the speed and direction of a moving object.

Acceleration tells us the rate speed or direction changes.

MOTION GRAPHS

What are motion graphs?

Motion Graphs
A graph is a visual
representation that uses lines to
show how two or more sets of
measurements are related to
each other.
DISTANCE-TIME GRAPHS (DISPLACEMENT-TIME GRAPH)

Time is always plotted on the X-axis

(bottom of the graph). The further to the
right on the axis, the longer the time from
the start.

Distance is plotted on the Y-axis (side of the

graph). The higher up the graph, the further
from the start.

If an object is not moving, a horizontal line is
shown on a distance-time graph.

Time is increasing to the right, but its distance

does not change. It is not moving. We say it is
At Rest.

If an object is moving at a constant speed, it
means it has the same increase in distance in a
given time:

Time is increasing to the right, and distance is

increasing constantly with time. The object
moves at a constant speed.

*Constant speed is shown by straight lines

on a graph.
A steeper line indicates a larger distance
moved in a given time. In other words,
higher speed.

Both lines are straight, so both speeds are

constant.
The line on this graph is curving
upwards. This shows an increase in
speed, since the line is getting steeper.

In other words, in a given time, the distance

the object moves is change (getting larger). It
is accelerating.
COLLABORATIVE GROUP ACTIVITY

Analyze and interpret graphs

to describe the relative
motion of a body.
Ms. Pittman was walking at a
constant pace to warm up for a
run, but then stopped to tie her
shoe. After tying her shoe she
began running.
What distance/ time graph
represents Ms. Pittman.
COLLABORATIVE GROUP ACTIVITY
Analyze and interpret
graphs to describe the
relative motion of a
body.
Which graph represents a
students standing at their
locker for a period of
time?
COLLABORATIVE GROUP ACTIVITY
Analyze and interpret graphs
to describe the relative motion
of a body.
Ms. Pittman went to the movies.
She drove at a constant speed
the whole way there, and after
the movie was over she drove
back home at the same constant
speed.
What graph is represented by
Ms. Pittman's journey?
COLLABORATIVE GROUP ACTIVITY
Analyze and interpret graphs
to describe the relative motion
of a body.
How many times does this
object STOP moving?
A. None
B. Once
C. Twice
D. Three times
COLLABORATIVE GROUP ACTIVITY

During what segments is the
object returning to the reference
point?
A. A to B
B. B to C
C. C to D
D. D to E
SPEED
SPEED

Speed refers to how far an object moves

Formula: in a given time interval

Speed= distance/ -gives as an idea how fast an object can cover

time a distance in a given amount of time
-Speed is a scalar quantity
Let’s try!

Ian went running at a distance of

Given: 120 m in 30 s. What was Ian’s
Distance:
Time:
average speed?
Average speed: ?

Formula:
Speed= distance/ time
Answer:
VELOCITY
VELOCITY

Velocity: speed with direction

FORMULA:
-It gives us an idea to how fast an
object is moving and to which
Velocity=
direction.
displacement/ time
-Vector quantity
-It refers to the rate of change in
displacement.
Let’s try!

What is the runner’s average

Given:
Displacement: velocity if his position changes
Time: from 15 m east to 40 m east during
Average velocity: ? a three second time interval?
Formula:
velocity= displacement/
time Answer:
ACCELERATION
ACCELERATION

Acceleration: refers to the rate of

FORMULA: change in speed or velocity of an
object.
Acceleration= -It gives us an idea how an quick
change in velocity/ an object speeds up or slows down.
time -when the speed of the object is
changing
Let’s try!
